Book A Guide to the Technical Evaluation of Environmental Data

Download or read book A Guide to the Technical Evaluation of Environmental Data written by Nic Korte and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-05-10 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Guide for the Technical Evaluation of Environmental Data presents the insight you need for evaluating analytical data obtained from environmental samples. Often, analyses performed on a few samples can lead to misplaced concern on the wrong analytes. For example, a geologist would know which trace metals might be naturally present in the source rock underlying a site, but not know which metals should be expected because of tire wear or which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons would be present because of a nearby powerplant. This book provides you with references to support decision making regarding selection of contaminants.

Book Palaeoclimatology and Palaeoceanography from Laminated Sediments

Download or read book Palaeoclimatology and Palaeoceanography from Laminated Sediments written by Alan E. S. Kemp and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 1996 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The magnitude and causes of decadal to century-scale changes in climate are major issues of global concern. The separation of anthropogenically driven change from natural 'baseline' variability within the atmosphere/ocean system is a prerequisite to identifying human impact on global climate. An understanding of past climate variability is therefore a key to predicting future climate change. The sedimentary record of the oceans, seas and lakes is produced by a series of depositional events that occur on seasonal timescales but can rarely be resolved due to mixing of the sediment by bottomdwelling organisms. Where they are preserved, laminated sediments act like tree rings to record these seasonal-scale processes, such as plankton blooms and floods, and provide a uniquely high-resolution record of environmental change. In addition, annually laminated or 'varved' sediment sequences act as geochronometers against which other timescales can be tested. Laminated sediments may therefore be used to develop records of interannual and decadal-scale variability which serve to test models of climate change. The authors cover a range of topics that include strategies for study and techniques of analysis. A series of case studies, dealing with a variety of lacustrine and marine records, illustrates the wide potential of laminated sediments as palaeoclimatic and palaeoceanographic indicators.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Detecting Ecological Impacts

Download or read book Detecting Ecological Impacts written by Russell J. Schmitt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-01-25 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detecting Ecological Impacts: Concepts and Applications in Coastal Habitats focuses on crucial aspects of detecting local and regional impacts that result from human activities. Detection and characterization of ecological impacts require scientific approaches that can reliably separate the effects of a specific anthropogenic activity from those of other processes. This fundamental goal is both technically and operationally challenging. Detecting Ecological Impacts is devoted to the conceptual and technical underpinnings that allow for reliable estimates of ecological effects caused by human activities. An international team of scientists focuses on the development and application of scientific tools appropriate for estimating the magnitude and spatial extent of ecological impacts. The contributors also evaluate our current ability to forecast impacts. Some of the scientific, legal, and administrative constraints that impede these critical tasks also are highlighted. Coastal marine habitats are emphasized, but the lessons and insights have general application to all ecological systems.

Book Mineralogy of Hemipelagic Basin Sediments California Continental Borderland

Download or read book Mineralogy of Hemipelagic Basin Sediments California Continental Borderland written by Peter Fleischer and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minerals in Holocene and late Pleistocene basin sediments of the northern California Continental Borderland are derived from local sources, and in minor amounts from wind- and current-borne sediment. Source, sea level fluctuations, differential settling, and sedimentation by floods control the distribution of the mineralogy. River-sediment mineralogy can be divided into northern sedimentary, central igneous-metamorphic, and southern batholithic suites. Analysis of cores reveal mineralogic variations that are largely contolled by sea-level fluctuations. Numerous well-sorted gray silt layers in Santa Barbara Basin appear to be flood-deposits that formed after unusually heavy storms, such as occurred in 1969. (Author).

Book Ecology of the Southern California Bight

Download or read book Ecology of the Southern California Bight written by Murray D. Dailey and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 952 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a benchmark study of one significant stretch of the Pacific Ocean, the Southern California Bight. Extending from Point Conception to the Mexican border and out to the 200-mile limit, these waters have never before been investigated in such detail, from so many points of view, by such an eminent group of scientists. The twenty-five expert contributors summarize everything known about the physical, chemical, geological, and biological characteristics of the area in individual chapters; the volume concludes with a synthesis of the information presented. In addition, chapters are devoted to the influence of humans on the marine environment and to the various laws and governmental agencies concerned with protecting it. Because Southern California is so heavily populated and because the ocean is a major recreational area for its people, the information in this unique volume will be invaluable for the region's planners and decisionmakers as well as for all those who study the globe's marine resources and ecology.

Book From the Mountains to the Abyss

Download or read book From the Mountains to the Abyss written by Kathleen M. Marsaglia and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This SEPM/PS-SEPM volume celebrates the life and scientific achievements of Donn S. Gorsline focusing on the California Continental Borderland, a region where Donn worked extensively. The 18 papers in this volume span offshore Borderland basin settings and exposures in onshore, inner Borderland regions affected by tectonic uplift. They touch on aspects of sedimentation in the modern source-to-sink sedimentary systems, encompassing some world-class Miocene to Pleistocene outcrops and the subsurface distribution of submarine fan and hemipelagic facies, as well as the structural evolution of the Borderland basins and their associated magmatic components. The broad topics covered will be of interest to a spectrum of geologists and geophysicists interested in transtensional to transpressional basin settings, the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of southern California, models of deep-marine to coastal depositional systems, as well as regional hydrocarbon exploration. Additionally, the geologic history and structure of the California Continental Borderland are connected with the distribution of modern seafloor life and marine ecosystems. This volume serves as a benchmark of current research in the region with the aim of spurring future exploration and study.

Book Organic Phosphorus in Marine Sediments

Download or read book Organic Phosphorus in Marine Sediments written by Kirsten Lynn Laarkamp and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phosphorus, an essential nutrient, is removed from the oceans only through burial with marine sediments. Organic phosphorus (Porg) constitutes an important fraction (ca. 25%) of total-P in marine sediments. However, given the inherent lability of primary Porg biochemicals, it is a puzzle that any Porg is preserved in marine sediments. The goal of this thesis was to address this apparent paradox by linking bulk and molecular-level Porg information. A newly-developed sequential extraction method, which isolates sedimentary Porg reservoirs based on solubility, was used in concert with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P-NMR) to quantify Porg functional group concentrations. The coupled extraction/31P-NMR method was applied to three sediment cores from the Santa Barbara Basin, and the first-ever high-resolution depth profiles of molecular-level Porg distribution during diagenesis were generated. These depth profiles were used to consider regulation of Porg distribution by biomass abundance, chemical structure, and physical protection mechanisms. Biomass cannot account for more than a few percent of sedimentary Porg. No evidence for direct structural control on remineralization of Porg was found. Instead, sorptive protection appears to be an important mechanism for Porg preservation, and structure may act as a secondary control due to preferential sorption of specific Porg compound classes.
