We focus on ground-based sensing techniques, consisting of two stages. In the first stage, I present two new methods using either images or mobile LiDAR data alone for 3D urban modeling. The limitations of using each data alone are discussed, which leads to the sensor fusion research in the next phase. In the second stage, I introduce methodologies to maximize the synergy by fusing images and mobile LIDAR for upsampling range data towards the goal of generating 3D photorealistic urban models. There are fundamental research challenges involved in each stage of this work. In the first stage, I address the ill-posed problem of how much 3D information we can infer from single images. Book excerpt: The processing of a very large set of LiDAR data is very costly and necessitates automatic 3D modeling approaches. In addition, incomplete point clouds caused by occlusion and uneven density and the uncertainties in the processing of LiDAR data make it difficult to automatic creation of semantically enriched 3D models. This research work aims at developing new solutions for the automatic creation of complete 3D geometric models with semantic labels from incomplete point clouds. A framework integrating knowledge about objects in urban scenes into 3D modeling is proposed for improving the completeness of 3D geometric models using qualitative reasoning based on semantic information of objects and their components, their geometric and spatial relations. Moreover, we aim at taking advantage of the qualitative knowledge of objects in automatic feature recognition and further in the creation of complete 3D geometric models from incomplete point clouds. To achieve this goal, several algorithms are proposed for automatic segmentation, the identification of the topological relations between object components, feature recognition and the creation of complete 3D geometric models. (1) Machine learning solutions have been proposed for automatic semantic segmentation and CAD-like segmentation to segment objects with complex structures. (2) We proposed an algorithm to efficiently identify topological relationships between object components extracted from point clouds to assemble a Boundary Representation model. (3) The integration of object knowledge and feature recognition has been developed to automatically obtain semantic labels of objects and their components. In order to deal with uncertain information, a rule-based automatic uncertain reasoning solution was developed to recognize building components from uncertain information extracted from point clouds. (4) A heuristic method for creating complete 3D geometric models was designed using building knowledge, geometric and topological relations of building components, and semantic information obtained from feature recognition. Finally, the proposed framework for improving automatic 3D modeling from point clouds of urban areas has been validated by a case study aimed at creating a complete 3D building model. Experiments demonstrate that the integration of knowledge into the steps of 3D modeling is effective in creating a complete building model from incomplete point clouds.

Book excerpt: 3D urban reconstruction is an active research area which is significant for many applications, such as virtual tours and urban planning. 3D facade reconstruction is a fundamental task in this research area. 3D real-time LiDAR is an ideal choice for capturing the 3D data in large-scale 3D urban reconstruction because of its fast working speed and mobility. However, the resulting 3D point cloud is very sparse and is not directly suitable for 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we aim to provide a new method for 3D facade reconstruction, which is based on the fusion of 3D terrestrial LiDAR and images. Our novelty lies in the extraction of semantic information from images and a state-of-the-art depth completion method used to estimate the missing depth information in LiDAR scans. The basic idea of our 3D facade reconstruction method is an iterative optimization process of sparse depth maps. More specifically, the input LiDAR point cloud is first converted to a depth map of the input image. Then, facade elements made of glass (e.g., windows) are extracted by using an instance segmentation technique. Once these elements are located, their exact depth values can be estimated by using weak architectural constraints. Finally, a data-driven depth completion methods based on CNN is used for predicting the rest of missing depth data in the semi-dense depth map, which generates the final completed dense depth map. Besides, we present a new dataset used for 3D facade reconstruction. The dataset contains LiDAR scans and images of the 15 different facades in the City Campus of the University of Auckland. All the 2D and 3D data in this dataset are calibrated. The proposed 3D facade reconstruction method was evaluated on this new dataset. The experimental results show that our approach can generate photorealistic 3D reconstruction models for some particular styles of facades. Also, our method is able to identify facade elements such as windows and doors to enhance 3D models of buildings semantically.
