Book The Library as Playground

Download or read book The Library as Playground written by Dale Leorke and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-04-13 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digital and analog games have long served modern public libraries as educational tools and as drawcards for new patrons – from dedicated gaming zones and children’s spaces to Minecraft gaming days, makerspaces, and virtual reality collections. Much has been written about the role of games and play in libraries’ programming and collections. But their wider role in transforming libraries as public institutions remains unexplored. In this book, the authors draw on ethnographic research to provide a rich portrait of the intersection between games, play, and public libraries. They look at how games and play are increasingly spilling out of designated zones within libraries and beyond their walls, as part of a broader reconfiguration and “reimagining” of libraries in the digital era. The library’s association with play has historically been understood through its classification as a “third place”: somewhere to relax, socialise and experiment outside of the utilitarian demands of work and home. But far from just offering patrons an opportunity for detached leisure, this book illustrates how libraries are connecting games and play to policies agendas around their municipality’s economic and cultural development. Attending to the institutionalisation of play, the book sheds new light both on the contradictions at the heart of play as a theoretical concept, and what libraries are in contemporary public life.

Book Audio Recorders to Zucchini Seeds

Download or read book Audio Recorders to Zucchini Seeds written by Mark Robison and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-05-30 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This exploration of the range of options for a "library of things" collection demonstrates what has been implemented successfully and offers practical insights regarding these nontraditional projects, from the development of concepts to the everyday realities of maintaining these collections. What services libraries provide and how they function in their communities is constantly being reconsidered and redefined. One example of this is the trend of experimenting with building circulating collections of nonliterary "things"—such as tools, seeds, cooking equipment, bicycles, household machinery, and educational materials—by drawing on traditional library functions and strengths of acquisition, organization, and circulation. Audio Recorders to Zucchini Seeds: Building a Library of Things enables you to consider the feasibility of creating a specific type of "thing" collection in your library and get practical advice about the processes necessary to successfully launch and maintain it, from planning and funding to circulation, promotion, and upkeep. This contributed volume provides a survey of "library of things" projects within the United States, from both public and academic libraries, offering real-world lessons learned from these early experiments with nontraditional collections. The authors offer practical insights from their projects, from the development of their initial ideas to the everyday realities of maintaining and circulating these collections, including cataloging, space needs, safety concerns, staff training, circulation, marketing, and assessment. The contributed chapters are organized thematically, covering "things" collections that encompass a wide variety of objects first, followed by collections with a community-building focus (seeds, recreation, tools) and those that serve an educational purpose, such as curriculum centers, children's toys, or collections that support a university curriculum. The last section addresses collections that support media production.

Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this study explores the increased public concern with policies of ‘community care’ and their effects on informal carers, at that time. It looks at the widespread evidence that one particular group of informal carers- parents looking after their severely disabled child- lack information, advice and a co-ordinated pattern of supporting services. The author, who carried out research on disabled children and their families for a number of years, describes in detail a low-cost experimental project in which specialist social workers set out to remedy these shortcomings. Drawing on the results of this particular study, the author argues strongly for widespread assignment of ‘key’ social workers to this and other groups of informal carers. Despite being written in the mid-1980s, this book discusses topic that will still be of interest and use today.

Book Born Too Early

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jonna Jepsen
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-04-24
  • ISBN : 0429911513
  • Pages : 182 pages

Download or read book Born Too Early written by Jonna Jepsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-24 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Premature children suffering consequences of their early birth do not grow out of them, and new difficulties may appear as they mature. The sum of negative influences from the time in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, eventual problems with interaction, and later a defective or delayed development, can cause continuous problems for premature children. These children can however be protected if we initiate the necessary support. An early effort can prevent the typical consequences of pre-term birth, so that the children will have quite a normal childhood. If the minor difficulties are identified, it is possible to take care of them before they develop into huge problems, and that is just the purpose of this book: to give parents, and professionals close to the child, a possibility to prevent, repair, and rebuild. Born Too Early does not deal with the more usual handicaps but exclusively with the less visible consequences of pre-term birth, which are rarely diagnosed.
