Book excerpt: One hundred pounds of trade goods was the price paid to the Lenape Indians in 1681 for the land where Bound Brook now stands. The town slowly took shape and by the time of the Revolutionary War, it had grown to 35 families. Toll roads, railroads, canals, industry, and commerce all began to evolve in Bound Brook which by 1891, had an established town government, as well as a swelling population and economy. Along with this tremendous growth, a library, a hospital, schools, churches, and hundreds of homes were built to accommodate the ever-increasing number of residents. Sadly, however, natural disaster tended to disrupt what was normally a prosperous but quiet life in Bound Brook. When the Raritan River flooded nearly every year, it caused severe damage to the center of town. In 1881, a disastrous fire destroyed all the buildings in one Main Street block. In 1896, flooding caused the lime at the L.D. Cook lumberyard to ignite by spontaneous combustion. Fortunately, after each disaster Bound Brook survived and rebuilt, emerging stronger and more united. Its history, people, and spirit have made Bound Brook one of the best places to live in New Jersey and have made Bound Brook an inspiring and unforgettable book. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bound Brook, the Place to Dwell In the first place Bound Brook is an old town. It was settled in 1683. More than two hundred years ago the Sheriff of New York City had his farm on the Raritan River and his coun try house stood upon the site now occupied by Mr. George La Monte whose beautiful home with its spacious lawns and garden is one of the most attractive places in the State. It presents more the air of a Virginia estate than of a suburban home, yet it is so near to New York that for more than two centuries it has given rest and comfort to its various owners whose business lives have been spent in the metropolis. The La Tourette House, a view of which adorns this book as the frontispiece, is another of the old Bound Brook houses. This house was the headquarters of Baron Steuben during the Revolutionary War and is one of the most interesting and best preserved of the Colonial houses still in existence. The old Boise house on the Raritan River is a quaint specimen of Dutch architecture. The family bought the land from the Indians and has continued in uninterrupted posses sion ever since. The old Fisher Tavern in the western end of the town is another one of the Revolutionary buildings and has been visited by many antiquarians from all over the country. These places are only mentioned to show the unusual historic interest which attaches itself to Bound Brook. This is not the time to recall the Revolutionary history of this region but every inch is historic ground. Washington twiceencamped with his army on the hillside just north of the town and'the Revolutionary records contain many important letters written by him while here. The site occupied by the Revolution ary Army was purchased a few years ago by one of Bound Brook's patriotic citizens and deeded by him to the \/vashington Camp Ground Association, and here on each Fourth of July patriotic exercises are held which are largely attended by people from all the surrounding country. Time and space will not per mit further reference to the past, especially as this article is prepared for the present and for the future. Book Readington Township

    Book Details:
  • Author :
  • Publisher : Arcadia Publishing
  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN : 9780738556796
  • Pages : 132 pages

Download or read book Readington Township written by and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Readington Township was created by royal charter on July 15, 1730, as Readings or Readings Town. The township consists of 48 square miles and is the largest in Hunterdon County. The early settlement patterns of the Dutch, English, and Germans, who came to farm the rich soil of the Raritan Valley during the 18th century, established the foundation of the villages and hamlets of the township. During the 19th century, the development of railroad lines in the region created additional villages and helped to bring the township's produce to larger markets. By the latter part of the 20th century, most of Readington's inhabitants were employed in diverse industries throughout central New Jersey, and the automobile made travel beyond the villages routine. Like the generations of residents before them, today's residents remain closely connected to their village communities, and a significant portion of the township's land continues to be devoted to agriculture.
