Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Godzilla, a traditional natural monster and representation of cinema’s subgenre of natural attack, also provides a cautionary symbol of the dangerous consequences of mistreating the natural world—monstrous nature on the attack. Horror films such as Godzilla invite an exploration of the complexities of a monstrous nature that humanity both creates and embodies. Robin L. Murray and Joseph K. Heumann demonstrate how the horror film and its offshoots can often be understood in relation to a monstrous nature that has evolved either deliberately or by accident and that generates fear in humanity as both character and audience. This connection between fear and the natural world opens up possibilities for ecocritical readings often missing from research on monstrous nature, the environment, and the horror film. Organized in relation to four recurring environmental themes in films that construct nature as a monster—anthropomorphism, human ecology, evolution, and gendered landscapes—the authors apply ecocritical perspectives to reveal the multiple ways nature is constructed as monstrous or in which the natural world itself constructs monsters. This interdisciplinary approach to film studies fuses cultural, theological, and scientific critiques to explore when and why nature becomes monstrous.

Book Unseen Jungle The Microbes That Secretly Control Our World

This book was released on 2023-05-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively peek into the amazing world of microbes, replete with a kid-pleasing “ick” factor, is chock-full of facts, humor, and fun illustrations. Microbes are everywhere: outside, indoors, on your body, in your body. In fact, only about half of our bodies' cells are human cells—the rest are microbes. Whether helping people digest their food or using mind-control techniques to lure mice into the path of hungry cats (no, really), microbes form an unseen jungle all around us. Through zany facts, hilarious and sometimes disgusting illustrations, and interviews with experts in their fields, aspiring young scientists (or kids who just want to be grossed out) will discover a hidden world in which your health depends on a myriad of microbes, houseflies get zombified by fungi, and termites are saving the planet one fart at a time. With such extras as sidebars, limericks, and even a lesson on how to draw E. coli, this “eww”-worthy treasure trove for kids is an engrossing romp into the microbe drama unfolding where you might least expect it.

Book Make Your Own Damn Movie

Download or read book Make Your Own Damn Movie written by Lloyd Kaufman and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lloyd Kaufman, the writer/producer/director of such cult-classic films as The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, and Tromeo and Juliet, offers a guide to movie-making unlike any other available anywhere. In 25 years, Kaufman, along with partner Michael Herz, has built Troma Studios up from a company struggling to find its voice in a field crowded with competitors to its current--and legendary--status as a lone survivor, a bastion of true cinematic independence, and the world's greatest collection of camp on film. As entertaining and funny as it is informative and insightful, Make Your Own Damn Movie! places Kaufman's radically low-budget, independent-studio style of filmaking directly in the reader's hands. Thus we learn how to: develop and write a knock-out screenplay; raise funding; find locations and cast actors; hire a crew; obtain equipment, permits, and music rights (all for little or no money); make incredible special effects for $0.79 each; charm, schmooze, and network while on the film-festival circuit; and, finally, make a bad actor act so bad it's actually good. From scriptwriting and directing to financing and marketing, this book is brimming with utterly off-the-wall, decidedly maverick, yet consistently proven advice on how to fully develop one's idea for an independent film.

MUM and DAD do their parenting duties but only when they are not bickering themselves over the chocolate brownies. Mum is going to miss her chocolate brownies. So too is Dad! Soot clings to everything; trees die forever. The rainforest is disappearing - the lungs of the Earth are wheezing. This is everybody's environment and everybody's planet. Katty and Jake are on a mission, and the battle is on against the filthy pollutants. With the help of their school science teacher, MISS VIOLET, things were going to change before it was too late. Miss Violet conducts pollution experiments, and they begin a crusade to help the Amazon rainforest and to start their tree planting campaign. Katty is one small girl in a very big world who witnesses deforestation. There are a handful of suspects and a lot more baddies. The rainforest is filled with eerie chitter-chatter whispers. All aboard the journey of discovery, where nothing is as it seems! Everything is burning out of control. Time is running out. Seriously! The trees are burning; the forest is disappearing. A mystery story that is not actually a mystery! Get it? Oh, you defo will get it. Boomerang! is a children's story detailing the adventures of Katty, her brother Jake and their parents as they travel to the Amazon rainforest. Amongst other things, they discover magical trees called the Mystrees, come face to face with a caiman crocodile and meet a talking owl. With these mystical elements, the story has many aspects that are enjoyed in children's stories in the current market. But what is unique here is the way the author delicately, but with conviction, addresses the issues of climate change in a way that children will understand. This is the biggest strength of the story. The writing goes up a gear when the animals, the pollutants and Katty talk about the environmental issues and so it's clear that this is something the author is passionate about. Overall, it's a fun story about family but also about standing up for the environmental issues you believe in.
