Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If there is a true church, which one is it? Jose Ventilacion is a minister in Iglesia ni Cristo (Church of Christ in Tagalog). Like his denomination's founder, he claims that the original Christian Church apostatized around the end of the first century and totally disappeared from history, only to be reëstablished in the Philippines in 1914. Borrowing from the Jehovah's Witnesses, Iglesia ni Cristo rejects the Trinity. Borrowing from Protestant Fundamentalism, it rejects Catholicism-but with a vehemence that startles even Fundamentalists. This debate was held before an audience of 3,500, nearly all of them members of Iglesia ni Cristo. The question for the evening was whether the Church founded by Christ is to be identified with Iglesia ni Cristo or with the Catholic Church. Not a few listeners went away surprised. Karl Keating is the author of Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Booked for Life: The Bibliographic Memoir of an Accidental Apologist, The New Geocentrists, the How to Fail at Hiking series, and other works. His avocations include backpacking, studying languages, and playing the baroque mandolino. His author website is karlkeating.com.
Download or read book Tracking Down the True Church of Christ written by Shell Abegglen and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2015-03-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Global Christian Encyclopedia, there are forty-one thousand different denominations of Christianity in the world. Since there was only one true church of Christ at the time that he and his apostles originally organized the primitive church, why are there now forty-one thousand variations of his church? Where on earth did all these separately organized religious establishments of Christian worship come from, and more importantly, which one of them embodies the precepts of Christ's original church? The overall "falling away" and inevitable decay of the original primitive church was definitively prophesied by Isaiah, the apostle Peter, the apostle Paul, and even by the Savior himself, as is outlined in this book. The purpose of this book is not to stir up controversy or to disparage any particular church but only to direct sincere Christians back to the true doctrines of the Gospel and to track down the true church of Christ.

Book excerpt: Straightforward answers about Roman Catholicism for a Protestant audience The Roman Catholic faith is one of the world's most widespread religious traditions, yet the unique aspects of Roman Catholicism elicit perennial questions from adherents and outsiders alike. Such questions tend to fall into three major categories: historical backgrounds, theological matters, and personal relationships. Using Catholic Church documents and the writings of Catholic scholars, Baptist systematic theologian Gregg R. Allison distills the teachings of Catholicism around forty common questions about Catholic foundations, beliefs, and practices. The accessible question-and-answer format guides readers to the areas of interest, including: Where do Roman Catholic and Protestant beliefs differ? What happens during a Roman Catholic Mass? How does Roman Catholicism understand the biblical teaching about Mary? Who are the saints and what is their role? How can my Roman Catholic loved ones and I talk about the gospel? 40 Questions About Roman Catholicism explores theology and practice, doctrine and liturgy, sacraments and Mariology, contributions and scandals, and many other things, clarifying both real and perceived differences and similarities with other Christian traditions.
Download or read book A Fake Saint and the True Church written by Stefania Tutino and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book uncovers the remarkable story of a fake saint to tell a tale about truth. It begins at the end of the 1650s, when a large quantity of forged documents suddenly appeared throughout the Kingdom of Naples. Narrating the life and deeds of a previously unknown medieval saint named Giovanni Calà, the trove generated much excitement around the kingdom. No one was more delighted by the news than Carlo Calà, Giovanni's wealthy and politically influential seventeenth-century descendant. Attracted by the prospect of adding a saint to the family tree, Carlo presented Giovanni's case to the Roman Curia. The Catholic authorities immediately realized that the sources were forged and that Giovanni was not real (let alone holy). Yet, it took more than two decades before the forgery was exposed: why? Vividly reconstructing the intricate case of the supposed saint, the book reveals the tensions between historical and theological truth. How much could the truth of doctrine depend on the truth of the facts before religion lost its connection with the supernatural? To what extent could theology ignore the truth of history without ending up engulfed in falsity and deceit? This story of a fake saint illuminates early modern tensions. But the struggles to distinguish between facts, opinions, and beliefs remain with us. Examining how our predecessors dealt with the relationship between truth and authenticity guides us too in thinking through what is true and what is not"--
Download or read book Sede Vacante written by Griff Ruby and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many concerned Catholics today, seeing the ways and teachings of Jorge Mario Bergoglio (Pope Francis), are asking themselves, Can that man be a real Catholic pope? From the time of Paul VI, a small contingent of faithful Catholics known as sede vacantists have expressed the gravest doubts that he and each of his successors in turn since then were real popes of the Catholic Church. This minority view, long dismissed by most, now emerges into a wide public view as Jorge Bergoglio seems to go out of his way to puncture every expectation a Catholic should have for a Vicar of Christ. But this latest step in the deCatholicization of the church is merely the fullest flowering yet seen of an erroneous direction taken during the Second Vatican Council. Those looking to find detailed lists of all the abominable acts and teachings of Jorge Bergoglio or his immediate few predecessors or justly deserved ecclesiastical anathemas heaped upon them will doubtless be disappointed. Rather, the severe theological implications of the Sede Vacante findings are explored and vindicated for the first time in a systematic and complete book form. In this volume, a theory to account for the Sede Vacante findings is academically ventured, based on the theological findings presented in the previous volume and on events doctrinally predicted therein and herein documented.

