Book Towards a Strategy for the Conservation of Coastal Biological Diversity in Mainland Tanzania

Download or read book Towards a Strategy for the Conservation of Coastal Biological Diversity in Mainland Tanzania written by M. J. Mwandosya and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biodiversity is the sum total of a country's plant, animal, microbial resources and the raw ecological systems that they form and occupy. It is an important raw material for national economic activities; and its conservation depends on how human activities are carried out and how resources such as land, water and forests are allocated and managed. The Rio Summit in 1992 underscored the importance of biodiversity, and Tanzania has ratified the International Convention on the Conservation of Biological Diversity. This study identifies and analyses some of the implications of specific diversity objections in relation to sectoral programmes and interests in forest and agriculture, industry, and tourism in coastal Tanzania.

Book excerpt: One of the cornerstones of life's wonders is the vast array of species filling the planet. From plants to animals to humans, there is no shortage of beings to provide 'spice of life' variety is said to be. Periodically, scientists announce the discovery of a 'new' form of life, so it seems as if Earth is capable of producing new species just to keep us on our toes. At times, the immense breadth of living things can even feel overwhelming, as one pauses to ponder how numerically insignificant humans are when compared to the insect population. Given the biological diversity of the planet, it is incumbent upon humans to safeguard the natural beauty of the environment. To that end, conservation takes on special importance, necessitating the balancing of industrial expansion with preserving the flora and fauna surrounding us. This book is an important tool in understanding and researching the many different life forms spanning the globe. Collected here is a substantial and carefully selected listing of relevant literature on biological diversity and its conservation. Following this bibliography are author, title, and subject indexes to allow for further access to this information. The sheer bulk of the works about biological diversity can be so intimidating that a book such as this one becomes useful in sorting through the resources about the importance of life's variety.

The main part lists over 5,700 monographs and articles, and the second identifies a selection of over 100 special issues of serial publications in which the main theme is related to biodiversity studies. The entries include ratings of the number of citations the work has received in the literature, and key words. The indexes are by general subject, geography, and organism. Book Sources and Sinks of Greenhouse Gases in Tanzania

Download or read book Sources and Sinks of Greenhouse Gases in Tanzania written by Centre for Energy, Environment, Science, and Technology (Tanzania) and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Centre for Energy, Environment, Science and Technology in Tanzania carried out this study on behalf of the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Tourism, Natural Resources and Environment. The research was carried out to meet Tanzania's international treaty obligations covering provision of information about human indicated emissions by sources and removal by sinks of green-house gases, and the phasing out of ozone depleting substances. The study was organised on the basis of the sectors of energy and transport, industry, agriculture, forestry and land-use, commerce and household, and solid waste and wastewater management. A caution was added to the main conclusions that there must be a linkage between the objective of poverty alleviation and improvement of the socio-economic situation of Tanzania and other developing countries.

Book excerpt: Protection and sound management of coastal and marine areas are acknowledged as important mechanisms for alleviating poverty in the developing tropics. Tanzania has had considerable practical experience with a diversity of models that rely on private sector partnerships, community co-management regimes, and government-led initiatives for marine protection. 'Blueprint 2050' outlines a vision of what a protected area system could look like in 50 years. It draws on state-of-the-art ecosystem, socioeconomic, financial, and institutional background studies to paint a picture that emphasizes community-based adaptive co-management within a flexible system of eight protected area networks, one of which is the Exclusive Economic Zone. 'Blueprint 2050 is an impressive piece of professional work which addresses the plight of the many communities whose livelihoods depend on Tanzania's marine resources. Environmental conservation, sustainability, efficiency, good governance, and a pro-poor policy stance come out as key issues in pursuit of Tanzania's millennium development goals by these communities.' -- Hon Raphael OS Mollel, Senior Permanent Secretary Vice President's Office, United Republic of Tanzania 'It is my sincere hope that Blueprint 2050 will serve the intended purpose of promoting the devlopment of marine protected areas based on our current policies and legislation.' -- Hon Madam Rahma M Mshangama, Principal Secretary Ministry of Agriculture Natural Resources, Environment and Co-operatives (MANREC), Zanzibar

Download or read book Connectivity Conservation written by Kevin R. Crooks and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-02 with total page 675 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the biggest threats to the survival of many plant and animal species is the destruction or fragmentation of their natural habitats. The conservation of landscape connections, where animals, plants, and ecological processes can move freely from one habitat to another, is therefore an essential part of any new conservation or environmental protection plan. In practice, however, maintaining, creating, and protecting connectivity in our increasingly dissected world is a daunting challenge. This fascinating volume provides a synthesis on the current status and literature of connectivity conservation research and implementation. It shows the challenges involved in applying existing knowledge to real-world examples and highlights areas in need of further study. Containing contributions from leading scientists and practitioners, this topical and thought-provoking volume will be essential reading for graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in conservation biology and natural resource management.
