The topic of the summer school was "Multimodality in Language and Speech Systems" (MiLaSS). The issue of multimodality in interpersonal, face-to-face communication has been an important research topic for a number of years. With the increasing sophistication of computer-based interactive systems using language and speech, the topic of multimodal interaction has received renewed interest both in terms of human-human interaction and human-machine interaction. Nine lecturers contri buted to the summer school with courses on specialized topics ranging from the technology and science of creating talking faces to human-human communication, which is mediated by computer for the handicapped. Eight of the nine lecturers are represented in this book. The summer school attracted more than 60 participants from Europe, Asia and North America representing not only graduate students but also senior researchers from both academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The variety of surface forms that may be used to convey a given speech act pose a major problem in modelling task-oriented (and other) dialogues. Many such forms are so-called indirect speech acts, that is, surface form does not correspond to the (or one) intended speech act. While this topic has received attention from linguists, their concerns have not usually been computationally motivated. In this paper, I present a non-computational analysis of indirect speech act forms with an eye to computational considerations. The paper is divided into two parts. Part 1 presents categories and rules for indirect speech acts, justified where possible by traditional linguistic arguments. The second part of the paper draws a set of computational implications from the material presented in Part 1. This is done within the general framework of a process model of recognition. Part 2 contains a discussion of the basic types of mechanisms needed for the classes of indirect speech act identified in Part 1. The discussion includes an examination of the dependencies between processes and an initial categorization of the types of knowledge that must be considered in interpreting indirect speech acts. Understanding the mechanisms of language use in dialogue not only enriches our knowledge of human cognition in general, but also provides insight to understand the psychological and social aspects of communication as well, and has the potential to facilitate the design of systems, such as natural language interfaces. Language use in dialogue is characterized from multiple representation levels in most psycholinguistic theories. However, most computational evidence comes from lower level representation levels (e.g., word, syntax etc.), but little work has been done to directly model dialogue from higher levels (e.g., semantic, situational models etc.) due to technical difficulties and lack of data. To address this issue, I propose an information-theoretic perspective that views dialogue as a communication system in which information is contributed by different sources (interlocutors), and conduct a series of computational studies about higher level interaction in dialogue. First, I find evidence showing that the information contribution from interlocutors differs by their roles in initiating topic episodes, and that the aggregated information (without distinguishing interlocutor roles) conforms to the principle of maximizing communication efficiency in Information Theory. Second, I further exploit the analogy of dialogue to communication system, and view the information of utterances as time series. By applying spectral analysis techniques to those time series, I extract useful features that can effectively predict the success of collaboration in task-oriented dialogues.Third, I explore the extended implications of our proposed view by including information as a factor in analyzing the effect of social power on linguistic alignment. We find that linguistic alignment is actually influenced more by low level features such as information, rather than social power. To sum up, modeling language from an information-theoretic perspective is an effective way to study human dialogue at higher representation levels. Interaction patterns of the information representation can characterize some properties of dialogue that are not adequately captured by low level representations. Most of the low level language activities in dialogue can be accounted by the sensitivity to information content, which part of human's innate cognitive traits.

Not only is communication crucial for virtually all interpersonal relations; dialogue is often seen as offering us also a paradigm for important intra-individual processes. The best known example is undoubtedly the idea of concep tualizing thinking as an internal dialogue, "inward dialogue carried on by the mind within itself without spoken sound", as Plato called it in the Sophist. At first, the study of communication seems to be too vaguely defmed to have much promise. It is up to us, so to speak, to decide what to say and how to say it. However, on eloser scrutiny, the process of communication is seen to be subject to various subtle constraints. They are due inter alia to the nature of the parties of the communicative act, and most importantly, to the properties of the language or other method of representation presupposed in that particuIar act of communication. It is therefore not surprising that in the study of communication as a cognitive process the critical issues revolve around the nature of the representations and the nature of the computations that create, maintain and interpret these representations. The term "repre sentation" as used here indicates a particular way of specifying information about a given subject.

Speakers use their conversational context to simplify individual utterances through a number of linguistic devices, including ellipsis and definite references. Yet most computational systems for using natural language treat individual utterances as separate entities, and have distinctly separate processes for handling ellipsis, definite references, and other dialogue phenomena. This book, a slightly revised version of the Ph. D. dissertation that I completed in December 1986, describes a different approach. It presents a computational system, Psli3, that uses the uniform framework of a production system architecture to carry out natural language understanding and generation in a well-integrated way. This is demonstrated primarily through intersentential ellipsis resolution, in addition to examples of definite reference resolution and interactive error correction. The system's conversational context arises naturally as the result of the persistence of the internal representations of previous utterances in working memory. Natural language input is interpreted within this framework using a modification of the syntactic technique of chart parsing, extended to include semantics, and adapted to the production system architecture. This technique, called semantic chart parsing, provides a graceful way of handling ambiguity within this architecture, and allows separate knowledge sources to interact smoothly across different utterances in a highly integrated fashion. xvi Integrated Natural Language Dialogue The design of this system demonstrates how flexible and natural user interactions can be carried out using a system with a naturally flexible control structure.
