This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A.A. co-founder Bill W. tells the story of the growth of Alcoholics Anonymous from its make-or-break beginnings in New York and Akron in the early 1930s to its spread across the country and overseas in the years that followed. A wealth of personal accounts and anecdotes portray the dramatic power of the A.A. Twelve Step program of recovery — unique not only in its approach to treating alcoholism but also in its spiritual impact and social influence. Bill recounts the evolution of the Twelve Steps, the Twelve Traditions and the Twelve Concepts for World Service — those principles and practices that protect A.A.s Three Legacies of Recovery, Unity and Service — and how in 1955 the responsibility for these were passed on by the founding members to the Fellowship (A.A.’s membership at large). In closing chapters of Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age, early "friends of A.A.," including the influential Dr. Silkworth and Father Ed Dowling, share their perspectives. Includes 16 pages of archival photographs. For those interested in the history of A.A. and how it has withstood the test of time, Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age offers on the growth of this ground-breaking movement. Alcoholics Anonymous Comes of Age has been approved by the General Service Conference.

Book excerpt: Cumming also shows that conversion is not merely a personal predisposition of Sartre's--further manifest in his later conversions to Heidegger and to a version of Marxism. Conversion is also philosophical preoccupation, illustrated by the "conversion to the imaginary" whereby Sartre explains how he himself, as well as Genet and Flaubert, became writers. Finally, Cumming details how Husserl's phenomenological method contributed both to the shaping of Sartre's style as a literary writer and to his theory of style.

Book Keigo in Modern Japan

Download or read book Keigo in Modern Japan written by Patricia J. Wetzel and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2004-01-31 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patricia Wetzel offers in this volume a comprehensive examination of a frequently discussed yet much misunderstood aspect of the Japanese language. Keigo, or “polite language,” is often viewed as a quaint accessory to Japanese grammar and a relic of Japan’s feudal past. Nothing, Wetzel contends, could be further from the truth. It is true that Japan has a long history of differentiating linguistic form on the basis of social status, psychological detachment, emotional reserve, and a host of other context-dependent factors. But, as is made clear in this unique and broadly framed study, modern keigo consciousness and keigo grammar emerged out of Japan’s encounter with Western intellectual trends in the mid- to late nineteenth century. Keigo in Modern Japan presents a finely nuanced linguistic and political review of keigo available nowhere else in English. The first chapter outlines the ways in which keigo has been problematized in Western linguistics through the application of structuralist analysis and its offshoots. But keigo’s presence in the English-language literature does not begin to compare with the place it occupies in the Japanese linguistic canon. Wetzel describes the historical roots and growth of keigo and the popularity of how-to manuals, which, she contends, are less about overt instruction than reinforcing what people already believe.

Download or read book Passage to India written by Enrico Beltramini and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-11-17 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abhishiktānanda (also known as Henri le Saux OSB) is among the most studied Roman Catholic expatriates in India. His life and work have been investigated mainly in the fields of spirituality and interreligious dialogue. While his search for the spiritual awakening is well known, however, less known is his effort to reawaken the sacramental sensibility within the Roman Catholic Church. No scholar has, in fact, extensively analyzed Abhishiktānanda's understanding of issues surrounding nature and the supernatural. In this book, the focus is primarily on Abhishiktānanda's concern for the sacramental character of all created existence in terms of the connection between the ecclesial character of his spiritual search and the underlying theme of his theological and literary writings. While the scope of this study is limited, it nonetheless subjects Abhishiktānanda to an interpretative turn by proposing a reinterpretation of him as primarily a product of mid-twentieth century French Roman Catholicism in transition from the reigning neo-Scholasticism to the theology of ressourcement.

  • Publisher : Harper Collins
  • Release : 2014-06-10

  • Pages : 234 pages

Download or read book Refuge Recovery written by Noah Levine and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and renowned Buddhist teacher Noah Levine adapts the Buddha's Four Noble Truths and Eight Fold Path into a proven and systematic approach to recovery from alcohol and drug addiction—an indispensable alternative to the 12-step program. While many desperately need the help of the 12-step recovery program, the traditional AA model's focus on an external higher power can alienate people who don't connect with its religious tenets. Refuge Recovery is a systematic method based on Buddhist principles, which integrates scientific, non-theistic, and psychological insight. Viewing addiction as cravings in the mind and body, Levine shows how a path of meditative awareness can alleviate those desires and ease suffering. Refuge Recovery includes daily meditation practices, written investigations that explore the causes and conditions of our addictions, and advice and inspiration for finding or creating a community to help you heal and awaken. Practical yet compassionate, Levine's successful Refuge Recovery system is designed for anyone interested in a non-theistic approach to recovery and requires no previous experience or knowledge of Buddhism or meditation.
