Book Coyotes and Town Dogs

Download or read book Coyotes and Town Dogs written by Susan Zakin and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From tree-spiking old-growth forests to "cracking" desert dams, Earth First! redefined environmentalism in America. Susan Zakin's fast-paced tale of these scruffy radicals and their suit-and-tie counterparts in Washington, D.C., has been described as an unholy marriage of Hunter S. Thompson and Tom Wolfe. The hipster cowboys who founded Earth First! were the first people to sound the alarm on globalization, extinction, and other major environmental issues that face us today. Zakin's gonzo yet impeccably researched account of the rocky trail leading to the morning when FBI agents rousted Earth First! founder Dave Foreman from his bed at gunpoint is essential reading for anyone who cares about mountains, deserts, and freedom.

Book excerpt: In 2015, Cara Achterberg’s Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes, which rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south and shuttles them north to foster homes. Nine puppies arrived with less than a day’s notice; a heart-worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep. The stories of these remarkable dogs—including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring book. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many lovable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on a journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2009-02-19
  • ISBN : 0307489183

Download or read book The Other End of the Leash written by Patricia McConnell, Ph.D. and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2009-02-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn to communicate with your dog—using their language “Good reading for dog lovers and an immensely useful manual for dog owners.”—The Washington Post An Applied Animal Behaviorist and dog trainer with more than twenty years’ experience, Dr. Patricia McConnell reveals a revolutionary new perspective on our relationship with dogs—sharing insights on how “man’s best friend” might interpret our behavior, as well as essential advice on how to interact with our four-legged friends in ways that bring out the best in them. After all, humans and dogs are two entirely different species, each shaped by its individual evolutionary heritage. Quite simply, humans are primates and dogs are canids (as are wolves, coyotes, and foxes). Since we each speak a different native tongue, a lot gets lost in the translation. This marvelous guide demonstrates how even the slightest changes in our voices and in the ways we stand can help dogs understand what we want. Inside you will discover: • How you can get your dog to come when called by acting less like a primate and more like a dog • Why the advice to “get dominance” over your dog can cause problems • Why “rough and tumble primate play” can lead to trouble—and how to play with your dog in ways that are fun and keep him out of mischief • How dogs and humans share personality types—and why most dogs want to live with benevolent leaders rather than “alpha wanna-bes!” Fascinating, insightful, and compelling, The Other End of the Leash is a book that strives to help you connect with your dog in a completely new way—so as to enrich that most rewarding of relationships.

Book excerpt: America's foremost authorities on dog care and training distill decades of experience in a comprehensive "foundational" guide for dog owners. No matter what training method or techniques you use with your dog, the training is unlikely to be optimally successful unless it is predicated on an understanding of the dog's true nature. Dogs need food, water, exercise and play, rest, veterinary care -- the basics. But since dogs naturally want to be led, they also need focused and compassionate guidance. Through abundant stories and case studies, the authors reveal how canine nature manifests itself in various behaviors, some potentially disruptive to domestic accord, and show how in addressing these behaviors you can strengthen the bond with your dog as well as keep the peace. The promise of this book is that, especially in an ever-accelerating world filled with digital distractions, you can learn from your dog's example how to live in the moment, thereby enriching your life immeasurably.

Book Considerations for the City Dog

    Book Details:
  • Author : Melissa McCue-McGrath
  • Publisher : Muttstuff Publishing
  • Release : 2015-05-31
  • ISBN : 9780996275507
  • Pages : 194 pages

Download or read book Considerations for the City Dog written by Melissa McCue-McGrath and published by Muttstuff Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-31 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melissa McCue-McGrath CPDT-KA, wrote this book in response to a dog nearly killing a 6'4" man and his German shepherd in her city. After that terrible incident, and a decade of working with frustrated dogs in urban centers, she spoke with professionals in related dog industries. She consulted with veterinarians, rescue volunteers, behavior specialists, certified dog trainers, dog daycare providers, groomers and more to identify why urban dogs are failing, and what we need to do to help these dogs succeed. The same issues -- and solutions -- came up again and again across the board. This book explains how to find the right dog for a city environment; identifies how to find a good care taker for your pet; defines "behaviorist"; explains how to get exercise for an athletic dog in a city of leash-laws; and pontificates on how to responsibly advocate for an urban dog. Most importantly, this book lays out how exactly to find reputable help for any possible issue, and holds your hand if things are not working as hoped. This is not a dog training book - there are thousands on the market already. Instead, this book will supplement any science-based training regimen. It gives insight as to why dogs do what they do, but perhaps more importantly, it explains why people do what they do and why we must do better for the sake of our urban dogs. We all need to do better - our urban dogs are in the balance.

Download or read book Good Guys Love Dogs written by Inglath Cooper and published by Fence Free Entertainment. This book was released on 2019-02-17 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small town contemporary romance with heart. . . She's Main Street. He's Wall Street. Desperate father Ian McKinley moves his delinquent teenage son to the small Virginia town of Keeling Creek, a place very unlike the New York City life he has been leading. Love takes him by surprise when he falls for Colby Williams, a woman unlike anyone he has ever been drawn to, a small town vet with a heart for animals and a fierce love for a teenage daughter she is also struggling to raise. But Colby has a secret in her past, a secret she's not sure her daughter will ever forgive her for. And as for Ian McKinley, he seems too good to be true. If she had learned anything from the one time she had thrown her heart fully into love, it was that it didn't last. What else could Ian and Colby possibly have in common? Dogs? Yes. Love? Maybe. *** ★★★★★ Wow! Powerful story about the healing power of love. And not just the love between a man and woman, but the love of parents for their children, the children for their parents and the love between people and their pets. This story covers it all! I loved it. ★★★★★ Excellent and sweet. A very well done story about two single-parents of teenagers, trying to do their best. Each have suffered losses that make loving and trusting again a challenge to overcome. Lovely, rich characters set in a small-town, with excellent veterinarian Colby - a strong and successful woman, and gorgeous work-obsessed Ian, who comes to the small town to get his son in a slower environment due to some acting out that life in NYC made too easy. Rich storytelling, a very engrossing read! ★★★★★ I loved every bit of this book. "And Then You Loved Me" is the first book I read by Inglath Cooper. I queued a few more of her books to read and picked this first because I love dogs (and cats) and we have a veterinarian in our family. Whatever the reasons I loved every chapter of this book. I hated to reach the end but there could be an obvious follow-up to this. I hope so. For now I need to read every book by Inglath Cooper that I can find. ★★★★★ Fun, Fresh, Fast and Relaxing Read. Good Guys Love Dogs was my first read by Inglath Cooper. Great style and enjoyable. Fast moving and interesting with characters I could relate to. I will be reading more Inglath Cooper books.
