Book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions

Download or read book Micellar Solutions and Microemulsions written by Sow-Hsin Chen and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decade there has been a renewed interest in research on supramolecular assemblies in solutions, such as micelles and microemulsions, not only because of their extensive applications in industries dealing with catalysts, detergency, biotechnology, and enhanced oil recovery, but also due to the development of new and more powerful experimental and theoretical tools for probing the microscopic behavior of these systems. Prominent among the array of the newly available experimental techniques are photon correlation spectroscopy, small-angle neutron and X-ray scattering, and neutron spin-echo and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. On the theoretical side, the traditionally emphasized thermodynamic approach to the study of the phase behavior of self-assembled systems in solutions is gradually being replaced by statistical mechanical studies of semi-micro scopic and microscopic models of the assemblies. Since the statistical mechanical approach demands as its starting point the microscopic struc tural information of the self-assembled system, the experimental determina tion of the structures of micelles and microemulsions becomes of paramount interest. In this regard the scattering techniques mentioned above have played an important role in recent years and will continue to do so in the future. In applying the scattering techniques to the supramolecular species in solution, one cannot often regard the solution to be ideal. This is because the inter-aggregate interaction is often long-ranged since it is coulombic in nature and the interparticle correlations are thus appreciable.

Book Microemulsions Structure and Dynamics

Download or read book Microemulsions Structure and Dynamics written by Friberg and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-01-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the microemulsion phenomenon in a systematic manner and not only provides an up-to-date introduction to this topic but aslo serves as the basis for further development in the area. The progress of microemulsion research has taken place in well-defined stages. The introduction period was founded on Schulman‘s original discovery and was, as expected, focused on the interfacial free energy. Because Schulman obtained his microemulsions from a macroemulsion by the addition of a cosurfactant. The present stage is characterized by an extensively enhanced knowledge about structure and dynamics in these systems. This has led to the realization that the structure of the microemulsions is related both to solutions with critical behaviour and long range order structures, the lyotropic liquid crystals. These two aspects have been elucidated independently by the French groups and by the Lund Spectroscopy group.

Download or read book Micellization Solubilization and Microemulsions written by K. Mittal and published by Springer. This book was released on 1977-06 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume and its companion Volume 2 chronicle the proceed ings of the International Symposium on Micellization, Solubiliza tion, and t1icroemulsions held under the auspices of the Northeast Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Albany, New York, August 8-11, 1976. The technical program consisted of 48 papers by 91 authors from twelve countries. The program was divided into six sessions, and Dr. Hartley delivered the Concluding Remarks. Subsequently, six more papers were contributed for the proceedings volumes with the result that these volumes contain 51 papers (three papers are not included for certain reasons) and are divided into seven parts. The first three parts are embodied in Volume 1 and the remaining four parts constitute Volume 2; each part is followed by a Discussion Section. Dr. Hartley's Concluding Remarks are in cluded in both volumes . . When the idea of arranging a symposium on micelles was broached to me, I accepted it without an iota of hesitation. I had two op tions: either to make it a one- or two-sessions symposium, or bring together the global community actively carrying out research in this area. I opted for the latter as the subject was very timely and I knew that it would elicit very enthusiastic response. In order to broaden the scope of the symposium, I suggested that the theme of the symposium should be Micellization. Solubilization and Microemulsions.

Book Non Ionic Binary Surfactant Systems and Microemulsions as Model Systems for Thermal Diffusion Studies

Download or read book Non Ionic Binary Surfactant Systems and Microemulsions as Model Systems for Thermal Diffusion Studies written by Sascha Datta and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-12-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thermal diffusion (or the Soret effect) describes the diffusion of matter in the presence of a temperature gradient. Although this process is studied and applied since more than 100 years the underlying molecular mechanism in liquids is still far from being understood. Colloidal dispersions are versatile model systems to study the thermal diffusion behavior of large particles in a solvent. However, the synthesis of colloidal particles with identical morphology is a complex task. On the other hand aqueous surfactant solutions and microemulsions are promising systems to study the Soret effect. Compared to colloidal particles the aggregates form spontaneously and do not require any additional stabilisation. Furthermore the radius and the shape of the diffusing aggregates, as well as their interfacial tension can be systematically adjusted via the variation of the composition and temperature. In order to address some important aspects of the thermal diffusion behavior three different types of self-assembled surfactant systems were formulated and systematically studied: (i) At first the role of the ionic dye Basantol® Yellow 215, which causes an unexpected two-mode signal in the classical Thermal Diffusion Forced Rayleigh Scattering (TDFRS) experiment [Ning et al. Progr Colloid Polym Sci (2006) 133: 111–115], is examined using the system H2O – C12E6. Systematic phase behavior studies and small angle neutron scattering experiments (SANS) proved that the dye is incorporated into the aggregates like an ionic co-surfactant, influencing not only the thermal diffusion behavior but also the overall properties of the systems. These results strongly suggest that one should refrain from the use of surface-active dyes in TDFRS experiments on self-assembled systems. (ii) To study the dependence of the Soret coefficient ST on the radius of the aggregates and the slope of the interfacial tension, both being controversially discussed in the literature, different microemulsions of the type H2O – C12E5 –n-alkane were formulated that allow for an isothermal study of these dependencies. Correlating the results of the systematic SANS and interfacial tension measurements with the Soret coefficient ST it was found that within the measurement range ST depends almost linearly on the droplet radius, the slope of the interfacial tension as well as on the product of both quantities. (iii) In the last part systematic surface tension and TDFRS measurements were performed in binary aqueous n-alkyl glucoside (CiGj) solutions to study the thermal diffusion behavior around the critical micelle concentration (cmc). The obtained results clearly show that the Soret coefficient exhibits an abrupt change at the cmc. To sum up, this work shows that aqueous surfactant systems and microemulsions are eminently suited to elucidate some of the underlying molecular mechanism of the Soret effect.

Book Physics of Amphiphilic Layers

Download or read book Physics of Amphiphilic Layers written by Jacques Meunier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphiphilic layers play essential roles in the behaviour of a great variety of disperse systems such as micelles, microemulsions and vesicles. They can also exist as isolated mono- or bilayers, or constitute extended liquid crystalline structures. Although the properties of these different systems may at first sight seem unrelated, theoretical interpretations of them depend on several common concepts. This was the reason for bringing together scientists working in this area for the International Winter School on the Physics of Amphiphilic Layers, which was held at Les Houches, 10-18 February, 1987. The topics treated in the proceedings volume are mono- and bilayers, interactive forces between layers (with special emphasis on steric forces), ordered structures (in particular swollen lamellar phases and defects), vesicles, micelles (including polymer-like systems), microemulsions (especially random bicontinuous structures) and porous media. The importance of thermal fluctuations in the amphiphilic layers is stressed. Recent results are presented and literature references allow readers not familiar with the subject to find any background information they require.
