Book Strategies to Cope with Risks of Uncertain Water Supply in Spate Irrigation Systems

Download or read book Strategies to Cope with Risks of Uncertain Water Supply in Spate Irrigation Systems written by Eiman Mohamed Fadul Bashir and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-02-07 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flood based irrigation in particular spate irrigation relies on variable flood scenarios occurring every year. Management of spate flood for spate irrigation must cope with the variability and uncertainty of water supply. Coping with water supply risks is often the only way to harness the opportunities for a productive use of water in arid environment. Integrating and strengthening community responses into irrigation policies and improvement plans could ensure sustainable and productive spate irrigated systems that can achieve food security for the poor population. This research analyses and evaluates risks and coping strategies developed by farming communities in the Gash spate irrigation system in Sudan, Eastern Africa. The research has synthesized different coping strategies developed by farmers, water user associations and water managers to cope with low, high and untimely flood risks. The research provide different frameworks that can assist with the identification of risk sources, pathways and propagation as well as evaluation of locally developed strategies at field, secondary and intake systems. The findings of this study contribute to scarce knowledge on spate irrigation system and provide scientifically sound and evidence-based insights to aid informed policy and decision making to improve productivity and sustainability of the spate irrigation systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive overview of the hydrology of the Nile River, especially the ecohydrological degradation and challenges the basin is facing, the impact of climate change on water availability and the transboundary water management issues. The book includes analysis and approaches that will help provide different insights into the hydrology of this complex basin, which covers 11 countries and is home to over 300 million people. The need for water-sharing agreements that reflect the current situations of riparian countries and are based on equitable water- sharing principles is stressed in many chapters. This book explores water resource availability and quality and their trends in the basin, soil erosion and watershed degradation at different scales, water and health, land use and climate change impact, transboundary issues and water management, dams, reservoirs and lakes. The link between watershed and river water quantity and quality is discussed pointing out the importance of watershed protection for better water resource management, water accessibility, institutional set-up and policy, water demand and management. The book also presents the water sharing sticking points in relation to historical treaties and the emerging water demands of the upstream riparian countries. The need for collaboration and identification of common ground to resolve the transboundary water management issues and secure a win-win is also indicated.

Book Soil and Water Management in Spate Irrigation Systems in Eritrea

Download or read book Soil and Water Management in Spate Irrigation Systems in Eritrea written by Mehreteab Tesfai Hadera and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spate irrigation has been practised over 100 years in the Red Sea coastal zone of Eritrea such as the Sheeb area. Main problem of the spate irrigation system is water shortage caused by irregular rainfall in the highlands of Eritrea and breaching of the irrigation structures by destructive big floods. Annually, a tremendous amount of soil with nutrients is eroded from the adjacent highlands, transported by seasonal streams (wadis) and deposited on the lowlands in the irrigated fields. The dominant types of soils of Sheeb area are the Fluvisols, which have good physical and chemical properties. The annual sedimentation on the spate fields enables the farmers to harvest a crop without application of fertilisers. A nutrient balance study revealed no soil mining in the spate fields. Farmers in Sheeb could obtain a more uniform water distribution over their fields with better levelling. Of the total area of Sheeb (8,000 ha), about 3,160 ha of land was classified as highly and moderately suitable for spate irrigation. When the flood diversion structures (at wadis Laba and Maiule) are made more permanent, an additional 2, 000 ha of land can be irrigated. In general, spate irrigation production system is a 'cost effective' system if the irrigation structures are properly maintained at low cost and if the fields receive enough water and nutrients.

Book Anthropogenic Aquifer Recharge

Download or read book Anthropogenic Aquifer Recharge written by Robert G. Maliva and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is an overview of the diversity of anthropogenic aquifer recharge (AAR) techniques that use aquifers to store and treat water. It focusses on the processes and the hydrogeological and geochemical factors that affect their performance. This book is written from an applied perspective with a focus of taking advantage of global historical experiences, both positive and negative, as a guide to future implementation. Most AAR techniques are now mature technologies in that they have been employed for some time, their scientific background is well understood, and their initial operational challenges and associated solutions have been identified. However, opportunities exist for improved implementation and some recently employed and potential future innovations are presented. AAR which includes managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a very important area of water resources management and there is no recent books that specifically and comprehensively addresses the subject.

Book Land and Water Integration and River Basin Management

Download or read book Land and Water Integration and River Basin Management written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since water sustains life, effective management of water resources demands a holistic approach, linking social and economic development with protection of natural ecosystems. The effective management links land and water resources across the whole of a catchment area or groundwater aquifer. The Workshop addressed the broader issues of water management in the context of land use and the environment and within the framework of river basin management. More specifically, the Workshop dealt with: defining land and water linkages; developing a conceptual framework to predict land, water and plant nutrient interaction; establishing a landscape and river basin approach to integrated management of natural resources; and drafting a programme of action including applied research and modelling, education, extension and manuals and field projects aimed at promoting integrated management of natural resources. This publication contains the report and recommendations of the Workshop and edited versions of eight papers which were presented and discussed in the Workshop.

Book Water Harvesting in Sub Saharan Africa

Download or read book Water Harvesting in Sub Saharan Africa written by William Critchley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa is constrained by highly variable rainfall, frequent drought and low water productivity. There is an urgent need, heightened by climate change, for appropriate technologies to address this problem through managing and increasing the quantity of water on farmers’ fields – water harvesting. This book defines water harvesting as a set of approaches which occupy an intermediate position along the water-management spectrum extending from in situ moisture conservation to irrigated agriculture. They generally comprise small-scale systems that induce, collect, store and make use of local surface runoff for agriculture. The authors review development experience and set out the state of the art of water harvesting for crop production and other benefits in Sub-Saharan Africa. This includes an assessment of water harvesting schemes that were initiated two or three decades ago when interest was stimulated by the droughts of the 1970s and 1980s. These provide lessons to promote sustainable development of dryland agriculture in the face of changing environmental conditions. Case studies from eight countries across Sub-Saharan Africa provide the evidence base. Each follows a similar format and is based on assessments conducted in collaboration with in-country partners, with a focus on attempts to promote adoption of water harvesting, both horizontally (spread) and vertically (institutionalization). Introductory cross-cutting chapters as well as an analytical conclusion are also included.
