Book Toxicity of Some Insecticides to Four Species of Malacostracan Crustaceans

Download or read book Toxicity of Some Insecticides to Four Species of Malacostracan Crustaceans written by Herman O. Sanders and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute and long-term (20-day) toxicities of 40 insecticides to four species of freshwater malacostracan crustaceans (the scud, crayfish, glass shrimp, and aquatic sowbug) were determined in static and intermittent-flow bioassays. An extremely wide range in toxicity was found with scuds generally being the most sensitive, followed in descending order by glass shrimp, sowbugs, and crayfish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Water Pollution Control Act Amendments of 1972 require the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency to publish criteria for water quality accurately reflecting the latest scientific knowledge on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water, including ground water. Proposed Water Quality Criteria were developed and a notice of their availability was published on October 26, 1973 (38 FR 29646). This present volume represents a revision of the proposed water quality criteria based upon a consideration of comments received from other Federal agencies, State agencies, special interest groups and individual scientists. Standards and their criteria are given for over 54 chemicals.

Book excerpt: Section 304(a) (1) of the Clean Water Act 33 U.S.C. 1314(a) (1) requires the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish and periodically update ambient water quality criteria. These criteria are to accurately reflect the latest scientific knowledge (a) on the kind and extent of all identifiable effects on health and welfare including, but not limited to, plankton, fish shellfish, wildlife, plant life, shorelines, beaches, aesthetics, and recreation which may be expected from the presence of pollutants in any body of water including ground water; (b) on the concentration and dispersal of pollutants, or their byproducts, through biological, physical, and chemical processes; and (c) on the effects of pollutants on biological community diversity, productivity, and stability, including information on the factors affecting rates of eutrophication and organic and inorganic sedimentation for varying types of receiving waters. In a continuing effort to provide those who use EPA's water quality and human health criteria with up-to-date criteria values and associated information, the document was assembled. The document includes summaries of all the contaminants for which EPA has developed criteria recommendations.

Book Acute Toxicity of Six Forest Insecticides to Three Aquatic Invertebrates and Four Fishes

Download or read book Acute Toxicity of Six Forest Insecticides to Three Aquatic Invertebrates and Four Fishes written by Herman O. Sanders and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technical grade and field formulations of six experimental forest insecticides -- methomyl, carbaryl, aminocarb, trichlorfon, fenitrothion, and acephate -- were tested for acut toxicity against three species of aquatic invertebrates, (a daphnid, an amphipod, and larvae of a midge), and four species of fish (bluegill, rainbow trout, fathead minnow, channel catfish). Five of the six insecticides were highly toxic or extremely toxic to the daphnid, amphipod, and midge larvae. The sixth insecticide, acephate, was not toxic to invertebrates at concentrations up to 50 mg/L. Five of the insecticides ranged from highly toxic (methomyl to channel catfish) to relatively non-toxic (trichlorfon to fathead minnows); the sixth, acephate, was only slightly toxic to the fishes tested.

Book Reproduction of Smallmouth Bass Micropterus Dolomieui in Bull Shoals Lake Arkansas

Download or read book Reproduction of Smallmouth Bass Micropterus Dolomieui in Bull Shoals Lake Arkansas written by Louis E. Vogele and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smallmouth bass were studied in Bull Shoals Lake to determine the nesting requirements and reproductive capabilities of the species in a reservoir. Underwater observations were conducted weekly in five study areas during the spawning seasons of 1969-76. Length of spawning season was affected by the rate of water temperature rise during the nesting period. Active nests were found at ambient temperatures of 13.3-22.5 degrees Centigrade. Nest were generally on gently sloping rock and gravel bottoms, beside permanent objects such as rocks or sunken logs, and at densities of less than one per 100 m of shoreline.
