Download or read book Identification des principales zones prot g es transfontali res en Europe written by Robert Brunner and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book La Cara be donn es environnementales written by and published by KARTHALA Editions. This book was released on 2006 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume is the work of more than 55 authors from 15 different disciplines and includes complex systems science which studies the viability of components, and also the study of empirical situations. As readers will discover, the coviability of social and ecological systems is based on the contradiction between humanity, which adopts finalized objectives, and the biosphere, which refers to a ecological functions. We see how concrete situations shed light on the coviability’s determinants, and in this book the very nature of the coviability, presented as a concept-paradigm, is defined in a transversal and ontological ways. By adopting a systemic approach, without advocating any economic dogma (such as development) or dichotomizing between humans and nature, while emphasizing what is relevant to humans and what is not, this work neutrally contextualizes man’s place in the biosphere. It offers a new mode of thinking and positioning of the ecological imperative, and will appeal to all those working with social and ecological systems.

Download or read book Island Sustainability II written by S. Favro and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Containing the papers presented at the second conference organised on island sustainability by the Wessex Institute of Technology, the book addresses the massive scale of seasonal population mobility that has such a profound effect on coastal regions and islands. The problems that result from large temporary increases in population are especially serious for islands and archipelagos, which have limited resources and possibilities of developing supporting infrastructures. Most islands cannot provide all the resources required by a large seasonal tourist population; in many cases basic requirements such as water and energy, as well as agricultural produce, must therefore be imported. Authorities need to carefully evaluate the impact of large seasonal population increases on the community and the resulting socio-economic factors, as well as issues related to transportation and communication, all of which should be part of an overall strategy. The topics covered include: Tourism Impact and Strategies, Community Issues, Changing Climate and Environment, Infrastructure, Transport Issues, Natural Resources, Energy Issues, Risk and Safety, Waste Management and Island Services.

Download or read book Oases and Globalization written by Emilie Lavie and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a reference work about the study of oases in the context of globalization. It is based on selected papers presented at the international colloquium entitled Oases in the Globalization, Ruptures and Continuities in Paris (December 16-17th, 2013). The main issue was to understand how oases have been excluded from or included into the process of globalization. In this context, the present book proposes firstly a discussion about the definition(s) of oasis and secondly several case studies analysing socio-spatial mutations in the oasis structure. The third part deals with the compelling globalization at different spatial scales, using two entries: the water management and local impacts of external control.
Download or read book The Gourd Book written by Charles B. Heiser and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humankind has had a long and intimate association with gourds, and one of them, the bottle gourd, or calabash, may have been man's first cultivated plant. Although grown in the United States today primarily as ornamentals, in other parts of the world gourds have many other important uses. With charming text and stunning black-and-white photographs, The Gourd Book provides fascinating scientific information and folklore about these remarkable plants and keys for identifying species. The first part of the book deals with tree gourds, widely used as containers and for decoration; the Cucurbita gourds, including the buffalo gourd, the Turk's turban, the silver-seed gourd, and the Malabar gourd, all utilized as food, and the beautiful ornamental gourds; the loofah gourds, popular as cosmetic sponges; minor gourds, such as the snake, wax, bitter, teasel, and hedgehog, sometimes used as food or medicine; and gourds mentioned in the Bible. The second part takes up the bottle gourd, which has been used for thousands of years. Even today this gourd is almost indispensable in many parts of the tropics, where species are used to make containers, musical instruments, and clothing, as food and medicine, and in art. The book concludes with a discussion of the gourd in folklore and myth and an appendix on growing, hybridizing, and preserving gourds for decoration. Delightfully written for general readers, this book will also appeal to botanists, anthropologists, horticulturists, and everyone interested in plants or gardening.
Download or read book Tourism in the City written by Nicola Bellini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book critically explores the interconnections between tourism and the contemporary city from a policy-oriented standpoint, combining tourism perspectives with discussion of urban models, issues, and challenges. Research-based analyses addressing managerial issues and evaluating policy implications are described, and a comprehensive set of case studies is presented to demonstrate practices and policies in various urban contexts. A key message is that tourism policies should be conceived as integrated urban policies that promote tourism performance as a means of fostering urban quality and the well-being of local communities, e.g., in terms of quality spaces, employment, accessibility, innovation, and learning opportunities. In addition to highlighting the significance of urban tourism in relation to key urban challenges, the book reflects on the risks and tensions associated with its development, including the rise of anti-tourism movements as a reaction to touristification, cultural commodification, and gentrification. Attention is drawn to asymmetries in the costs and benefits of the city tourism phenomenon, and the supposedly unavoidable trade-off between the interests of residents and tourists is critically questioned.
Download or read book Progress in French Tourism Geographies written by Mathis Stock and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-01-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the recent progress in Francophone tourism geography. It focuses on the theoretical advances in social and cultural geography, whereby the symbolic dimensions of tourism and the creation of tourism worlds are key. It puts forward the tourist conceived as mobile, situated, skilled, reflexive inhabitant of places, which gives all its meaning to the expression “inhabiting touristic worlds”. More specifically, this book addresses numerous rarely addressed issues such as the geo-history of tourism, the material cultures of tourists, the digitality and disconnection from digital technologies in National Parcs or the use of knowledge of tourists in metropolises. It gives insights in the specific Francophone approaches such as inhabiting, the urbanity of tourist resorts and the notion of territory in tourist studies. Finally, it provides an overview of the urban dimensions of tourism, place-making in the form of heritage, oasis tourism, sports tourism, production of space in Mexican resorts. As such, the book provides a key read for academics, students and professionals in tourism studies and tourism geography in search for alternative approaches.

Download or read book Tourism and Regional Development written by Maria Giaoutzi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tourist visits used to be a less common activity in the past. However, more people than ever now make leisure trips, making this an era of mass tourism. This drastic change in spatial behaviour is not only caused by economic prosperity, but the scale of this phenomenon means that it is able to generate economic growth, making tourism a key factor in regional development policy. One of the main challenges of current regional policy is to market the attractiveness of an area, thereby increasing tourist visits and subsequent revenue. In particular, regions are attempting this through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), which offer information on interesting places, and efficient methods for organizing and booking trips. This book examines the interconnections between tourism, ICT and regional development. Bringing together a range of European case studies illustrating various ICT and policy innovations, it not only critiques current activity by regions in terms of tourism development, but also considers how this sector is likely to continue to grow.
