Book excerpt: Packed bed reactors are well known for their vast and diverse applications in the chemical industry; from gas absorption, to stripping, to catalytic conversion. Use of this type of reactor in terrestrial applications has been rather extensive because of its simplicity and relative ease of operation. Developing similar reactors for use in microgravity is critical to many space-based advanced life support systems. However, the hydrodynamics of two-phase flow packed bed reactors in this new environment and the effects of one physiochemical process on another has not been adequately assessed. Surface tension or capillary forces play a much greater role which results in a shifting in flow regime transitions and pressure drop. Results from low gravity experiments related to flow regimes and two-phase pressure drop models are presented in this paper along with a description of plans for a flight experiment on the International Space Station (ISS). Understanding the packed bed hydrodynamics and its effects on mass transfer processes in microgravity is crucial for the design of packed bed chemical or biological reactors to be used for water reclamation and other life support processes involving water purification. Book excerpt: Surveyed in this book are the kinetics of non-linear mass transfer and its effects on hydrodynamic stability in systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, in electrochemical systems with high current density and in chemically reacting systems. In Part 1 the non-linear mass transfer as a result of an intensive interphase mass transfer in the gas (liquid)-solid surface, gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems is considered in the duffusion boundary layer approximation as well as in flat channel taking the longitudinal diffusion into account. The influence of the direction of the intensive interphase mass transfer on heat transfer and multi-component mass transfer is illustrated. Part 2 discusses non-linear mass transfer in electrochemical systems with high current density using the examples of the anode dissolving of metals in the electrolyte flow and the electro-separation of metals out of concentrated solutions. The theory of the measured electrochemical treatment of metals and alloys, which is a method of wide practical use, has been elaborated on this basis. In Part 3 the non-linear mass transfer in chemically reacting systems is considered in the cases of: non-linearity of the equations of the chemical reaction's kinetics and intensive interphase mass transfer or thermo-capillary effect due to chemical reactions. On this basis, the mechanisms and the macro-kinetics of the chemical transformations in the gas-liquid systems are discussed. Part 4 is dedicated to the chemical reaction kinetics in stationary two phase systems at an arbitrary contact time between phases. In Part 5 the effects of concentration gradients are considered in the approximations of the linear theory of the hydrodynamic stability of almost parallel flows. In systems with intensive interphase mass transfer, the Marangoni effect could also be observed, beside the effect of non-linear mass transfer. A comparative analysis of both effects is made in this book.

It step by step introduces into the heat release inside the fuel, temperature fields in the fuels, the "simple" boiling flow in a pipe described using ideas of different complexity like equilibrium, non equilibrium, homogeneity, non homogeneity. Then the "simple" three-fluid boiling flow in a pipe is described by gradually involving the mechanisms like entrainment and deposition, dynamic fragmentation, collisions, coalescence, turbulence. All heat transfer mechanisms are introduced gradually discussing their uncertainty. Different techniques are introduced like boundary layer treatments or integral methods. Comparisons with experimental data at each step demonstrate the success of the different ideas and models. After an introduction of the design of the reactor pressure vessels for pressurized and boiling water reactors the accuracy of the modern methods is demonstrated using large number of experimental data sets for steady and transient flows in heated bundles. Starting with single pipe boiling going through boiling in the rod bundles the analysis of complete vessel including the reactor is finally demonstrated. Then a powerful method for nonlinear stability analysis of flow boiling and condensation is introduced. Models are presented and their accuracies are investigated for describing critical multiphase flow at different level of complexity. Book excerpt: Mass transfer in reactive and non-reactive multiphase systems is of vital importance in chemical, petrochemical, and biological engineering applications. In this chapter, theories and models of mass transfer in gas-liquid, gas-solid and gas-liquid-solid systems with and without chemical reactions are briefly reviewed. Literature data on the mass transfer characteristics in multiphase reactors over the last two decades with applications to the Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) synthesis are summarized. Moreover, the F-T reactions are described and an overview of the use of Slurry Bubble Column Reactors (SBCRs) and Multitubular Fixed Bed Reactors (MTFBRs) for low temperature F-T (LTFT) synthesis are discussed. The important factors affecting the hydrodynamic (gas holdup, bubble size/distribution) and mass transfer parameters (volumetric mass transfer coefficients) in SBCRs for F-T synthesis, including operating conditions, gas-liquid-solid properties, reactor geometry and internals as well as gas distributors are also discussed. The discussion reveals that the performance of the LTFT SBCR operating in the churn-turbulent flow regime is controlled by the resistance in the liquid-side film and/or the F-T reaction kinetics depending on the operating conditions prevailing in the reactor. Also, there is a great need to understand the behavior and quantify the hydrodynamics and mass transfer in SBCRs operating with syngas (H2 + CO) and F-T reactor wax in the presence of active catalyst (iron or cobalt) under typical F-T synthesis conditions in a large SBCR with an inside diameter ≥0.15m.
