Book Revisiting Caribbean Labour

Download or read book Revisiting Caribbean Labour written by O. Nigel Bolland and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This retrospective on past Caribbean labour struggles provides the beginnings of a region-wide comparative perspective. Extending initial insights from the Anglophone to the Hispanic Caribbean, and from the momentous upheavals of the 1930s to the present, the essays examine the pivotal role which labour has played, and continues to play, in shaping not only the political culture of the region and its history, but also its domestic and social organization. Moreover, the essays tease out many of the activities and much of the activism which has been obscured not only by biases in the historical record, but by those of the labour leadership. Thus, the role of women in labour and revolutionary activities, and the role of memory on historical consciousness and contemporary activism are crucially brought to the surface. Revisiting Caribbean Labour is written o provide today s Caribean labour movements with an understanding of their history that can help them more effectively face the challenges of today. It is an expansion and tribute to the work of O. Nigel Bolland on the British Caribbean. "

Book Caribbean Labor and Politics

Download or read book Caribbean Labor and Politics written by Perry Mars and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having more in common than their deaths on the same day in 1997, the late Cheddi Jagan of Guyana and Michael Manley of Jamaica both represented a radical perspective in modern Caribbean politics. Jagan and Manley each had a bold and creative ability to connect labor and politics and made it their priority to minimize poverty and inequality and to enhance the welfare of the Caribbean's disadvantaged and dispossessed. Caribbean Labor and Politics looks closely at the legacies of Jagan and Manley and their ramifications for the political and economic struggles of the Caribbean region and the world. This edited volume brings together a variety of studies on the lives, works, and intellectual and practical contributions of these two stalwart political leaders. The chapters focus primarily on Jagan's and Manley's years as heads of state of their respective countries and also encapsulate their pre-political years-mainly their growing-up experiences and their organizational work in the labor movement. The core contributions of these men are characterized in terms of their pivotal struggles towards the realization of what we term the "working class project."

Book The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad

Download or read book The Politics of Labour and Development in Trinidad written by Ray Kiely and published by University of the West Indies Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis is a labour history of Trinidad and Tobago, concentrating on the period from 1937 to 1990. The study attempts to show that there is not a unified or homogenous working class, and for this reason both traditional Marxist and industrial relations theories are rejected. Instead, the history of labour focuses on how the working classes have been divided by factors such as race, gender, class structure and politics. These divisions are used as an explanation for the absence of a popular socialist party in the country. It concludes that the economic recession of the 1980s has led to the worst crisis in the history of the labour movement, but at the same time, this has laid the framework for a new strategy of social movement unionism, which attempts to constructively engage with, rather than ignore, divisions within the working classes. The main sources of data were documentary and archival material, and in particular, reports made by the British TUC and Colonial Office, industrial relations legislation, and trade union and political party documents and manifestoes. For the contemporary period, these sources of data were supplemented by fifteen interviews with leading figures in trade union and labour politics. The work is based on a macro approach to the study of labour, and as such constitutes a new and original approach to the study of labour in Trinidad and Tobago. In addition, more contemporary trade union documents and interviews provided the researcher with new and original material.

Book excerpt: Quotes from this Book Spain brought nothing to the New World except the horse and Roman Catholicism.... The French wished to expand; the Spanish wished to hold on to everything they could; the Dutch wished to be left alone; the English planters wished to make money, at whose expense was irrelevant; and the English Government also wished to make money at the expense of the English planters in a chain of exploitation irrespective of place and people. ....Thus, the only way in which whites can protect their economic power is to accommodate to black political power which means the weakening of social distinctions associated with race. ....Its general, the Garveyite Africanist orientation did not sufficiently appreciate that it was impossible to restore a racial and tribal community and continuity violently broken for more than two hundred years. ....Jamaican Democratic Socialism and Guyanese Cooperative Socialism can be directly traced to the appeal to the trade unions for mass support....Party politics ante-dated organized unionism in Trinidad, thus Eric Williams' collective nationalism. ....Barbadian conservatism can be traced to its apparent socio-psychological difference from the other states of the area. ....The economy of the country floundered, and the country remained in tact by massive foreign borrowing from willing lenders.... There also seems to be a creeping social and moral malaise in the country. ..".we obviously will have to find some means whereby the problem of trade in the world is made the subject of political management by agreement." .... The intellectuals of the Caribbean are at arms with frustrations due to the lack of vision of their governments in implementing meaningful and cohesive policies for the national good. ....Even the concept of MDCs and LDCs is being questioned.... Conflict also exists between CARICOM states with different natural resource endowments like oil and gas rich Trinidad and Tobago and the Windward Islands over the banana issue. .... The question that must be asked is: Is CARICOM running behind the metaphoric bus? ....The Commonwealth Caribbean States should individually and collectively forge economic relations with Brazil in the vast area of the manufacturing of parts for various goods especially in light manufacturing.

Book A History of Organized Labor in the English Speaking West Indies

This book was released on 2004-10-30 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the history of organized labor in all of the countries of the English-speaking West Indies. It is the fourth in a series of histories of the organized labor movement in Latin America and the Caribbean. Alexander traces the countries' origins, early struggles, experiences with collective bargaining, and the key roles in the politics of their respective countries, particularly their participation in the struggle for self-government and independence. He also examines the international organizations of trade unions in the West Indian area, and their association with the hemisphere and worldwide labor groups. Book excerpt: Caribbean history is replete with the achievements of women in the region's ceaseless dynamic struggle "to be." Yet their continuing creative contributions to the process have been too frequently treated as a footnote to the text of that history of liberation - itself a celebration of the invincibility of the human spirit against such odds as...the persistent exploitation of labor, which is still being resisted through contemporary battles for workplace justice, equality, recognition, and status.
