Book Trading Bright Lights for Lightning Bugs

Download or read book Trading Bright Lights for Lightning Bugs written by Jann Franklin and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Jen Guidry begins the process of choosing a school for her kindergartener, she celebrates all the opportunities that big-city life offers. Unfortunately for Jen, her husband has other ideas. He's ready to ditch the big-city headaches and move back to his hometown with a population of only 298 people. Jen finds herself along with her family (husband Mike, five-year-old Henry, and three-year-old James) trading in the bright lights of Dallas, Texas, for the lightning bugs of Graisseville, Louisiana. All Jen can think about is how far she'll have to drive to find a good cup of coffee. The boys are ecstatic to be surrounded by trees and open spaces where they can just run. Mike is settling into his new role as owner of Big Ed's Parts 'n' More. Jen, however, has to make new friends and deal with all the eccentricities small-town life adds to her plate. As Jen navigates the nuances and backstories everyone else in town takes for granted, she finds new friends and new adventures. She volunteers to coordinate the Live Nativity event at her church, finds a backup beauty queen, and organizes the annual Mardi Gras Parade. Jen finds she is living a life she never realized she was missing. Will she be able to completely give up the bright lights forever and appreciate her yard full of lightning bugs?

Book Big Potential

Download or read book Big Potential written by Shawn Achor and published by Currency. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “With cutting-edge research, penetrating insights, and practical examples, Shawn Achor describes a new conception of ‘success,’ and in doing so, reveals exciting new strategies we can use to meet our highest potential.”—Gretchen Rubin, bestselling author of The Happiness Project “A vibrant book on how to bring out the best in others—and how they can bring out the best in us.”—Adam Grant, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Think Again and host of the podcast WorkLife In a world that thrives on competition and individual achievement, we’re measuring and pursuing potential incorrectly. Pursuing success in isolation—pushing others away as we push ourselves too hard—not only limits our potential but makes us more stressed and disconnected than ever. Harvard-trained researcher Shawn Achor reveals a better approach. With exciting new research combining neuroscience and psychology with Big Data, Achor shows that our potential is not limited by what we alone can achieve. Instead, it is determined by how we complement, contribute to, and benefit from the abilities and achievements of people around us. When we—as individuals, leaders, and parents—chase only individual achievement, we leave vast sources of potential untapped. But once we put “others” back into the equation, and work to make others better, we ignite a Virtuous Cycle of cascading successes that amplify our own. The dramatic shifts in how we approach work today demand an equally dramatic shift in our approach to success. In Big Potential, Achor draws on cutting-edge original research as well as his work with nearly half of the Fortune 100 and with places like NASA, the NFL and the NBA, and offers a new path to thriving in the modern world.

Download or read book Silent Sparks written by Sara Lewis and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-04-26 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An informative, entertaining, and beautifully illustrated look at the beloved firefly For centuries, the beauty of fireflies has evoked wonder and delight. Yet for most of us, fireflies remain shrouded in mystery: How do fireflies make their light? What are they saying with their flashing? And what do fireflies look for in a mate? In Silent Sparks, noted biologist and firefly expert Sara Lewis dives into the fascinating world of fireflies and reveals the most up-to-date discoveries about these beloved insects. From the meadows of New England and the hills of the Great Smoky Mountains, to the rivers of Japan and mangrove forests of Malaysia, this beautifully illustrated and accessible book uncovers the remarkable, dramatic stories of birth, courtship, romance, sex, deceit, poison, and death among fireflies. The nearly two thousand species of fireflies worldwide have evolved in different ways—and while most mate through the aerial language of blinking lights, not all do. Lewis introduces us to fireflies that don't light up at all, relying on wind-borne perfumes to find mates, and we encounter glow-worm fireflies, whose plump, wingless females never fly. We go behind the scenes to meet inquisitive scientists who have dedicated their lives to understanding fireflies, and we learn about various modern threats including light pollution and habitat destruction. In the last section of the book, Lewis provides a field guide for North American fireflies, enabling us to identify them in our own backyards and neighborhoods. This concise, handy guide includes distinguishing features, habits, and range maps for the most commonly encountered fireflies, as well as a gear list. A passionate exploration of one of the world's most charismatic and admired insects, Silent Sparks will inspire us to reconnect with the natural world.
