Book excerpt: This is one of a series of six regional reports by the World Tourism Organization which consider trends in international tourism. The focus is on in-bound tourism. This report is divided into three sections: an overview of developments in the tourism market in the Middle East; a subregional analysis of tourism performance; and an indepth look at tourism trends within each country. The report covers the countries of the Middle East, North Africa and some Mediterranean areas. The statistics have been supplied by the individual countries and comparability is not assured due to variations in data collection methods. In 2000, there were 20.6 million international tourist arrivals in the Middle East region, which represents a 12.9% growth over the previous year.

Book Tourism Market Trends

Download or read book Tourism Market Trends written by and published by World Tourism Organization Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a series of annual reports which analyse trends in international tourism, this volume focuses on regional and subregional tourism flows and earnings through 2002 in the Middle East as a whole, and by individual country. It looks at arrivals, receipts, hotel capacity, and major source markets. During 2002, despite continuing turmoil in the region, the region produced a notable growth rate of 17 per cent, the highest regional rate in the world. This growth is particularly significant given that it reversed the previous year's decline of one per cent, and is largely due to the strength of the Middle Eastern intra-regional market. For the development of future growth in the tourism market in the region, major efforts are being made in the areas of product development (new accommodation capacity and facilities such as marinas and convention centres), marketing strategies, training and access issues.

Book Routledge Handbook on Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book Routledge Handbook on Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa written by Dallen J. Timothy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Handbook on Tourism in the Middle East and North Africa examines the importance of tourism as a historical, economic, social, environmental, religious and political force in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It highlights the ecological and resource challenges related to water, desert environments, climate change and oil. It provides an in-depth analysis of the geopolitical conditions that have long determined the patterns of tourism demand and supply throughout the region and how these play out in the everyday lives of residents and destinations as they attempt to grow tourism or ignore it entirely. While cultural heritage remains the primary tourism asset for the region as a whole, many new types of tourisms are emerging, especially in the Arabian Gulf region, where hyper-development is closely associated with the increasingly prominent role of luxury real estate and shopping, retail, medical tourism, cruises and transit tourism. The growing phenomenon of an expatriate workforce, and how its segregation from the citizenry creates a dual socio-economic system in several countries, is unmatched by other regions of the world. Many indigenous people of MENA keep themselves apart from other dominant groups in the region, although these social boundaries are becoming increasingly blurred as tourism, being one socio-economic force for change, has inspired many nomadic peoples to settle into towns and villages and rely more on tourists for their livelihoods. All of these issues and more shape the foundations of this book. This Handbook is the first of its kind to examine tourism from a broad regional and inclusive perspective, surveying a broad range of social, cultural, heritage, ecological and political matters in a single volume. With a wide range of contributors, many of whom are natives of the Middle East and North Africa, this Handbook is a vital resource for students and scholars interested in Tourism, Middle East Studies and Geography.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was presented at a World Tourism Organization seminar, held in Egypt in September 2002, to discuss prospects and trends in tourism to Middle East and North African (MENA) countries. Issues examined include: attitudes towards travel, leisure and holidays; typical activities undertaken and holiday satisfaction levels; perceived barriers to visiting the region; health, safety and security issues. It looks at a range of visitor profiles, both in terms of the identified characteristics of current and potential visitors to the MENA region, and by individual country.
