This research looks to provide insight from mothers and their experiences with "green" toys and navigating consumer sustainability as part of their family labor. Through 8 semi-structured interviews, mothers discuss their toy consumption patterns, relationship with sustainable products, and the pressures of motherhood. Interviews reveal how the hierarchy of environmental consumption interacts with the morality of intensive mothering ideology, and the morality of toy purchasing to inform choices. Qualitative analysis shows an awareness of wastefulness, chemical content of products around children's products, and the prevalence of secondhand toys. This thesis draws on research concerning intensive mothering ideology and the individualization of environmental risk using precautionary consumption and inverted quarantine.
