Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Pedagogy of Place offers an alternative vision for outdoor education practice. This timely book calls into question some of the underlying assumptions and ‘truths’ about outdoor education, putting forward alternatives to current practice that are responsive to local conditions and cultural traditions. In this renewal of outdoor education philosophy and practice, the emphasis is upon responding to, and empathising with, the outdoors as particular places, rich in local meaning and significance. Current outdoor education theory and practice is influenced by cultural ideas about risk and adventure, and by psychological theories of personal and social development. However, in recent decades the professional discourse of outdoor education has made a noticeable shift to include education for the ‘environment’ and ‘nature’. This has resulted in a mismatch between theory and practice: traditional notions of proving oneself ‘against’ the challenges of the outdoors are antithetical to the development of an empathetic relationship with outdoor places, which growing concern with today’s environment demands. This book is the first of its kind to articulate a renewal of philosophy and practice for outdoor education that is in keeping with the educational needs of today’s young people as they grapple with considerable social and ecological changes in a rapidly changing world. The authors draw extensively on international, national and local literature and provide compelling case studies drawn from the Australian and New Zealand contexts.

  • ISBN : 1741760402
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Slow River written by Steve Strevens and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 2006-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Strevens has lived on the Murray for almost 40 years. During that time he has fished and swum in its waters, climbed and swung from its trees, collected firewood from its forests, kicked a footy along the flats nearby, and made some of his most important decisions sitting on its banks. He even spread his father's ashes on its waters. Slow River is his ode to the Murray and an exploration of why and how it is more than just a river. Bumping along in his ute and steering his old tinnie, Steve explores the full length of the Murray from its source in a small swampy puddle hidden in a clump of tea trees in the mountains to where it meets the sea. This is a rich and generous portrait of the river, its many moods and the people and communities who depend upon it for their sanity and survival.

Book A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain

Download or read book A Tour Through the Whole Island of Great Britain written by Daniel Defoe and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2005-08-25 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Britain in the early eighteenth century: an introduction that is both informative and imaginative, reliable and entertaining. To the tradition of travel writing Daniel Defoe brings a lifetime's experience as a businessman, soldier, economic journalist and spy, and his Tour (1724-6) is an invaluable source of social and economic history. But this book is far more than a beautifully written guide to Britain just before the industrial revolution, for Defoe possessed a wild, inventive streak that endows his work with astonishing energy and tension, and the Tour is his deeply imaginative response to a brave new economic world. By employing his skills as a chronicler, a polemicist and a creative writer keenly sensitive to the depredations of time, Defoe more than achieves his aim of rendering 'the present state' of Britain.
