Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TOXIC LOVE AND DESIRES is the combo paperback of the Toxic Duet Novellas. How toxic can love really be? Meeting Aaron was the biggest mistake of my life. Not the addictions or my career choice, but the man I chose to marry. He wanted men to hurt me so he could ride in on the white horse to rescue me and take me away from the person he commanded to cause me all the pain in the first place. He was no hero. No white knight. Aaron took it too far when he brought a man to our home who looked past the bruises and saw the broken woman beneath them. Ryan was fiercely protective from the moment he laid his eyes on me and received his assignment. His dark confidence was more intoxicating than any drug, and I found myself wanting more of it. Even though he saved me, I was still fractured. Broken. Craving all the wrong things despite the right thing being in front of me. I didn't know how to love or be loved. I wasn't sure who I was when I was forced to be sober. I had to be taught my worth when I felt worthless. But Aaron wasn't going to give up that easily. Book excerpt: According to the Oxford Dictionary - Addiction (noun): The fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance, thing, or activity. See also: dependency, craving, weakness, compulsion, fixation. Claudia Todd had an addiction...more than one, actually. Food, sex, attention, and Jon. It was her addiction to Jon that landed her in a mental institution after a bottle of pills failed to end her life. A history of depression and feeling abandoned by many whom she loved, including her ex-husband, helped foster her spiral into suicidal tendencies when her married lover chose to remain with his wife. The other man in her life at the time, Patrick, just didn't quite understand or excite her the way Jon did and he was truthfully quite oblivious to Claudia's needs and wants. This is her story; her journey...what led up to being in the mental institution and what transpired once she was able to go home.

Book The Biology of Desire

Download or read book The Biology of Desire written by Marc Lewis and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the vivid, true stories of five people who journeyed into and out of addiction, a renowned neuroscientist explains why the "disease model" of addiction is wrong and illuminates the path to recovery. The psychiatric establishment and rehab industry in the Western world have branded addiction a brain disease. But in The Biology of Desire, cognitive neuroscientist and former addict Marc Lewis makes a convincing case that addiction is not a disease, and shows why the disease model has become an obstacle to healing. Lewis reveals addiction as an unintended consequence of the brain doing what it's supposed to do-seek pleasure and relief-in a world that's not cooperating. As a result, most treatment based on the disease model fails. Lewis shows how treatment can be retooled to achieve lasting recovery. This is enlightening and optimistic reading for anyone who has wrestled with addiction either personally or professionally.

Download or read book The New Asceticism written by Sarah Coakley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-05 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each chapter of The New Asceticism concentrates on a contentious issue in contemporary theology - the role of women in the churches, homosexuality and the priesthood, celibacy and the future of Christian asceticism - in an original thesis about the nature of desire which may start to heal many contemporary wounds. Professor Coakley is as familiar with the Bible and the Early Fathers as she is with the writings of Freud and Jung, and she draws heavily on Gregory of Nyssa's theology of desire in what she proposes. She points the way through the false modern alternatives of repression and libertinism, agape and eros, recovering a way in which desire can be freed from associations with promiscuity and disorder, and forging a new ascetical vision founded in the disciplines of prayer and attention.

Book Flat World Fiction

Download or read book Flat World Fiction written by Liliana M. Naydan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-12-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flat-World Fiction analyzes representations of digital technology and the social and ethical concerns it creates in mainstream literary American fiction and fiction written about the United States in the first two decades of the twenty-first century. In this period, authors such as Don DeLillo, Jennifer Egan, Dave Eggers, Joshua Ferris, Jonathan Safran Foer, Mohsin Hamid, Thomas Pynchon, Kristen Roupenian, Gary Shteyngart, and Zadie Smith found themselves not only implicated in the developing digital world of flat screens but also threatened by it, while simultaneously attempting to critique it. As a result, their texts explore how human relationships with digital devices and media transform human identity and human relationships with one another, history, divinity, capitalism, and nationality. Liliana M. Naydan walks us through these complex relationships, revealing how authors show through their fiction that technology is political. In the process, these authors complement and expand on work by historians, philosophers, and social scientists, creating accessible, literary road maps to our digital future.

