Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They called themselves Dakota, but the explorers and fur traders who first encountered these people in the sixteenth century referred to them as Sioux, a corruption of the name their enemies called them. That linguistic dissonance foreshadowed a series of bloodier conflicts between Sioux warriors and the American military in the mid-nineteenth century. Doreen Chaky’s narrative history of this contentious time offers the first complete picture of the conflicts on the Upper Missouri in the 1850s and 1860s, the period bookended by the Sioux’s first major military conflicts with the U.S. Army and the creation of the Great Sioux Reservation. Terrible Justice explores not only relations between the Sioux and their opponents but also the discord among Sioux bands themselves. Moving beyond earlier historians’ focus on the Brulé and Oglala bands, Chaky examines how the northern, southern, and Minnesota Sioux bands all became involved in and were affected by the U.S. invasion. In this way Terrible Justice ties Upper Missouri and Minnesota Sioux history to better-known Oglala and Brulé Sioux history.

Book Chiefs Agents Soldiers

Book excerpt: In Navajo history the decades immediately following the release from the Bosque Redondo in 1868 are years of privation. Reunion with their homeland soothed some of the sorrow of their Long Walk, but daily life for the Navajo remained nearly as harsh as at Fort Sumner. In the fourteen years following their incarceration, Navajo leaders struggled constantly to feed their people while abiding by the terms of their release to avoid armed conflict and cease raiding. In this ethnohistory, the chiefs - particularly Barboncito, Ganado Mucho, and Manuelito - emerge as extraordinary leaders who held together a fragile peace by alternately accommodating and challenging often hostile officials while convincing their people to endure hardships born of Washington's disregard for their welfare. When necessary, they even tracked down and punished errant Navajos whose raids threatened the peace. Through the courage and patience of the chiefs, working with the few conscientious agents and soldiers sent to oversee their lives, the Navajo not only survived but learned how to adapt to a dominant society.

Book Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army

Download or read book Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army written by William Gardner Bell and published by U.S. Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreword: The Center Of Military History first published Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army: Portraits & biographical sketches in 1981 during the bicentennial of the American Revolution and the US Constitution. The book reflected two major themes of the Army's commemoration: the role of the soldier-statesmen of the revolution in the creation of our government and the constitutional principle of civilian control of the military. This updated printing continues to recognize those twin legacies. The first Secretaries of War were prominent members of the soldier-statesmen generation, and they and their successors have embodied the Founding Fathers' intent to ensure civilian leadership in military affairs. Secretaries of War and Secretaries of the Army is relevant to students and scholars in such diverse fields as military history, political science, American studies, and art and portraiture. We trust that this new edition will continue to be useful as background for the nomination of Army secretaries, as a handbook for the congressional armed services committees, and as a reference book throughout the Army. It has been a valuable source of information for libraries, and we hope that its distinctive perspective on the history of the Army will interest a new generation of the American public as well.
