As the church grows numerically, the African continent is ironically plagued with many regrettable stories of corruption, bad governance, sexual abuse, gender discrimination and perversion, environmental degradation, robbery, economic crisis (leading to poverty and hunger), wars, and other social vices. This paradoxical increase in vices, alongside the demographic growth of the Christian population on the continent, has caused many to question the social impact of African Christianity. Re-Visioning African Pentecostal-Charismatic Ecclesiology in the Public Sphere is a response to these observations. The contributors to this volume, who are made up of seasoned academics (theological educators and missiologists) and mission practitioners, have engaged the subject from multidisciplinary perspectives, highlighting significant contributions of African Pentecostalism while pointing out critical areas for urgent attention. The volume is intended to stimulate conversations around the church's mandate of influencing the public sphere as an agent of social transformation.

Jürgen Moltmann was born into a secular family of teachers in Hamburg in 1926. His plans to study mathematics and physics were interrupted by the destruction of Hamburg in July of 1943. He was one of only a few students serving in the anti-aircraft battery in the central city that survived the Royal Air Force "fire storm" that killed over 40,000. He spent the next three years as a prisoner of war in labor camps in Belgium and Scotland, and finally at Camp Norton near Nottingham in England. After devouring every book that crossed his path during captivity, he eventually turned to reading the psalms and New Testament. These writings soothed his experiences with death, his depression and his guilt, and ushered along his theology, his belief in God and the power of hope. Jürgen Moltmann's work sprung from the social and political turmoil in post World War II German culture. In this Bibliography, the author lists more than twelve hundred sources from Jürgen Moltmann and more than eight hundred significant reviews, articles, and books on his work. He has also included most of the theologian's early writings in either German or English through the year 2001. Besides a foreword and essay by Moltmann, this volume includes a bibliographic biography of his life. Most of his works are listed by title and first place of publication. Also listed are later versions and many of the translations. Translations of Moltmann's major books (in as many European languages as possible) as well as a list of known dissertations and monographs, presented in reverse chronological order for the reader's convenience, make for a well-rounded work. The five essays in this section deal with the Bible, Theology and Ecumenism. The subjects of theological methods, contextual hermeneutics, and appropriate curriculum are given special attention. Of course even foundational issues cannot be discussed in a vacuum and so each of the essays addresses these foundational subjects in the light of African realities. Part Two deals with Contemporary Issues. It is particularly in this section that the traditional themes in African theology have been somewhat displaced by concerns which are today very pressing indeed. Three essays are devoted to the question of HIV/AIDS. This disease, which has devastated the African continent, demands a theological and practical response from those who claim to follow Jesus Christ. If the churches do not respond to this crisis with energy and determination we should not be surprised if the next generation wonders whether the Gospel has the power which we claim that it has. Two essays address the question of Islam and Muslim-Christian Relations in Africa. The resurgence of Islam in the world today is a concern of many. For those who believe in Jesus, this is a challenge which demands much wisdom and love. How should we respond to our Muslim neighbours? What are appropriate and thoughtful ways to share the love of Christ? Two further essays appear under the title of The Marginalized. This could, of course, be a much large section. Those who suffer from AIDS could be included in this number, and one might have expected to see at least one essay on the place of women. In this volume, however, the disabled and youth are highlighted. Both groups are clearly in need of the attention of the churches, and both groups are clearly misunderstood and neglected. The final section of Part Two contains essays, which focus attention on Theological Paedagogy. All of the other contributions to this volume make suggestions and arguments about curriculum, resources, and issues of concern for theological educators. The causal aim of this book is that these essays may help us to reflect in an intentional way on the implications of contemporary realities for the future of theological education.

The book discusses, through the context of higher education discourse of philosophy and comparative education, how global universities have evolved into higher educational institutions concerned with knowledge (re)production for various end purposes that range from individual autonomy, to public accountability, to serving the interests of the economy and markets. The question can legitimately be asked: Is an ubuntu university different from an entrepreneurial university, thinking university, and ecological university? While these different understandings of a university accentuate both the epistemological and moral imperatives in relation to itself and the societies in which they manifest, it is through the ubuntu university that emotivism in the forms of dignity and humaneness will enhance a university’s capacity for autonomy, responsibility, and criticality.
