Book The Electric Interurban Railways in America

Download or read book The Electric Interurban Railways in America written by George Woodman Hilton and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 1964 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most colorful yet neglected eras in American transportation history is re-created in this definitive history of the electric interurbans. Built with the idea of attracting short-distance passenger traffic and light freight, the interurbans were largely constructed in the early 1900s. The rise of the automobile and motor transport caused the industry to decline after World War I, and the depression virtually annihilated the industry by the middle 1930s. Part I describes interurban construction, technology, passenger and freight traffic, financial history, and final decline and abandonment. Part II presents individual histories (with route maps) of the more than 300 companies of the interurban industry. Reviews "A first-rate work of such detail and discernment that it might well serve as a model for all corporate biographies. . . . A wonderfully capable job of distillation." —Trains "Few economic, social, and business historians can afford to miss this definitive study." —Mississippi Valley Historical Review "All seekers after nostalgia will be interested in this encyclopedic volume on the days when the clang, clang of the trolley was the most exciting travel sound the suburbs knew." —Harper's Magazine "A fascinating and instructive chapter in the history of American transportation." —Journal of Economic History "The hint that behind the grand facade of scholarship lies an expanse of boyish enthusiasm is strengthened by a lovingly amassed and beautifully reproduced collection of 37 photographs." —The Nation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early twentieth century, an epic battle was waged across America between the interurban railway and the automobile, two technologies that arose at roughly the same time in the late 1890s. Nowhere was this conflict more evident than in the Midwest, and specifically Indiana, where cities of industry such as Indianapolis, Gary, and Terre Haute were growing faster every day. By 1904, Indianapolis had opened the Traction Terminal, which was widely acclaimed to be the largest and most impressive interurban station in the world. Yet, today there is only 90-mile remnant of this one great system still operating within Indiana. Featuring over 90 illustrations and featuring contemporary accounts and newspaper articles from the period, Electric Indiana is a biographical study of the rise and fall of a onetime important transportation technology that achieved its most impressive development within the Hoosier state.

Book excerpt: No industry rose as rapidly and collapsed as quickly as the electric interurban industry in America. From a peak of over 16,000 miles, it was practically extinct by the mid-1930s. Only the Iowa Traction Company in Mason City, Iowa, and the South Shore Line running between Chicago and South Bend still operate. The interurban lines of Iowa differed from most of their counterparts as they were built to handle carload freight as well as providing electrically powered passenger service; the state unofficially came to be known as "the land of the steam road interurbans." While most Midwest interurban lines had become weed-grown abandoned rights-of-way, many Iowa interurbans continued to carry freight and passengers well into the 1950s.The largest of the Iowa interurbans, the Fort Dodge, Des Moines and Southern, contrived to survive the decades through the use of steam, electric, and diesel power to haul freight and carry passengers. Noted railroad historian Don L. Hofsommer chronicles the history of this long-lived interurban and masterfully captures the spirit of the times in which it operated. Originally conceived as a freight-hauling steam railroad, the Fort Dodge Line evolved into an electrically operated freight and passenger carrier that managed to compete and survive in an area crisscrossed with large steam railroads. It was owing to this line's "feisty" character that it was able to survive in spite of spirited rail and highway competition, the financial hardship of the Great Depression, and a catastrophic flood in its final years of electric operation. While most surviving interurbans had morphed into commuter railroads, the Fort Dodge Line remained a true interurban, operating a couple of leisurely round trips each day with classic wood interurban cars. It was its freight service and its feisty character, taking on both competition and the elements, that enabled this line to survive as long as it did and become a cherished memory among Iowans in the Des Moines River Valley.
