Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts Containing Treatises on the Sacraments, Vol. 2: Catechism of the Church of Geneva, Forms of Prayer, and Confessions of Faith Without attempting anything like a complete analysis Of this celebrated Catechism, it may not be improper briefly to glance at its contents, and the manner in which they are arranged. The general division of the Catechism is into five heads, which treat respectively of Faith, The Law, Prayer, The Word of God, and the Sacraments. The first head, viz., faith, after laying down the funda mental principles, that the chief end of human existence is to know God so as to confide in him, and that this know ledge is to be found only in Christ, contains an exposition of The Apostles' Creed, which, for this purpose, is divided into four parts; the first relating to God the Fat-her, the second to. Christ the Son, the third to The Holy Spirit, and the fourth to The Church, and the divine blessings bestowed upon her. Book A Clear and Simple Treatise on the Lord s Supper

Download or read book A Clear and Simple Treatise on the Lord s Supper written by Theodore Beza and published by Reformation Heritage Books. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodore Beza's A Clear and Simple Treatise Respecting the Lord's Supper (1559) advances a tireless defense of the Reformed perspective on the Lord's Supper, responding chapter by chapter to specific arguments raised against John Calvin by his Lutheran opponent, Joachim Westphal. Beza makes great use of the concept of metonymy, or a figure of speech, in his interpretation of the words of institution, yet he equally champions the position that the Lord's Supper is not a bare symbol and that in it we have true communion with the risen Christ. And like Calvin, Beza refers extensively to the church fathers, especially Augustine, in defense of his position. This often-overlooked treatise marks some of the major differences between the Reformed and the Lutheran movements during the so-called second generation of the Reformation. A critical issue at the time, sacramental theology was at the forefront of the original break with Rome and prevented the various Protestant movements from uniting. Its translation into English from the original Latin provides a wider opportunity for those interested in these movements to learn more about some of the substantial issues of the period. Table of Contents: A Clear and Simple Treatise on the Lord’s Supper, in Which the Published Slanders of Joachim Westphal Are Finally Refuted Appendix A: A System of Doctrine on the Sacramental Substance Appendix B: The Moral, Ceremonial, and Political Law of God as Derived from the Books of Moses and Distributed into Particular Classes

Book Calvin on the Death of Christ

Download or read book Calvin on the Death of Christ written by Paul A Hartog and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-01-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin’s understanding of the extent of the atonement achieved in Christ’s death is one of the most contested questions in historical theology. In common thought, Calvin’s name is closely associated with the ‘limited atonement’ stance canonized within the ‘TULIP’ acronym, but Calvin’s personal endorsement of a strictly particularist view, whereby Christ died for the elect alone, is debateable. In Calvin on the Death of Christ, Paul Hartog re-examines Calvin’s writing on the subject, traces the various resulting historical trajectories, and engages with the full spectrum of more recent scholarship. In so doing, he makes clear that, while Calvin undoubtedly believed in unconditional election, he also repeatedly spoke of Christ dying for ‘all’ or for ‘the world’. These phrases must be held central if we are to discover Calvin’s own view of the subject. Hartog’s conclusions will surprise some, and may hold significant implications for the Calvinist tradition today. Throughout, however, they are cogently articulated and sensitively pitched.

Book Restoration through Redemption John Calvin Revisited

Download or read book Restoration through Redemption John Calvin Revisited written by Henk van den Belt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-01-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Restoration through Redemption offers examples of three ways in which John Calvin’s theology can be revisited: by analysis, assessment, and reception. This volume contains analyses of Calvin’s position on the trinity and on politics, as well as assessments of his theology for evolutionary biology and comparative ecclesiology. It also discusses the reception of his heritage, for instance, in North America and South Africa. The central theme in this volume is Calvin’s approach to the renewal of creation that hinges on Christ the Redeemer. One of the golden threads is Calvin’s emphasis upon the meditatio on the future life, the turning of the believer towards the eschatological perspective. Contributors include: J.
