As Galileo's telescope explored the moon's surface four hundred years ago, nano instrumentation now makes it possible to see the surface of single molecules. Moreover, practitioners are able to manipulate individual atoms and molecules at will to produce pre-designed synthetic materials, non-existent in nature. The combinatorial of heightened observational capacity and the tailoring of synthetic artificial materials exhibiting hitherto novel physical properties has widened and transformed the worlds of scientific knowledge and technical artefact. This book invites the question: to what extent does nanoscale scientific research constitute a kind of 'scientific revolution'?

It further relates to the opportunities found in international settings to help solve health problems more effec tively and efficiently. This includes the unique human resources that are found throughout the world as well as certain natural ecological conditions that cannot be duplicated in the United States. The United States also has a responsibility to contribute to improved health status. Our tradition of humanitarianism alone supports such a re sponsibility, but our comparative wealth of technical and financial re sources dictates a requirement to participate. Modern political realities de fine relationships between developed and developing countries that will not allow us to isolate ourselves from the compelling health needs of a majority of the world's population.

Comprised of 10 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to Marxism and its congruence with other neoclassical doctrines such as the Chicago School, followed by a discussion on development economics as well as the conditions that gave rise to the rapidly growing interest in development. The next chapter traces the origins and history of one major body of Latin American ideas on development since the early 1950s: the United Nation's Economic Commission for Latin America. Subsequent chapters explore internal issues of development within countries, with emphasis on urban and rural bias as well as factors that influence regional development policy; the postwar economic experience of the Third World; and the reactions of developed countries to calls for a new international economic order. This monograph will be of interest to economists and sociologists.

Beck published the now classic "Cognitive Therapy of Depression," and Michael J. Mahoney declared the "Cognitive Revolution," much has happened. What was proposed as the "cognitive revolution" has now become the zeitgeist, and Cognitive Therapy (CT) has grown exponentially with each passing year. A treatment model that was once seen as diffe rent, strange, or even alien, is now commonplace. In fact, many people have allied themselves with CT claiming that they have always done CT. Even my psychoanalytic colleagues have claimed that they often use CT. "After all," they say, "Psychoanalysis is a cognitive therapy." Cognitive Therapy (or Cognitive Psychotherapy) has become a kaleidoscope model of treatment, with influences coming from many sources. Some of these contributory streams have been information pro cessing, behavior therapy, Constructivist psychology, and dynamic psychotherapy. Each of these sources have added color, shading, and depth to the CT model. What was originally uni dimensional in terms of the CT focus on depression has become multidimensional as the CT model has been applied to virtually every patient population, treatment setting, and therapy context. CT must now be seen as a general model of psychotherapy that, with modifications, can be applied to the broad range of clinical problems and syndromes. What has tied these various applications of CT together is the emphasis on a strong grounding in cogni tive theory, a commitment to empirical support, and a dedication to broadening the model.
