Book excerpt: Ancient religions are definitely complex systems of gods, which resist our understanding. Divine names provide fundamental keys to gain access to the multiples ways gods were conceived, characterized, and organized. Among the names given to the gods many of them refer to spaces: cities, landscapes, sanctuaries, houses, cosmic elements. They reflect mental maps which need to be explored in order to gain new knowledge on both the structure of the pantheons and the human agency in the cultic dimension. By considering the intersection between naming and mapping, this book opens up new perspectives on how tradition and innovation, appropriation and creation play a role in the making of polytheistic and monotheistic religions. Far from being confined to sanctuaries, in fact, gods dwell in human environments in multiple ways. They move into imaginary spaces and explore the cosmos. By proposing a new and interdiciplinary angle of approach, which involves texts, images, spatial and archeaeological data, this book sheds light on ritual practices and representations of gods in the whole Mediterranean, from Italy to Mesopotamia, from Greece to North Africa and Egypt. Book excerpt: Considering the ubiquity of rhetorical training in antiquity, the volume starts from the premise that every first-person statement in ancient literature is in some way rhetorically modelled and aesthetically shaped. Focusing on different types of Greek and Latin literature, poetry and prose, from the Archaic Age to Late Antiquity, the contributions analyse the use and modelling of gender-specific elements in different types of first-person speech, be it that the speaker is (represented as) the author of a work, be it that they feature as characters in the work, narrating their own story or that of others. In doing so, they do not only offer new insights into the rhetorical strategies and literary techniques used to construct a gendered ‘I’ in ancient literature. They also address the form and function of first-person discourse in classical literature in general, touching on fields of research that have increasingly come into focus in recent years, such as authorship studies, studies concerning the ancient notion(s) of the literary persona, as well as a historical narratology that discusses concepts such as the narrator or the literary character in ancient literary theory and practice.

During the Early Byzantine period Platonism significantly contributed to the development of Christian doctrines and, paradoxically, remained a rival world view that was perceived by many Christian thinkers as a serious threat to their own intellectual identity. This problematic relationship was to become even more complex during the following centuries. Byzantine authors made numerous attempts to harmonize Neoplatonic doctrines with Christianity as well as to criticize, refute and even condemn them. Da essi vengono generati e poi venerati uomini "speciali", ardimentosi, valorosi, simboli di coraggio, astuzia, spirito guerriero, bellezza e forza fisica, rappresentanti di un'ideale, quello tutto maschio proprio del popolo greco, che condensa in sè le aspirazioni di ogni uomo dell'epoca: gli Eroi, semi-dei, amati dagli uomini e dalle donne, dagli dei e delle dee, che eleggevano e proteggevano, a turno, i loro "preferiti"; gli eroi che si ergevano, soli, a protezione, a difesa della conservazione della comunità umana, specie dei suoi componenti più esposti a rischi mortali, come i naviganti e i combattenti. Gli eroi, che pure non mancano nei racconti leggendari di molte altre culture, ma che in quella greca assumono una valenza che non è solo apologetica, nè circostanziale. Perchè "il mito greco è solo greco". Le numerose interpretazioni romane non ingannino, ne sono copia, appaiono edulcorate, rivestite di una verosimiglianza che sembra esaltarne "colori, gesti, e atteggiamenti". Ma della grecità hanno perso la tipicità più autentica, quella che solo quelle popolazioni e quelle terre potevano partorire. Perciò, anche se lo faremo molto incompiutamente, perchè non è questo l'intento della nostra breve narrazione, per chi volesse approcciarsi ad uno studio severo della religione greca, per ben conoscere i miti che ne sono alla base, occorre tralasciare le fonti che gli studiosi definiscono "greco-romane", ma considerare tali solo quelle, propriamente elleniche, rinvenibili tra l'VIII ed il IV secolo avanti Cristo. Qui, e ci scusiamo per le inevitabili incompiutezze, ci rivolgiamo invece a chi, studente o semplice curioso affascinato, come noi, dall'incredibile epopea di dei ed eroi di un'epoca irripetibile, vuole avvicinarsi, in minima parte, alle tantissime narrazioni, leggende e storie fantastiche che hanno reso unica al mondo, sempre attuale ed immortale, la grande storia della mitologia greca.

Book excerpt: During the First World War, mass media achieved an enormous and continuously growing importance in all belligerent countries. Newspaper, illustrated magazines, comics, pamphlets, and instant books, fi ctional works, photography, and the new-born “theater of imagery”, the cinema, were crucial in order to create a heroic vision of the events, to mobilize and maintain the consensus on the war. But their role was pivotal also in creating the image of the war’s end and fi nally, together with a widespread, new literary genre, the war memoirs, to shape the collective memory of the confl ict for the next generations. Even before November 1918, the media raised high expectations for a multifaceted peace: a new global order, the beginning of a peaceful era, the occasion for a regenerating apocalypse. Likewise, in the following decades, particularly war literature and cinema were pivotal to reverse the icon of the Great War as an epic crusade and a glorious chapter of the national history and to create the hegemonic image of a senseless carnage. The Mediatization of War and Peace focalizes on the central role played by mass media in the tortuous transition to the post-war period as well as on the profound disenchantment generated by their prophesies.
