It brings together several aspects of peoples resistance to colonialism and imperialism before and after independence and includes resistance by nationalities, women, students, peasants and workers in what can only be described as peoples resistance. While Mau Mau and trade unions were essential in the liberation struggle, on their own they would have faced innumerable difficulties to achieve their goal. Peasants, nationalities, women, children and young people, students, independent churches, independent schools, all played a part in reinforcing the organized and ideology led resistance of Mau Mau and trade unions. Additional material is included to provide thought for reflections. The first two essays deal with the question of nationalities and with the contradictions between capitalism and socialism with the collapse of USSR. They point to the fact that that the struggle in Kenya influences, and is in turn influenced by, developments around the world. The next section is the presentation at the launch of Kenyas War of Independence in Nairobi on February 21, 2018. The final section contains solidarity messages from Shiraz Durrani, Abdilatif Abdalla and Kang'ethe Mungai at the event to commemorate and celebrate the revolutionary work of Karimi Nduthu held on March 24, 2018 at the Professional Centre in Nairobi. Book excerpt: The historiography of Kenyan anti-colonialism has centered primarily on Mau Mau, more accurately known as the Land and Freedom Army, and the debate on its relation to Kenyan independence. However this focus underappreciates the role of the Kenyan working class in achieving national liberation. In the immediate aftermath of World War Two, and before the rise of the Land and Freedom Army, ordinary Kenyan workers, often spontaneously and largely independent of established union or political leaderships, directly confronted the colonial state over issues of wages, racial inequality and political power. The working class thus effectively opened the struggle that led to Kenya's independence from British colonialism. This working class movement was highlighted by the general strikes in Mombasa (1947) and Nairobi (1950), and the organizations they respectively produced, the African Workers Federation and the East African Trade Union Congress. These developments in Kenya were in fact part of a continent-wide upsurge in worker militancy that represented the potential for a radical Pan-African working class leadership in post-colonial Africa. The defeat of these movements in Kenya and across Africa reinforced the moderate, nationalist leaderships that led the successful struggles for political independence but offered no realistic means for Africa to avoid the impasse of neocolonialism.

Capitalism won with the active support of USA and UK governments at the time of independence in 1963. Yet the original (1960) Kenya African National Union (KANU) Party was in favour of socialism. It was Presidents Jomo Kenyatta and Daniel Arap Moi who used violence to suppress those advocating socialism. They used their power to massacre, assassinate, exile, imprison and disappear people and created a state of terror to silence their opponents. Capitalism became the unstated state policy. Thus, imperialism won and the aims of Mau Mau were brutally suppressed. However, the desire for socialism never died. Resistance movements and opposition parties made socialism their aim, reflecting peoples desire for justice, equality and empowerment. Many studies on Kenya focus on personalities or tribes' or race as driver of events, ignoring the all-important class and ideological positions of leaders and their Parties. Two Paths Ahead reproduces and comments on the documents from the opposing sides in the battles between capitalism and socialism the original Kenya African National Union (KANU), its successor, KANU-B, and the Kenya Peoples Union (KPU) on economy, land, labour, and social policy. It also touches upon the demands of the organisers of the 1982 Coup and traces the political stand of key leaders as proponents of capitalism or socialism. The final section reproduces some of the documents on this ideological struggle. The book exposes the hidden hand of imperialism in the countrys rush to capitalism. It fills a gap in understanding the real contradictions that divide Kenya to this day.
