Book excerpt: Marine environments continue to be threatened by the growing problem of plastic pollution. As the largest economic sector, the tourism industry is a great contributor to this pollution. Millions of tourists coming to the Mediterranean region cause a substantial increase in the generation of waste which adds to the plastic soup. Multiple plans for interventions started around a decade ago and more policies focussing on waste reduction have been implemented or signed. One of these interventions is a ban on single use plastics, which bans all plastic utensils like cups, plates and straws. Replacing these disposable plastics by biodegradable plastics and reusable products is what the small island destination Isole Tremiti in Italy did when they implemented the ban on single use plastics. This thesis contributes to the literature by providing information on the implementation of an intervention like a ban on single use plastics and takes the influence and experience of tourists as actors on this policy arrangement into account."

Furthermore, the marine environment is an important resource for human welfare and health and fortunately in recent years awareness of its intrinsic value has increased (Derraik, 2002). One particular type of threat to marine ecosystems is the pollution from plastics. These particles are a serious treat to the marine biota and human life and entail significant economic and social costs. Further, they reduce the aesthetic and perhaps intrinsic value of the marine environment (Jenssen, 2003). The aim of this paper is to examine the threats from plastic pollution and introduce an interesting case study from the North Pacific Ocean. The paper will describe the current policies and propose market based instruments which can provide solution to the issue.

Book excerpt: As a specialised language, the terminology of marine pollution by plastics and microplastics is composed mainly of technical-scientific terms from the field of marine ecology, along with general-language words used with a domain-specific meaning. Since there are few existing studies focusing on the linguistic-terminological aspects of ecology, this book analyses the nature, characteristics, and possible applications of the terminology of marine plastic pollution by observing its degree of technicity in different textual genres. To this end, a small but significant corpus of texts embracing three genres (scientific, informative and normative texts) was created and processed with the aid of a software for terminological extraction. Following the results of software analysis, this book shows that this specialised language is mostly used in an expert-to-expert communicative context, although some concepts are simplified and used in other communicative situations.
