Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1832, John, Walter, and Daniel Pearce, and their brother-in-law, William Smith Wilson, walked west from their homes in Ohio prospecting for land. When they reached the Fox River in the vicinity of modern Oswego, they agreed they had found the place they wanted to settle. The next year, 1833, after selling their Ohio farms, they traveled west by wagon with their families and became the first settlers in Oswego Township. Just two years later, Lewis B. Judson and Levi F. Arnold laid out a new village on land first claimed by Wilson, creating the foundation of todays bustling village of Oswego. A stagecoach route crossroads, the seat of Kendall County for nearly 20 years, and a market town for the surrounding agricultural area, Oswego grew steadily until the Civil War. After the war, growth slowed until the second half of the 20th century when the area began to boom, both in population and economically. This book offers many of the areas newest residents a chance to look back at Oswego Townships rich heritage.

Book The Assignment

Book excerpt: Inspired by a real-life incident, this riveting novel explores the dangerous impact discrimination and antisemitism have on one community when a school assignment goes terribly wrong. Would you defend the indefensible? That's what seniors Logan March and Cade Crawford are asked to do when a favorite teacher instructs a group of students to argue for the Final Solution--the Nazi plan for the genocide of the Jewish people. Logan and Cade decide they must take a stand, and soon their actions draw the attention of the student body, the administration, and the community at large. But not everyone feels as Logan and Cade do--after all, isn't a school debate just a school debate? It's not long before the situation explodes, and acrimony and anger result. Based on true events, The Assignment asks: What does it take for tolerance, justice, and love to prevail? "An important look at a critical moment in history through a modern lens showcasing the power of student activism." --SLJ

Book excerpt: Nine Half-Shire townships along the lower eastern shore of Lake Ontario share a rich two-hundred-year history: Albion, Amboy, Boylston, Orwell, Parish, Redfield, Richland, Sandy Creek, and Williamstown. Northeastern Oswego County explores this region, following its journey from rugged pioneer settlement through forestry, agriculture, and brief industrialization into the twentieth century. Highlighted are well-known and lesser-known citizens, including steam wagon inventor Will Smart, the Castor sisters, artist Milton Avery, entrepreneurs John Ben Snow and Harry Moody, Case Wall builder Jerome Case, and Colonel Thomas Meacham, who produced the "great cheese" presented to President Andrew Jackson. Pictured are many fine examples of New England-style churches and rural American architecture, Salmon River's majestic falls, Albion's sand-covered Arabia district, Port Ontario's ill-fated river port, the dune-side cottages of Sandy Pond, and the sugar shacks on Tug Hill.

Book Dr Mary Walker

Download or read book Dr Mary Walker written by Sharon M Harris and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A suffragist who wore pants. This is just the simplest of ways Dr. Mary Walker is recognized in the fields of literature, feminist and gender studies, history, psychology, and sociology. Perhaps more telling about her life are the words of an 1866 London Anglo-American Times reporter, "Her strange adventures, thrilling experiences, important services and marvelous achievements exceed anything that modern romance or fiction has produced. . . . She has been one of the greatest benefactors of her sex and of the human race." In this biography Sharon M. Harris steers away from a simplistic view and showcases Walker as a Medal of Honor recipient, examining her work as an activist, author, and Civil War surgeon, along with the many nineteenth-century issues she championed:political, social, medical, and legal reforms, abolition, temperance, gender equality, U.S. imperialism, and the New Woman. Rich in research and keyed to a new generation, Dr. Mary Walker captures its subject's articulate political voice, public self, and the realities of an individual whose ardent beliefs in justice helped shape the radical politics of her time.
