Through informative text, sharp color photography, and historical black-and-white images, Railroads of Colorado invites you on a journey from the railroad's humble and hard-won beginnings to its status as a symbol of our past. Railroads of Colorado also includes ideas for exploring Colorado's railways; both the ghosts of long-gone trains that haunt the mountains and the preserved trains whose whistles still echo off those granite peaks. It also contains other helpful information--such as a map showing the routes of more than 30 Colorado rail lines and a "railroad directory," which lists the contact information for 13 operating passenger trains and trolleys.Explores the fascination these improbable railways inspire, providing the history of these unique railroads, the engineering that paved their way into the mountains, and the men who built and ran them.

Book Summit County s Narrow Gauge Railroads

Download or read book Summit County s Narrow Gauge Railroads written by Sandra F. Mather Ph.D. and Bob Schoppe and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2016 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Summit County's Narrow-Gauge Railroads tells the story of the two railroads that fought for dominance in Summit County, Colorado, during the late 1800s and early 1900s: the Denver, South Park & Pacific and the Denver & Rio Grande. The two railroads developed an intense rivalry as they sought to monopolize the county's economic potential. Altitude, heavy winter snow, and rugged mountainous terrain combined to provide a unique set of challenges to company management as well as to the crews as they battled to lay the tracks and provide much-needed rail service to the residents and businesses of the county. Intimately tied to the mining economy, the fortunes of the railroads plummeted when the mining economy collapsed. Although poorly financed and poorly built, the railroads changed the living conditions for county residents. Without the railroads bringing the necessary equipment and lumber, nine huge gold-dredging boats would not have scoured the county's major waterways between 1898 and 1942"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once there was an endless redwood wilderness, populated by only the hardiest of people. Then, the sudden blast of a steam whistle echoed across the canyons and the valleys-the iron horse had arrived in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Driven by the need to transport materials like lumber and lime to the rest of the world, the railroad brought people seeking out new ways of living, from the remote outposts along Bean and Zayante Creeks to the bustling towns of Los Gatos and Santa Cruz. Bridges and tunnels marked the landscape, and each new station, siding and spur signaled activity: businesses, settlements, and vacation spots. Summer resorts in the mountains evolved into sprawling residential communities which formed the backbone of the towns of the San Lorenzo Valley today. Much of the history of the locations along the route has since been forgotten. This is their story. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The making of America “The Fighting Meekers-of Northfield, New Jersey enlisted in the American Army at the age of 70 and fought in the American Revolution in the same company as his 9 sons-2 sons-in-laws and 1 grandson”. Pioneer Women’s Journey West, while walking most all children and women, would pick up dried buffalo chips, as that was the fuel for their night and morning fires. When stopped for the night the wagons would form a circle or large “V” shape, thus protecting the animals and people, and it made it easy for the look outs to watch for intruders, Indians, road agents, buffalo, coyotes, bears, and such. Indians were always trying to stampede or steal their livestock. Most all wagons used tents set up on the sides of their wagons for shelter and sleeping, some attached others freestanding, unlike portrayed in most all movies, as most all immigrants had their wagons packed with the necessities, needed for settling in their new homes in the frontier. So, who really settled the west? It took both hardy men and women to do so, but in my humble opinion the women had it the hardest and endured their load willingly. 76 years of events in my grandfather’s life “September 13, 1916– Mary, a circus elephant is hung in the town of Erwin, Tennessee for killing her handler, Walter “Red” Eldridge.” How the hell do you hang an elephant???? Cattle Drives “Charles Goodnight is credited for inventing and using the first chuck wagon. His cooks name Bose Ikard is credited for the son-of-a-gun-stew. There are many recipes for this stew as it became rather famous not only to the hundreds of chuck wagon cooks on the various cattle trails but also the wagon trains used it several times a month in their crossing the vast plains Diaries of the wagon trains west “Elizabeth K. Bedwell, 1852 Diary of the Oregon Trail (As written) May 29th traveled 20 miles 8 miles from the river Elk Horn brought us to the raging Platte ( you must not water there but keep on until you come to the first byo where you must gather wood for the night and morning and it would be well to haul water too ) 12 miles farther we camped in sight of Platte river on a byo plenty of grass and water south of the road”