Book David Foster Wallace s Toxic Sexuality

Download or read book David Foster Wallace s Toxic Sexuality written by Edward Jackson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Foster Wallace's Toxic Sexuality: Hideousness, Neoliberalism, Spermatics is the first full-length study of perhaps the most controversial aspect of Wallace's work – male sexuality. Departing from biographical accounts of Wallace's troubled relationship to sex, the book offers new and engaging close readings of this vexed topic in both his fiction and non-fiction. Wallace consistently returns to images of sexual toxicity across his career to argue that, when it comes to sex, men are immutably hideous. He makes this argument by drawing on a variety of neoliberal logics and spermatic metaphors, which in their appeal to apparently neutral economic processes and natural bodily facts, forestall the possibility that men can change. The book therefore provides a revisionist account of Wallace's attitudes towards capitalism, as well as a critical dissection of his approach to masculinity and sexuality. In doing so, David Foster Wallace's Toxic Sexuality shows how Wallace can be considered a neoliberal writer, whose commitment to furthering male sexual toxicity is a disturbing but undeniable part of his literary project.

Book Toxic Love

Download or read book Toxic Love written by Kathy Lou Waskett and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-14 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are many forms of toxic love. One form is the kind where you love someone that can hurt or destroy you. Another kind is what you do to yourself to make the pain go away. These types of pain are written about frequently in dramas, tabloids, and self-help books. One type of toxic love is rarely written about. It is a love with someone that is over the Internet. You can't look in the person's eyes. You don't know their character or motives. They will tell you the things you want to hear. They will find out what your passions are. Your interests, dreams, and hopes. They will let you talk about your day. They will seem like your best friend. They make you believe that they will always love you. All you have to do is give your money, bank account information, or resources. They will make it up to you. Sadly, people will do this because they want to believe there are still honest and decent people. They are lonely or want to get rich quickly. The end result is devastating and can lead to bankruptcy, despair, and loss of everything you have worked for. Because the victim "allows" the scammer into their accounts, they have to pick up the pieces. There are many Internet scams out there to get people's money. One of the saddest is where someone is hoping to find love and is deceived online. The scammers' motive is to get money, property, or something else that is valuable to the person they are contacting. What is sad is that most of the victims do this willingly. They are hoping for someone or something better than what they have. This is a story that deals with one of those situations. I hope that you enjoy the story. I also hope that you will learn from our characters what this kind of love can do.

Book Untangling the Seven Desires of Your Heart

Download or read book Untangling the Seven Desires of Your Heart written by Lavon Koerner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2018-11-21 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LaVon Koerner learnt the concepts that prompted the content of this book, while he was setting up and running his International Consulting Business (Revenue Storm). While these concepts were curiously absent from the church, they were constantly revealing themselves while he was conducting international business. As LaVon engaged in multiple cultures in 49 different countries, the patterns became increasingly more noticeable to him. It was out there in the international community that LaVon uncovered the seven common denominators occupying every human heart. They stood out as the most beautifully simplistic common denominators instilled by God in every human heart that all nationalities and peoples shared. In a world that appears to be growing more deeply divided, he found that these commonalities reach beyond skin color, languages, dialects, or cultural mores. We all share in the desperation and the joy of the Seven Desire in EVERY human heart. Your own heart will validate their existence as you read this book. It is now time to put these critical observations in the rightful hands of the church where they belong. If they remain absent from the personal work of the church, we will be failing each other while allowing people to continue in emotional bondage. These longings hold the key to unifying the church as one body sharing all the same aspirations that have been built into our hearts by God himself. We need to fight the obsession over what divides us and move onto these seven common longings that unite us. God designed just one “mankind” and every human being has these exact same seven desires in their hearts. This book will untangle each one of them and set you free from all the negative emotions emanating out of the love-gaps that surround them.
