Download or read book The Tourist as a Metaphor of the Social World written by Graham Dann and published by CABI. This book was released on 2002 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of papers from the prestigious Research Committee on International Tourism presented at the World Congress of the International Sociological Association, Brisbane, Australia, July 2002. It provides a sociological and anthropological critique of existing tourism theory as well as some directions for its future development and research. While much of the present understanding of the tourist and tourism is grounded in metaphor (e.g. tourism as a sacred journey, tourism as play, the tourist as a child, etc.) such analogies need to be linked to transformations in tourism generating and receiving societies. Hence the focus on the tourist and everyday life, socio-psychological dimensions of the tourist experience, the tourist and conflicting expectations, and the tourist in a changing world.

Download or read book Tourism and Gastronomy written by Anne-Mette Hjalager and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-08-27 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, a growing emphasis has been placed on tourism experiences and attractions related to food. In many cases eating out while on holiday includes the 'consumption' of a local heritage, comparable to what is experienced when visiting historical sites and museums. Despite this increasing attention, however, systematic research on the subject has been nearly absent. Tourism and Gastronomy addresses this by drawing together a group of international experts in order to develop a better understanding of the role, development and future of gastronomy and culinary heritage in tourism. Students and researchers in the areas of tourism, heritage, hospitality, hotel management and catering will find this book an extremely valuable source of information.
Download or read book Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development Goals 1 written by Angela Barthes and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2024-02-28 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1971, UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme has embraced a number of principles that link the political, scientific and academic spheres. Biosphere Reserves and Sustainable Development Goals 1 presents these areas as privileged spaces for experimenting with operating methods specific to cross-cutting objectives and issues. These areas encourage the development of interdisciplinary research, supported by a worldwide network to disseminate experience, approaches and knowhow. The various global and local political scales are linked here, with different consequences for the reconfiguration of local political arenas, for specific modes of development linked to a renewed relationship with knowledge, powers and institutions, and for renewed relationships between the worlds of science, education and territorial governance.

Download or read book Understanding Innovation in Emerging Economic Spaces written by Grzegorz Micek and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small number of countries, regions, cities, and localities are powerful gatekeepers and generate the bulk of creative and innovative ideas, while the majority is largely excluded. This book looks at neglected, but emerging innovation centres analysed from various spatial and organizational perspectives; ranging from entire countries and regions to individual firms and small neighbourhoods. Bringing together leading scholars from various disciplines, it examines a variety of economic sectors including biotechnology, agrotourism, and the food retail industry. The authors employ various, often contradictory, concepts, ranging from local buzz and the global pipeline, through an analysis of collective learning processes to geographical embeddedness, using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The purpose of the book is twofold: investigating changes occurring in the regions and cities under transformation and attempting to find common and unique mechanisms behind these changes. Consequently, the authors shed light on the scale and scope of the innovativeness of selected economic and social processes.

Download or read book Routledge Revivals A Rural Policy for the EEC 1984 written by Hugh Clout and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1984, Hugh Clout’s work contributes to one of the most debated and important topics of the time, the European Economic Community. Starting from the Mid-20th century, Clout explains the profound socio-economic and environmental changes that effected the countryside of Western Europe. This work shows how the EEC’s wide-ranging Common Agricultural Policy added a measure of uniformity to farm policies. Clout reveals that the transformation however was not an entirely healthy one. The broad process of agricultural modernisation reinforced the numerical decline of farm workers throughout Western Europe, weakened many rural communities, and served to accentuate depopulation. Clout’s work ultimately argues forcibly that to produce such a programme for managing rural Europe would be a major challenge for the EEC in the future.

Download or read book Identification des principales zones prot g es transfontali res en Europe written by Robert Brunner and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
Download or read book Cultural and Heritage Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa written by Siamak Seyfi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive account of cultural and heritage tourism in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region and the many complexities that heritage sites and tourist attractions face. The MENA region has long been regarded as the cradle of Western and Arab civilisation and is the home of many of the world’s major religions. Because of this, the region is rich in heritage sites that serve as major tourist attractions and as icons of national, cultural and religious identity. However, as this book examines, heritage in the region is simultaneously highly contested and has even become a target for terrorism creating a situation that brought major challenges for heritage management and sustainable tourism development. Many of the region’s innumerable cultural sites are threatened, in some cases by overuse, in others by neglect and, in many, simply by the pressures of economic development. This book is therefore of interest not only to heritage managers and policy makers but those academics who seek to address the delicate balance between tourism development, communities and the tourists who visit such sites in a turbulent but highly significant region of the world.
Download or read book The Silent COUNTDOWN written by Peter Brimblecombe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing need for cooperation between disciplines, not only to deal with the burning problems of the present, but to study the interaction of societies and their ecosystems in the past. In the 1970s studies in Environmental History were largely confined to North America. Recent years have brought about a vast increase in the "amount, the quality and the scope of scholarship on historical interactions between human (social and economic) de velopment and the biosphere in Europe, both East and West. This broad interest in environmental history may have been heightened and sharpened by the dangers of unbridled technology and unlimited growth, which are becoming more and more manifest. However, for several reasons it is still difficult to become familiar with the different approaches to this new and interdisciplinary of study. Many fields of thought - biology, anthropology, field geography, sociology and history - are involved; the relevant books and articles are hard to find and a coherent theoretical framework is still lacking, because the key issues have yet to be submitted to a thorough scholarly debate. It is hoped that the pre sent volume will make a contribution towards overcoming those shortcomings.
