Book excerpt: This book, containing more than 400 photos and illustrations, provides practical guidelines for the cosmetic use of botulinum toxin type A (BTA) in Asians. The differences in BTA treatment of Asians and Caucasians with respect to applicable dose, injection methods, anatomic significance, and indications are clearly described. It is explained how the optimal dose and injection sites for the treatment of wrinkles differ from the guidelines advocated in North America and Europe. Detailed consideration is given to the rapidly expanding role that BTA treatment is playing in facial and body contouring based on leveraging the mechanism of disuse muscle atrophy. Examples that are particularly relevant in Asians include treatment of hypertrophy of the masseter and temporalis muscles and calf muscle reduction. Further chapters are devoted to the use of BTA in the treatment of hyperhidrosis and the intradermal injection of BTA. The book will be an excellent resource for all dermatologists, plastic surgeons, cosmetic Physicians, and other clinicians who employ BTA in Asian patients.

Book Botulinum Toxin Treatment

Download or read book Botulinum Toxin Treatment written by Bahman Jabbari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Very few therapeutic agents in clinical medicine have found indication for so many clinical conditions, and in such a short time as did botulinum neurotoxins (Botox and others). Chronic migraine, bladder dysfunction , dystonia, hemifacial spasm , blepharospasm , drooling, excessive sweating and spasticity are all approved by FDA and many other indications are in the near horizon . The aesthetic/cosmetic use of Botox and other BoNTs already has a huge market worldwide. Stroke, Multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral palsy as well as brain and spinal injury are among clinical conditions in which some of patients’ major symptoms can respond to botulinum toxin therapy Several books have been written on the subject of Botox and other neurotoxins for treatment of medical disorders ( including two books by Jabbari both published by Springer 2015 & 2017). However, despite the huge interest and enthusiasm of the public to learn more about Botox and other toxins, there is currently no book in the market on this subject which is specifically designed to inform and educate the public on botulinum toxin therapy. Botulinum Toxin Treatment explains and discusses in simple language the structure and function of botulinum toxin and other neurotoxins as well as the rational for its utility in different disease conditions. Safety, factors affecting efficacy and duration of action, as well as cost and insurance issues are also addressed.

Download or read book Death to Beauty written by Eugene M. Helveston and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s, Dr. Alan Scott sought to selectively weaken eye muscles to treat strabismus (when one or both eyes are misaligned) without surgery. After failed attempts with other agents, Scott developed a method to stabilize the bacteria that causes botulism, culminating in a drug that eventually became known as Botox. In Death to Beauty, Eugene M. Helveston, MD, follows the unlikely story of botulism's 1817 discovery in contaminated German sausages, to its use in military and research facilities, to Scott, an ophthalmologist who aimed to safely use the drug in humans. Scott struggled alone as an unknown in the pharmaceutical industry, searching for clinical trial financing and FDA approval, which he achieved at a fraction of the billions big pharma usually spends to bring a drug to market. Eventually, the company Allergan bought him out, capitalizing on the possibilities for cosmetic uses. Scott's formula was renamed "Botox" and reached annual sales in the billions. After the sale, Scott received no further compensation from Botox sales and remained the same unassuming man. A fascinating walk through the intricate history of how the world's deadliest toxin starting as a treatment for crossed eyes became a routine tool for the cosmetic industry, Death to Beauty will make you rethink success, beauty, and deadly bacteria.

Book Botulinum Toxin in Painful Diseases

Download or read book Botulinum Toxin in Painful Diseases written by Wolfgang H. Jost and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exceptionally successful history of botulinum toxin and its likely future has hardly an equivalent. Initially, it was used in strabismus, blepharospasm and hemifacial spasm, later also in focal dystonia and spasticity and it has been shown to effectively treat wrinkles, hyperhidrosis and a great number of ensuing indications. By treating symptoms or disorders associated with pain, its analgesic effect was first noticed. The efficacy and reasons for this side effect have since been investigated and a number of models explaining the mode of action have been presented. However, even if we know that botulinum toxin undoubtedly helps in certain pain syndromes, there is still much work to do to identify the major ones, define the optimum dose and the preferred site of injection. Indicating current positions and kindling the growing interest in this extraordinary therapeutic agent this book presents a timely overview on pain management with botulinum toxin. Thus, it will be of great interest especially for anesthesiologists and neurologists in their clinical work and medical research.

Book Botulinum and Tetanus Neurotoxins

Download or read book Botulinum and Tetanus Neurotoxins written by B.R. DasGupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three days in Madison have thoroughly modified my view on clostridial neurotoxins. While still realizing the numerous activating, modifying and protective inputs, I cannot judge the meaningfulness of the meeting impartially. Neither may the reader expect a complete summary of all presentations. Collected in this volume, they speak for themselves without requiring an arbiter. Instead I shall write down my very personal opinions as a researcher who has studied clostridial neurotoxins for nearly 25 years. Comparable conferences have been rare during this time. A comprehensive symposium 4 on C. botulinum neurotoxins has been organized at Ft. Detrick. International conferences on tetanus have been held regularly under the auspices of the Wodd Health Organization. One or maximally two days of these meetings have been devoted to tetanus toxin and its actions whereas the sponsor and the majority of the participants have been interested mainly in epidemiology, prevention and treatment of tetanus as a disease (see refs. 5,6). Some aspects of clostridial neurotoxins have been addressed in the context of bacterial toxins, in particular in the biennial European workshops. 1-3,7,8 The Madison meeting differed from the previous ones in three aspects. First, it covered both tetanus and botulinum neurotoxins. The fusion was justified because of their huge similarities in primary structure, in their mode of action and in their cellular targets. Second, the meeting was not limited to toxins but drew some lines on which modern neurobiology might proceed.

This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
