Book excerpt: Ten major rivers of the southeastern United States have been sampled monthly over a year period for copper and for six months for nickel and zinc. One year's data has also been obtained for mercury and arsenic. The locations of the Atlantic Ocean continental shelf surface water samples collected during the past year are shown. During the same cruises atmospheric samples were also collected. The data indicate that: the most important input mechanism for trace elements to the continental shelf is intrusions with the possible exception of mercury which has an equally important input via the atmosphere; the residence times of all the trace elements studied in continental shelf waters are similar (about 0.26 yr) but different from that of water (0.37 yr); a portion of trace elements transported to the shelf by rivers may be lost by incorporation onto particles that are swept off the shelf or deposited on the bottom; and trace elements are apparently regenerated at depth in the Gulf Stream and off shelter waters, and increased levels may be correlated with nutrient concentrations. A list is included of published papers that report the results in detail.

A smaller effort has been concerned with preliminary geochemical studies of uranium-thorium natural decay series radionuclides and with improvement, calibration, and expansion of our trace element laboratory procedures.

Objectives were to determine the role of frontal zones in the nearshore region on trace element transport and dispersion, to develop a better understanding of intrusion source water trace element characteristics, to continue to quantify trace element inputs to the South Atlantic Bight, and to elucidate the role of particulate matter in the geochemistry of trace elements in the South Atlantic Bight. It was found that the concentration of both particulate and total trace metals decreases sharply across the nearshore front, and rapidly approaches values found in oligotrophic open ocean surface waters. Compositional analysis of the particulate phase when combined with total metal analysis suggests that Cu may preferentially associate with particulate organic matter, even in the clay-mineral-rich, turbid nearshore zone. 5 figures, 10 tables.
