Book Discourses on the State and Grandeurs of Jesus

Download or read book Discourses on the State and Grandeurs of Jesus written by Pierre de Bérulle and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pierre de Bérulle (1575?1629) is one of the foremost personalities of early modern Catholicism. As the founder of the "French school" of spirituality, he has exercised a profound influence on the Church from the seventeenth century to the present day. Until now, however, very little of Bérulle's writings have been available in English. This volume provides the first complete English translation of his best-known work, first printed in Paris in 1623 and titled Discourses on the State and Grandeurs of Jesus, by the Ineffable Union of the Deity with Humanity, and the Submission and Servitude that Is Due Him and His Most Holy Mother in Response to This Wondrous State. Composed in his maturity, this work expresses Bérulle's theology of the Man-God, whose self-emptying has enabled us to become "capable" of God. In contrast to other spiritual writers who taught that mystical union with God follows the extinction of all sensory and conceptual awareness and all activity of willing, Bérulle's focus is on the faithful soul's participation in what he calls Jesus' "states," or inner dispositions. The state that Bérulle describes and honors supremely in this text is Jesus' state of self-emptying in the mystery of the Incarnation. In the hypostatic union, our humanity in Christ is lifted up to heaven, and Christ is the first fruit of humanity-made-divine, the "firstborn among many brothers." Through him we become children of God by adoption, participants in God's divine being. This is an outstanding translation, conveying not only the meaning but also the beauty and rhetorical features of the original. The Discourses will repay reading as a poignant source of personal devotion, a primary text of the Catholic Reformation, and a classic of spiritual theology.

Book The Seven Deadly Sins

  • ISBN : 0813230225
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book The Seven Deadly Sins written by Kevin M. Clarke and published by Catholic University of America Press + ORM . This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Read this not just for intellectual enjoyment but to discover a centuries-old, proven path for conquering your worst sins” (Brandon Vogt, author of Why I Am Catholic). Gluttony. Lust. Greed. Anger. Sloth. Envy. Pride. The capital vices are the gateway drugs to countless sins. But where did this tradition come from? Unsurprisingly, it can be traced back to the teachings of the Church Fathers, whose words—included in this book—answer such questions as: So how do the capital sins spawn other vices in the soul? How does one cultivate the virtues that heal the soul from those vices? How are gluttony and lust related? What role does almsgiving have in soothing the passion of anger? As the path of the book descends through the vices, the words of the Fathers will assist readers in being more realistic about the attacks upon the soul. Edifying and medicinal, each chapter begins with vice and ends with virtue, so one’s path through the chapters represents a sort of ascent out of sin and on to the road to righteousness. The text gives special attention to the thoughts of Augustine of Hippo, Evagrius of Pontus, John Cassian, Gregory the Great, and Maximus the Confessor. “An illuminating survey of the Church Fathers’ wisdom on the capital vices that have burdened us since time immemorial.” —Curtis A. Martin, Founder and CEO of FOCUS “A wonderfully helpful compendium of insights and advice from the Church Fathers . . . You will be astonished at how relevant and applicable is this ancient wisdom to the life of the modern-day Christian. Highly recommended.” —James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Book excerpt: "In the Cathedral Church of Mary of the Assumption in Tbilisi, Georgia, in Eastern Europe, "the Word of Life" is proclaimed in the Liturgy, and also told through one hundred and thirty icons of scenes from the Bible, elegantly arranged along the Cathedral's side walls. For the faithful, these icons uncover the thread of love that can draw them to enter, through prayer, into contemplation of the image of the invisible God." "Thirty of these icons, which tell the story of the life of Jesus, are reproduced in this book together with the relevant biblical texts and a commentary written especially for the English language edition by Francis J. Moloney, SDB. Carefully chosen extracts from early Church Fathers shed further light on each of the events portrayed in the icons."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Death Judgement Heaven and Hell

Download or read book Death Judgement Heaven and Hell written by Pecknold and published by Catholic University of America Press. This book was released on 2019-02-06 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, canon lawyer and writer Edward Condon compiles a book full of wisdom and compelling insights. More than anything, the Fathers warn us that our life is short, and the reckoning for how we have lived it eternal. The urgency of the Church’s message, brought to life in the sayings of the Fathers, comes to remind us of our true calling and inheritance in baptism, and of the richness of the heavenly reward, which is not so much the fruit of our efforts on Earth but the fulfillment of God’s promise of love to us. The terror of hell is not the threat of the dictator, but a dire warning of the true scope of our freedom as children of God.

Book The Pericope Adulterae the Gospel of John and the Literacy of Jesus

Download or read book The Pericope Adulterae the Gospel of John and the Literacy of Jesus written by Chris Keith and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although consistently overlooked or dismissed, John 8.6, 8 in the "Pericope Adulterae" is the only place in canonical or non-canonical Jesus tradition that portrays Jesus as writing. After establishing that John 8.6, 8 is indeed a claim that Jesus could write, this book offers a new interpretation and transmission history of the "Pericope Adulterae." Not only did the pericope s interpolator place the story in John s Gospel in order to highlight the claim that Jesus could write, but he did so at John 7.53 8.11 as a result of carefully reading the Johannine narrative. The final chapter of the book proposes a plausible socio-historical context for the insertion of the story.

Book Shining Garment of the Text

Download or read book Shining Garment of the Text written by Alison Jasper and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-09-01 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the prologue of John's Gospel as a case-study in feminist biblical criticism, the author engages with a persistent view that the biblical text is seriously compromised by its association with patriarchal values. Close analysis of five interpretations by Augustine, Hildegard von Bingen, Martin Luther, Adrienne von Speyr and Rudolf Bultmann shows how, unavoidably, interpretation clothes the biblical text with the varied and dazzling patterns of the patriarchal reading context. But in a second turn, drawing on the techniques of both structuralist criticism and deconstruction, and offering three further inventive readings of this powerful passage, Jasper reflects woman and the feminine in the shining garment of her own contextualized reading.
