Los primeros datos sobre productividad laboral se remontan a principios del siglo xx aunque durante décadas sólo interesó mayoritariamente a economistas laborales. A partir de la década de los 70 empezó a tenerse en cuenta desde el punto de vista del desarrollo de economías nacionales y su impacto en tres niveles: país, empresa e individuo. Si preguntamos a algún paisano de la calle sobre este término seguramente no será muy conciso al tratar de explicarlo. «Algo relacionado con la economía…», «Lo bien que va una fábrica, ¿no?», «¿Esto no tendrá que ver con algún programa de cocina de esos en los que se le ponen pruebas a la gente?». Si lo hacemos a algún directivo seguro que afinarán un poco más. «Lo que se genera en función de lo que podría ser generado», «Un índice para comparar rendimientos en el ámbito industrial», «Lo que hay que mejorar para que tengas bonus…». Sí, pero no, pero sí. De manera general, la productividad es el ratio generado por las entradas y las salidas en un proceso productivo según Keindrich (1961). Pero no es la única definición, ni mucho menos. También se define así la relación entre los resultados y el tiempo que se tarda en obtenerlos. Desde el punto de vista ingenieril la productividad viene expresada en términos de eficiencia de la máquina tal y como apuntan Norman y Bahiri (1972), y según han ido evolucionando las empresas, se han ido añadiendo factores que inciden en el resultado. Esta evolución viene pilotada por el papel de las personas en la misma. La preponderancia que han ido obteniendo en el rendimiento de las organizaciones es innegable y ya hay muchas empresas que dependen mayoritariamente de los cerebros que en ellas trabajan más que de las máquinas que se utilizan. Para muestra un botón: las adquisiciones de empresas de consultoría, de bufetes de abogados o de sociedades de banca de inversión. ¿Qué ocurriría si un mes después de la compra se fuesen los principales Socios, Directores y Gerentes con sus respectivos equipos a la competencia o a montar su propia aventura profesional? La respuesta es sencilla: tendrías una marca y un montón de gente con necesidad de liderazgo y de negocio con el que trabajar. Nada más. El valor, volatilizado. Lo que antes era sencillo de medir, al trasladarlo a las personas se convierte en una serie no definida de ecuaciones multivariable con dependencias múltiples, complejas e indefinidas en la mayoría de los casos. ¿Cuáles son los factores que afectan a la productividad? Si revisamos la bibliografía al respecto nos encontramos con que Fernández, Avella y Fernández (2003) indican que existen factores sujetos al control de la dirección de la empresa y otros no, lo cual no aclara mucho la situación. Bain (1985) apuntaba las reglamentaciones gubernamentales y el tamaño y madurez de las organizaciones. Sumanth (1990) incluía la inversión, la relación capital/trabajo, la mezcla de la fuerza de trabajo, la ética del trabajo, el temor de los empleados a perder su empleo, la influencia sindical y la administración. Schroeder (1994) hace mención a cinco factores que comprenden factores externos, de capacidad e inventario, de producto, de proceso, de fuerza de trabajo y de calidad. Prokopenko (1999) sostiene la influencia de, entre otros, la calidad de la fuerza laboral, el mejoramiento de los sistemas, la calidad de la política económica del gobierno, la administración pública, la infraestructura social y de los negocios. Acevedo (2004) incluye las habilidades de los trabajadores, inteligencia y creatividad de los trabajadores, los sistemas de información, el estilo de supervisión, la estructura organizativa y la calidad de la gestión política. Ramírez (2005) añade la ergonomía como un nuevo factor. Y por no seguir enumerando y enumerando, Mosley, León y Pietri (2005) manifiestan que en las organizaciones la productividad se ve afectada por cuatro grupos de factores que son la gerencia, el gobierno, los trabajadores y los sindicatos. De momento, nos quedamos con una definición de Velásquez, Núñez y Rodríguez (2010) en la que definen la productividad como la relación integral entre personas, tecnología y dinero con el fin de generar bienes y servicios que sean beneficiosos para todos los actores involucrados: empresa, trabajadores, clientes y sociedad. Permite a las organizaciones ser más competitivas, reducir sus costes de producción y aumentar su rentabilidad, lo cual coadyuva a un crecimiento sostenido en el mercado nacional e internacional al enfrentarse con mayor éxito los retos de la globalización. De ahí a que pueda ser medida hay todo un mundo. Y yo añadiría que la productividad es un reto. Probablemente y como decía Peter Drucker (1999) ya a finales del siglo pasado «la productividad del trabajador del conocimiento es el mayor reto de gestión del siglo xxi y en los países desarrollados, su primer requerimiento de supervivencia». Por lo tanto, en algunos casos es EL reto. El reto porque se realiza la analogía entre el desarrollo del mundo moderno sobrevenido por el incremento de productividad en las máquinas y mundo industrial del siglo xx con el que debe producirse con las personas y el mundo del conocimiento de este siglo. Una teoría indica que hasta que no seamos capaces de identificar correctamente los factores que en ella influyen no podremos medirlos, compararlos y mejorarlos.
