Book Fundamentals Of Aquatic Toxicology

Download or read book Fundamentals Of Aquatic Toxicology written by Gary M. Rand and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 1152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is divided into three parts. The first part describes basic toxicological concepts and methodologies used in aquatic toxicity testing, including the philosophies underlying testing strategies now required to meet and support regulatory standards. The second part of the book discusses various factors that affect transport, transformation, ultimate distribution, and accumulation of chemicals in the aquatic environment, along with the use of modelling to predict fate.; The final section of the book reviews types of effects or endpoints evaluated in field studies and the use of structure-activity relationships in aquatic toxicology to predict biological activity and physio-chemical properties of a chemical. This section also contains an extensive background of environmental legislation in the USA and within the European Community, and an introduction to hazard/risk assessment with case studies.

Book Introduction to Environmental Toxicology

Download or read book Introduction to Environmental Toxicology written by Wayne Landis and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-12-29 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapidly evolving field of environmental toxicology involves the study of toxic compounds and their effect on living organisms, as well as their fate within the natural environment. Since publication of the first edition, Introduction to Environmental Toxicology has found a secure place among the major texts and references in this field. Introduction to Environmental Toxicology, Third Edition seamlessly covers processes and impacts from the molecular level all the way up to population levels. While retaining the strengths of previous editions, the third edition includes a new chapter on fluoride, an update on endocrine disruption, a discussion of the use of models to reconstruct concentration-response curves, expansion of the metals chapter, and new developments in ecological risk assessment for management decisions at site to regional scales. It is an ideal text for introducing students to the fields of ecotoxicology and risk assessment.

Book Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper

Download or read book Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper written by Mark R. Servos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 720 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there have been emerging concerns regarding the fate and effects of pulp and paper mill effluents on the environment. Countries throughout the world are focusing attention on the implementation of regulatory and monitoring programs. In response, industry has begun to implement a variety of process and treatment technologies designed to minimize or eliminate the potential impacts. Environmental Fate and Effects of Pulp and Paper Mill Effluents explores the most active and critical current research and experimentation from around the world. This comprehensive overview examines the identity and origin of chemicals in pulp mill effluents, environmental fate of chemicals from pulp and paper mills, bioaccumulation of substances from pulp mills to fish and wildlife, field and laboratory studies of biochemical and whole organism responses associated with pulp and paper effluents, integrated monitoring and future research, and policy directions of this rapidly evolving field. Written by prominent scientists from around the world with contributions from industry, government, and academia, this important new book provides a balanced global perspective of the recent scientific findings and the challenges being faced in the immediate future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pollution is undesirable state of the natural environment being contaminated with harmful substances as a consequence of human activities so that the environment becomes harmful or unfit for living things; especially applicable to the contamination of soil, water, or the atmosphere by the discharge of harmful substances. In addition to the harm to living beings, both present or future and known or unknown, pollution cleanup and surveillance are enormous financial drains of the economies of the world. This book focuses on issues and developments critical for the field.

Book Guidance Document on Collection and Preparation of Sediments for Physicochemical Characterization and Biological Testing

Download or read book Guidance Document on Collection and Preparation of Sediments for Physicochemical Characterization and Biological Testing written by Gladys Lorraine Stephenson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes methods recommended for the selection of sampling stations within an environmental study site, and the collection, handling, storage, transportation, and manipulation of samples of whole sediments from marine, estuarine, and freshwater environments. Outlines general methods and procedures for two types of undertakings: monitoring and assessment studies, and studies specified in permit requirements for open-water disposal of dredged materials. Included in the general procedures are recommended methods of collection for test, control, and reference sediment, in-situ collection of pore water, sample handling, transportation, storage methods or conditions, and whole-sediment sample preparation for bioaccumulation tests, physicochemical characterisation, and/or toxicity testing. Methods are also recommended for the laboratory collection of pore water and elutriate from field-collected whole-sediment samples. Additional procedures or conditions specific to the various aquatic environments are also addressed.

Book Chemical Forest Fire Retardants

Download or read book Chemical Forest Fire Retardants written by W. Waynon Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Toxicities of four chemical forest fire retardants, Fire-Trol 100 and 931 (ammonium sulfate, or polyphosphate with an attapulgit clay thickner) and Phos-Chek 202A and 259 (diammonium phosphate with guar gum derivative thickner) were determined by static and flow-through toxicity tests for fry and fingerling coho salmon and rainbow trout; fingerling fathead minnows, bluegills, and largemouth bass; and mature scuds. In static tests, Phos-Chek formulations were more toxic than either of the Fire-Trol formulations to scuds and all life stages of fish. In salmon and trout, fry were generally more susceptible than fingerlings to all formulations; yolk-sac fry were more susceptible than swim-up friy. Toxicities of all formulations to salmon and trout were similar at 6 to 11 degress centigrade. Un-ionized ammonia is believed to be the most toxic component of thes fire retardants.
