Book excerpt: Development partners have recognized the obligation to mitigate HIV risks associated with infrastructure development as an opportunity to contribute to the fight against HIV/AIDS and poverty in the Greater Mekong Subregion. Development partners agreed to strengthen inter-agency cooperation and harmonization to scale up and enhance the effectiveness of HIV and AIDS prevention in future infrastructure interventions. Book Patrolling Epistemic Borders in a World of Borderless Pandemics

Download or read book Patrolling Epistemic Borders in a World of Borderless Pandemics written by Artwell Nhemachena and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2021-11-19 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global epistemological gendarmerie do not only police epistemologies but they also infect the world with infectious epidemics of laughter targeted at those people whose epistemologies are offhandedly condemned as sterile and useless in controlling and containing pandemics. Patrolling epistemic borders in ways that demobilise indigenous epistemologies, the global epistemological policemen have ironically managed to prevent "transgressive" epistemologies from crossing borders but they have fatally failed to prevent the transgressive COVID-19 from recurrently crossing borders, be they bodily, national or continental. Brandishing fetishised degree and diploma certificates, African comprador academics, who are more interested in fetishised ranks and titles than in creativity and innovation, have also fatally failed to help African communities by producing vaccines for Africans by Africans. Arguing that Eurocentric epistemologies have become sterile fetishes, the book contends that such epistemologies have disabled African scholars from actively producing vaccines on a continent where there are paradoxically more epidemics of mimetic laughter than there are efforts at creativity and innovation. The book is useful for scholars in sociology, anthropology, development studies, languages and communication, natural sciences, historical studies and social work.

Book Human Security in a Borderless World

Download or read book Human Security in a Borderless World written by Derek S. Reveron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To fully understand contemporary security studies, we must move beyond the traditional focus on major national powers and big wars. Modern threats to security include issues such as globalization, climate change, pandemic diseases, endemic poverty, weak and failing states, transnational narcotics trafficking, piracy, and vulnerable information systems. Human Security in a Borderless World offers a fresh, detailed examination of these challenges that threaten human beings, their societies, and their governments today. Authors Derek S. Reveron and Kathleen A. Mahoney-Norris provide a thought-provoking exploration of civic, economic, environmental, maritime, health, and cyber security issues in this era of globalization, including thorough consideration of the policy implications for the United States. They argue that human security is now national security. This timely and engaging book is an essential text for today's courses on security studies, foreign policy, international relations, and global issues. Features include three special sections in each chapter that explain potential counterarguments about the topic under consideration; explore the policy debates that dominate the area of study; and illuminate concrete examples of security threats. Richly illustrated and accessibly written, Human Security in a Borderless World is designed to encourage critical thinking and bring the material to life for students.
