Book Tracking Universal Health Coverage

Download or read book Tracking Universal Health Coverage written by World Health Organization and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is the first of its kind to measure health service coverage and financial protection to assess countries' progress towards universal health coverage. It shows that at least 400 million people do not have access to one or more essential health services and 6% of people in low- and middle-income countries are tipped into or pushed further into extreme poverty because of health spending. Universal health coverage (UHC) means that all people receive the quality essential health services they need without being exposed to financial hardship. A significant number of countries at all levels of development are embracing the goal of UHC as the right thing to do for their citizens. It is a powerful social equalizer and contributes to social cohesion and stability. Every country has the potential to improve the performance of its health system in the main dimensions of UHC: coverage of quality services and financial protection for all. Priorities strategies and implementation plans for UHC will differ from one country to another. Enhanced and expanded monitoring of health under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should seek to build on that experience sharpening our focus on the key health service and financial protection interventions that underpin UHC. Effective UHC tracking is central to achieving the global goals for poverty alleviation and health improvement set by the World Bank Group and WHO. Without it policymakers and decision-takers cannot say exactly where they are or set a course for where they want to go. They cannot know whether they are focussing their efforts in the right areas or whether their efforts are making a difference. Monitoring is thus fundamental to the achievement of UHC objectives. It will also be vital to the realization of the SDGs. This report is a critical step to show how monitoring progress can be done telling us what the state of coverage of interventions and financial protection is and telling us where to focus most.

This book was released on 2019-01-27 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2015, building on the advances of the Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations adopted Sustainable Development Goals that include an explicit commitment to achieve universal health coverage by 2030. However, enormous gaps remain between what is achievable in human health and where global health stands today, and progress has been both incomplete and unevenly distributed. In order to meet this goal, a deliberate and comprehensive effort is needed to improve the quality of health care services globally. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm: Improving Health Care Worldwide focuses on one particular shortfall in health care affecting global populations: defects in the quality of care. This study reviews the available evidence on the quality of care worldwide and makes recommendations to improve health care quality globally while expanding access to preventive and therapeutic services, with a focus in low-resource areas. Crossing the Global Quality Chasm emphasizes the organization and delivery of safe and effective care at the patient/provider interface. This study explores issues of access to services and commodities, effectiveness, safety, efficiency, and equity. Focusing on front line service delivery that can directly impact health outcomes for individuals and populations, this book will be an essential guide for key stakeholders, governments, donors, health systems, and others involved in health care.

Book The Path to Universal Health Coverage in Bangladesh

Download or read book The Path to Universal Health Coverage in Bangladesh written by Sameh El-Saharty and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bangladesh is committed to achieving universal health coverage (UHC) by 2032; to this end, the government of Bangladesh is exploring policy options to increase fiscal space for health and expand coverage while improving service quality and availability. Despite Bangladesh’s impressive strides in improving its economic and social development outcomes, the government still confronts health financing and service delivery challenges. In its review of the health system, this study highlights the limited fiscal space for implementing UHC in Bangladesh, particularly given low public spending for health and high out-of-pocket expenditure. The crisis in the country’s human resources for health (HRH) compounds public health service delivery inefficiencies. As the government explores options to finance its UHC plan, it must recognize that reform of its service delivery system with particular focus on HRH has to be the centerpiece of any policy initiative.

Book A WHO Public Health Approach to Ending AIDS in the Global South

Download or read book A WHO Public Health Approach to Ending AIDS in the Global South written by Charles F. Gilks and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In highlighting how a WHO Public Health Approach (PHA) has been successfully used in developing countries to provide HIV/AIDS patients with antiretroviral therapy (ART), this important book provides a template for how the PHA can be implemented to treat other chronic but non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well. With over 28 million people globally now receiving treatment for HIV/AIDS, it’s clear there are lessons to be learnt from the provision of ART which have great relevance for NCD care and towards achieving universal health coverage in the global south. The first section of the book provides a detailed overview of the strategy that enabled such a successful programme to be taken place, the challenges faced and its evolution over time. The book then moves on to assert that by approaching other chronic NCDs in a similar way, focussing on populations with integrated long-term and short-term person-centred care, there is a pathway towards universal health care and Universal Health Coverage across the developing world. Discussing many of the most pressing diseases and public health issues affecting these regions, this book provides global health scholars and practitioners with a detailed analysis of the challenges faced in tackling these diseases, but also an integrated person-centred health-care approach by which these challenges may be met.

Book Balancing the Socio political and Medico ethical Dimensions of HIV

Download or read book Balancing the Socio political and Medico ethical Dimensions of HIV written by Amos Laar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-07-08 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Responding to public health challenges at the global and local levels can give rise to an array of tensions. To assure sustainable public health, these tensions need to be meaningfully balanced. Using empirical evidence and lived experiences relating to HIV from the global south, this book enunciates the many dimensions of national-level responses to HIV/AIDS including conceptual, philosophical, and methodological perspectives from public health, public policy, bioethics, and social sciences. Calling out glaring neglects, the book makes a bold recommendation for the destabilization of the naturalness with which national HIV/AIDS responses ignore the socio-political and medico-ethical dimensions of HIV. The case made is grounded in the philosophy of social public health. Such a critical perspective is not unique to Ghana’s response to HIV/AIDS but serves as emblematic voice for similarly situated settings of the global south. The book is also timely. It is written at a time when public health actors are repositioning themselves to be competent users of not only pharmaceutic vaccines, but also social vaccines. Topics explored in the chapters include: Public health approaches to HIV and AIDS Access to life-saving public health goods by persons infected or affected by HIV “They are criminals”: AIDS, the law, harm reduction, and the socially excluded Developing socially and ethically responsive National AIDS policies Balancing the Socio-political and Medico-ethical Dimensions of HIV: A Social Public Health Approach is compelling reading for a broad spectrum of readers. The book will appeal to professionals, scholars, and students in public health, public policy, bioethics, and social sciences, as well as medical anthropologists, sociologists, and global health scholars. Public health economists, lay politicians, and civil society organizations advocating for health equity will find the book useful as well.

Book Handbook for conducting assessments of barriers to effective coverage with health services

Download or read book Handbook for conducting assessments of barriers to effective coverage with health services written by Theadora Swift KOLLER and published by World Health Organization. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the most recent data available , 4.5 billion people were not fully covered by essential health services in their countries in 2021. Likewise, in 2019, the total population experiencing financial hardship was estimated to be 2 billion people. To scale up action to leave no one behind, WHO’s Fourteenth General Programme of Work, 2025-2028 (GPW 14) has an explicit and strong commitment to equity. In support of this, WHO has released a handbook with methods for the identification of barriers to effective coverage with health services. The 8-module handbook applies mixed method research approaches -- grounded in the Tanahashi framework for effective coverage -- to focus on barriers experienced by potential users and non-users of health services. The handbook facilitates the capturing of evidence on the interface between the population and the services. The handbook has four objectives. 1.To orient national authorities and partners on key concepts, definitions, frameworks and principles relevant to barriers assessments. 2.To build the capacity of national authorities and partners to design a research plan and apply diverse methods (e.g. informant interviews, literature reviews, quantitative analysis and focus groups) in barriers assessments. 3.To provide guidance for reporting on barrier assessment findings in a clear and actionable manner and convening key stakeholders to deliberate next steps. 4.To adapt the methods for humanitarian contexts, accounting for the need for differentiated approaches.
