Book Trade Unions and the Betrayal of the Unemployed

Download or read book Trade Unions and the Betrayal of the Unemployed written by Immanuel Ness and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the problematic relationship between unions and the unemployed in New York City during the 1990's. Historically, trade unions in the U.S. have had an interest in the political mobilization of the jobless to expand unemployment insurance and lessen the threat of lower wages, reduced union density, and weaker bargaining positions for unions. Despite these advantages, trade unions have rarely organized the unemployed, because they represent a potential threat to the organizational control, leadership, and legitimacy of the trade unions themselves. Moreover, the interests of the unemployed conflict directly with those of the securely employed trade unionist. The study identifies union responses to unemployment at local and regional levels and the responses of independent activist organizations. The research suggests that hiring hall unions produce exclusive organizing strategies that have deeper accountability to their members, but with organizing objectives that serve only the narrow interests of core members. By contrast, workplace-based unions typically engender class-oriented unions with narrow accountability to members, but with organizing objectives that extend beyond their immediate members.

Book excerpt: “Simply put, the leftist labor unions have the Democrats in their pockets. And we’re all paying the price.” Linda Chavez, President George W. Bush’s original choice for Secretary of Labor and a former union official, is one of the foremost authorities on America’s labor unions. Now, in the explosive new book Betrayal, she and fellow union expert Daniel Gray expose the corrupt bargain between the labor movement and the Democratic Party. Committed to a far-left political agenda—and to enhancing their own power—union bosses funnel at least half a billion dollars into Democratic coffers every year. And they do it, illegally, by using dues money that workers are forced to pay as a condition of their employment—dues money that each year brings the unions $17 billion, all of it tax-free. What do labor bosses get in return? The power to call the shots in Democratic campaigns and on party policy, extraordinary influence at all levels of government, billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded federal grants, and special legal privileges that leave them free to act as they please, no matter the consequences for the American people. The cycle of corruption is seemingly endless. Chavez and Gray name names, exposing the many politicians who are in Big Labor’s pocket—including the leading lights of the Democratic Party. Betrayal also reveals: • Big Labor’s all-out efforts in the 2004 election, including how just one local union has launched a $35-million campaign to unseat President Bush • How corrupt union officials use members’ hard-earned money to fund lavish lifestyles—and how their Democratic supporters let them get away with it • How unions flout the law by failing to report any of their political spending to the IRS • How a government report uncovered the Democrats’ sellout to Big Labor—but how the unions and the Democrats sued to keep the report from going public • How the U.S. government lets unions practice legalized terrorism against American citizens • How public-employee unions extort concessions from the government and put Americans at risk by refusing to provide vital services like policing and firefighting • How Americans now live under a system of legal apartheid—one set of rules for labor bosses, another for the rest of us All of us foot the bill for this corrupt system. Now it’s up to us to do something about it.

Book Immigrants Unions The New Us Labor Mkt

Download or read book Immigrants Unions The New Us Labor Mkt written by Immanuel Ness and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2005-06-15 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, New Yorkers have been surprised to see workers they had taken for granted—Mexicans in greengroceries, West African supermarket deliverymen and South Asian limousine drivers—striking, picketing, and seeking support for better working conditions. Suddenly, businesses in New York and the nation had changed and were now dependent upon low-paid immigrants to fill the entry-level jobs that few native-born Americans would take. Immigrants, Unions, and the New U.S. Labor Market tells the story of these workers' struggle for living wages, humane working conditions, and the respect due to all people. It describes how they found the courage to organize labor actions at a time when most laborers have become quiescent and while most labor unions were ignoring them. Showing how unions can learn from the example of these laborers, and demonstrating the importance of solidarity beyond the workplace, Immanuel Ness offers a telling look into the lives of some of America's newest immigrants.

LONGMANS, GREEN, AND CO. 39 PATERNOSTER ROW, LONDON NEW YORK, BOMBAY, AND CALCUTTA PREFACE. BY VISCOUNT MILNER. For years past no word has been more constantly on the lips of all men interested in social questions than the word unemployment. And latterly it has also played a leading part in our political controversies. There is a profound difference of opinion between Tariff Reformers and the supporters of " Free Trade " as to the fiscal arrangements best calculated to improve the amount and the character of employment in this country. But the more thoughtful members of both the contending parties are agreed that fiscal arrangements, however deeply they affect the amount and character of employment, are not the only factor in the case, and that, with our modern industrial system, seasons of unemployment will, in a greater or less degree, continue to threaten the workman, whatever fiscal policy we may adopt. As Mr. Jackson well puts it in his opening chapter, "it is clear that side by side with any fiscal reform and any general social policy certain measures specifically directed against unemployment are necessary." This book is the careful attempt of an expert, and a life-long student of industrial conditions, to indicate the lines which such measures ought to follow 212288 As such it is, as it seems to me, entitled to the thoughtful attention of all those, who have the welfare of the wageearning classes really at heart, and in considering its arguments Tariff Reformers and Free Traders alike can afford for the nonce to lay their differences on the fiscal question on one side. And a thorough study of the subject is an urgent necessity at the present time. The State is now definitely committed to an active policy with regard to...
