Book Towards European Science

Download or read book Towards European Science written by Linda Wedlin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2015-12-18 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the European Research Area was launched at the beginning of the century, significant efforts have been made to realise the vision of a coherent space for science and research in Europe. But how does one define such a space and measure its development? This timely book analyses the dynamics of change in the policy and governance of science and research within Europe over the past decade. It widens the scope of traditional policy analysis by focusing attention on the interaction between policy rationales, new governance mechanisms, and the organisational dynamics of the scientific field. The contributors build a novel analytical framework to understand the European research space as one shifting from a fragmented space of “Science in Europe” to one that is labeled “European Science”. The chapters explore the dynamics of this shift through the lenses of political science, organisation theory, science policy and related analytical traditions. Towards European Science is an interdisciplinary book which will attract a wide set of scholars and professionals interested in science policy, governance and scientific practice. It will also be of use to university leaders and managers, as well as policy-makers and practitioners working on issues of internationalisation and the Europeanisation of science.

Book Towards a European Research Area

Download or read book Towards a European Research Area written by Dorothea Jansen and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft Mbh & Company. This book was released on 2012-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed for academics and practitioners in the area of Research and Technological Development (RTD) policies. It presents analyses of RTD policy at the European level and of its intertwining with the national policy level. It covers issues, such as the role of the EU in basic funding, the need and implementation of Europeanization and internationalization of research, and the growing role of the Framework Programs. Insights into these issues may help to deal with recent questions that have come up with the Communication of the "Innovation Union" "Flagship Initiative. These questions range from the idea of a choice between internationalization of research versus its Europeanization versus an assessment of the possibility of creating a strong European Research Area for international collaboration, while also allowing for the national autonomy of its actors (c.f. proposal of the German Science Council 2010). Some signals (c.f. EUROHORCS/ESF initiative) seem to indicate that Germany's research institutions (MPG, DFG, HRK) are headed in this direction. Book Earth Observation Open Science and Innovation

Download or read book Earth Observation Open Science and Innovation written by Christoph Aubrecht and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past decades, rapid developments in digital and sensing technologies, such as the Cloud, Web and Internet of Things, have dramatically changed the way we live and work. The digital transformation is revolutionizing our ability to monitor our planet and transforming the way we access, process and exploit Earth Observation data from satellites. This book reviews these megatrends and their implications for the Earth Observation community as well as the wider data economy. It provides insight into new paradigms of Open Science and Innovation applied to space data, which are characterized by openness, access to large volume of complex data, wide availability of new community tools, new techniques for big data analytics such as Artificial Intelligence, unprecedented level of computing power, and new types of collaboration among researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs and citizen scientists. In addition, this book aims to provide readers with some reflections on the future of Earth Observation, highlighting through a series of use cases not just the new opportunities created by the New Space revolution, but also the new challenges that must be addressed in order to make the most of the large volume of complex and diverse data delivered by the new generation of satellites. Book The European Research Area

Download or read book The European Research Area written by Álvaro de Elera and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of a European Research Area was launched by the Commission in 2000 with the intention of becoming a watershed in European research policy. The aim was to create an "internal market of research," in contrast with previous efforts in research policy that amounted to continued fragmentation. Lack of support from both Member States and the Council, together with the almost exclusive use of the Open Method of Coordination for the design of the Area, meant that the initially high ambitions were not met. The social repercussions of the project were also watered down as a consequence.

Book The Economics of Big Science

Download or read book The Economics of Big Science written by Hans Peter Beck and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this open access volume identify the key ingredients for success in capitalizing on public investments in scientific projects and the development of large-scale research infrastructures. Investment in science – whether in education and training or through public funding for developing new research tools and technologies – is a crucial priority. Authors from big research laboratories/organizations, funding agencies and academia discuss how investing in science can produce societal benefits as well as identifying future challenges for scientists and policy makers. The volume cites different ways to assess the socio-economic impact of Research Infrastructures and their role as hubs of global collaboration, creativity and innovation. It highlights the different benefits stemming from fundamental research at the local, national and global level, while also inviting us to rethink the notion of “benefit” in the 21st century. Public investment is required to maintain the pace of technological and scientific advancements over the next decades. Far from advocating a radical transformation and massive expansion in funding, the authors suggest ways for maintaining a strong foundation of science and research to ensure that we continue to benefit from the outputs. The volume draws inspiration from the first “Economics of Big Science” workshop, held in Brussels in 2019 with the aim of creating a new space for dialogue and interaction between representatives of Big Science organizations, policy makers and academia. It aspires to provide useful reading for policy makers, scientists and students of science, who are increasingly called upon to explain the value of fundamental research and adopt the language and logic of economics when engaging in policy discussions.
