Download or read book Upper Township and Its Ten Villages written by Robert F. Holden with the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upper Township (after being known as the Upper Precinct of Cape May County since 1723) was founded in 1798 by John Townsend, but actually, the area was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Indians, who lived there and hunted in the rivers and woods for food for hundreds of years. The area grew as people from New York, northern New Jersey, and other outlying areas came to the region for its rich land and natural resources. Whaling, shipbuilding, and farming became the principal jobs. They brought their cultures and religions with them (Quakers, Baptists, Methodists, and Presbyterians), and gradually, an area of just a few villages developed into a larger township with 10 different villages. The 2010 census listed the population at 12,373 over an area of nearly 69 square miles. Residents and visitors can avail themselves of a variety of historic sites such as the Tuckahoe Train Station (1894), the Gandy Farmhouse (1815), and the restored Friendship School (1830s). In addition, there are many activities available both on land and on the Tuckahoe River, as well as the pristine beaches of Strathmere.

Download or read book Our Town written by David L. Kirp and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book is both an inspiring account of public interest law at its best and a sobering assessment of how 'the soul of suburbia' continues to resist social justice. . . . an unexpectedly moving account of hope, idealism, and intelligence." --The New York Times Book Review "A well-written, exhaustively researched account of the legal battle to open New Jersey's suburbs to the poor . . . The authors actually took the time to talk to the lawyers and litigants on both sides of the controversy. Their chronicle of the legal developments is informed, and much improved, by the flesh-and-blood stories of those who actually lived the case. . . . a cautionary and inspiring tale." --The Philadelphia Inquirer "The authors of Our Town in particular enable readers to see historical continuity in legal and popular discussions of race, realism, and housing patterns in American society. Our Town also explores the challenges to public policy raised by the existence of residential segregation patterns." --The Nation " This book] is valuable both as a case study of judicial activism and its consequences and as a detailed anaylsis of suburban attitudes regarding race, class, and property." --Urban Affairs Review
Download or read book Sylvania Lucas County Ohio written by Gayleen Gindy and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Join the author in reliving Sylvania’s over 180 years of history from footpaths to expressways and beyond, in volume eight of an eight volume set. With over 30 years of research she has included every subject imaginable that helped bring Sylvania to where they are today, with excellent schools, over-the-top parks and recreation, rich beautiful homes, commercial and industrial businesses and a quaint historical downtown that looks like it was planned by Norman Rockwell himself. This book is a treasure trove of information for the thousands who have ancestors that once lived and helped Sylvania grow through these years. Located in northwestern Ohio, Sylvania is a suburb of Toledo, Ohio and for many years has been known as “the fastest growing suburb in Lucas County.” A once rural farm community, between both the city and township they have grown from a combined 2,220 residents in 1910, to 48,487 in 2010. Over a short period of time the land has transformed into beautiful subdivisions of grand houses, so that now their subdivision names are all that remain to remind them of their once dense forests and sprawling farmlands. No longer can Sylvania be called the “bedroom community” of Toledo, because over the last 50 years they have done a lot more than sleep.