Download or read book The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down written by R. Albert Mohler and published by HarperChristian + ORM. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Our Father, who art in heaven….” The opening words of the Lord’s Prayer have become so familiar that we often speak them without a thought, sometimes without any awareness that we are speaking at all. But to the disciples who first heard these words from Jesus, the prayer was a thunderbolt, a radical new way to pray that changed them and the course of history. Far from a safe series of comforting words, the Lord’s Prayer makes extraordinary claims, topples every earthly power, and announces God’s reign over all things in heaven and on earth. In this groundbreaking new book, R. Albert Mohler Jr. recaptures the urgency and transformational nature of the prayer, revealing once again its remarkable, world-upending power. Step by step, phrase by phrase, The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down explains what these words mean and how we are to pray them. The Lord’s Prayer is the most powerful prayer in the Bible, taught by Jesus to those closest to him. We desperately need to relearn its power and practice. The Prayer That Turns the World Upside Down shows us how.
Download or read book Building the Church of England written by Stephen Tong and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Were mid-Tudor evangelicals roaring lions or meek lambs? Did they struggle with a minority complex, or were they comfortable with their position of political ascendancy under Edward VI? How did their theological blueprint of the ‘True Church’ fit their temporal realities? By relocating the Book of Common Prayer at the centre of the English Reformation, Stephen Tong gives new significance to two underacknowledged drivers of reform: ecclesiology and liturgy. Edwardian reformers caused a sensation in England by engaging with these questions, which spilled over into Ireland, and continued to cast a shadow over subsequent generations of the English Protestants.
Download or read book Face Off with an Ex Priest written by Karl Keating and published by Rasselas House. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An ex-priest takes on a Catholic apologist. What could go wrong? Bart Brewer once was a Catholic priest. Then he "unpoped" and became a Baptist. For years he led a ministry dedicated to bringing Catholics into "real" Christianity. He went around the country regaling Fundamentalist crowds with what purported to be the inside story of the Church of Rome. Then he made the mistake of agreeing to debate a Catholic apologist. The topic was "Is the Roman Catholic Church Christian?" Brewer gave a firm "No." He warned the audience darkly about "Papist" errors. He argued for sola scriptura and against Catholic teachings. The hall shook with his rhetoric, but the result was not quite what he had hoped for. Karl Keating is the author of Catholicism and Fundamentalism, Booked for Life: The Bibliographic Memoir of an Accidental Apologist, The New Geocentrists, the How to Fail at Hiking series, and other works. Download or read book Modern Historiography in the Making written by Kasper Risbjerg Eskildsen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-24 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the end of the 19th century, German historical scholarship had grown to great prominence. Academics around the world imitated their German colleagues. Intellectuals described historical scholarship as a foundation of the modern worldview. To many, the modern age was an 'age of history'. This book investigates how German historical scholarship acquired this status. Modern Historiography in the Making begins with the early Enlightenment, when scholars embraced the study of the past as a modernizing project, undermining dogmatic systems of belief and promoting progressive ideals, such a tolerance, open mindedness and reform-readiness. Kasper Risbjerg Eskildsen looks at how this modernizing project remained an important motivation and justification for historical scholarship until the 20th century. Eskildsen successfully argues that German historical scholarship was not, as we have been told since the early 20th century, a product of historicism, but rather of Enlightenment ideals. The book offers this radical revision of the history of scholarship by focusing on practices of research and education. It examines how scholars worked and why they cared. It shows how their efforts forever changed our relationship not only to the past, but also to the world we live in.
Download or read book God s Double Agent written by Bob Fu and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tens of millions of Christians live in China today, many of them leading double lives or in hiding from a government that relentlessly persecutes them. Bob Fu, whom the Wall Street Journal called "The pastor of China's underground railroad," is fighting to protect his fellow believers from persecution, imprisonment, and even death. God's Double Agent is his fascinating and riveting story. Bob Fu is indeed God's double agent. By day Fu worked as a full-time lecturer in a communist school; by night he pastored a house church and led an underground Bible school. This can't-put-it-down book chronicles Fu's conversion to Christianity, his arrest and imprisonment for starting an illegal house church, his harrowing escape, and his subsequent rise to prominence in the United States as an advocate for his brethren. God's Double Agent will inspire readers even as it challenges them to boldly proclaim and live out their faith in a world that is at times indifferent, and at other times murderously hostile, to those who spread the gospel.
Download or read book Lapsed written by Monica Dux and published by HarperCollins Australia. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing your religion is harder than it looks ... From devout ten-year-old performing the part of Jesus in a primary school play to blaspheming, undergraduate atheist, Monica Dux and her attitude to the Catholic Church changed profoundly over a decade. Eventually, she calmed down and was just 'lapsed'. Then, on a family trip to Rome, her young daughter expressed a desire to be baptised. Monica found herself re-examining her own childhood and how Catholicism had shaped her. Was it really out of her system or was it in her blood for life? In Lapsed, Monica sets out to find the answer. Her investigations lead her to test a miracle cure in Lourdes and visit the grave of a headless Saint who claimed to be married to Christ (and wore a wedding ring made of his foreskin to prove it). She speaks to canon lawyers, abuse survivors and even a nun who insists that the Virgin Mary starts her car every morning. With wry humour and razor-sharp observations, Lapsed is the story of one woman's attempt to exorcise her religious upbringing, and to answer the question, is Catholicism like a blood group and, if so, is it possible to get a total transfusion?
