Book Public Life in Toulouse 1463 1789

Download or read book Public Life in Toulouse 1463 1789 written by Robert A. Schneider and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the public life of the ancien regime over the course of more than 300 years, from the late fifteenth century to the French Revolution. Not merely a narrative of that crowded history, it offers both a reconstruction and an analysis of a variety of religious and cultural movements, from the Renaissance and the Wars of Religion to the Counter-Reformation and the Enlightenment, within the social and political context of Toulouse, a regional capital and a city with a strong local tradition. Professor Schneider takes up a wide range of early modern topics: popular culture, religious riots, municipal government, lay piety, and spiritual kinship, and he also treats learned academies, poor relief, social conflict, civic festivals, Jansenism, and urbanism. He discovers that despite the formation of a new elite in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries—an elite composed of powerful royal magistrates attached to the Parlement of Toulouse and wealthy pastel merchants—the cultural and social ties binding this elite to the urban populace persisted, and the city's public life maintained its local character. Schneider shows that in the late seventeenth century, however, these "vertical" ties began to break down; elites began to turn away from local concerns, and Toulouse's public life was fundamentally transformed. He points to several factors influencing this transformation: the local effects of absolutism, the appeal of Parisian culture and academic life, and the increased social tensions between the prosperous and the poor. By the eighteenth century, Toulouse, once considered a municipal republic, had become a cosmopolitan city. Relating developments in Toulouse to changes occurring elsewhere in France, this book heightens our understanding of the complex cultural ramifications of the rise of the increasingly centralized, absolutist state.

Book Ultraroyalism in Toulouse

Download or read book Ultraroyalism in Toulouse written by David Higgs and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1973. Ultraroyalism in Toulouse examines in detail the origins of ultraroyal hostility to the social and political changes rendered by the French Revolution. France has produced a variety of theories of decline, corresponding to the nation's changing political fortunes in Europe and the world. The Revolution represented another, at least temporary, victory of the state apparatus over local community and privilege, and it stimulated the longing, apparent in all parts of the country after the fall of Napoleon, for a return to older forms of society and government that were essentially provincial and rural. The stevedores of Marseille, the fisherman of Brittany, and the peasants of the Auvergne saw plainly enough that the Revolution had not solved the problems of poverty and economic distress. Like the nobles, the ex-parlementarians, and the descendants of local oligarchies, they were hostile to the ascendancy of Paris. On all levels of French society were those who selectively remembered the best of the Old Regime, dwelt on the most obvious failures of the Revolution's religious and welfare policies, and blamed facile utilitarians who did not understand tradition for the destruction of the pre-1789 institutions. This book examines in depth the form that ultraroyalism took in Toulouse.

Book The Barristers of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century 1740 1793

Download or read book The Barristers of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century 1740 1793 written by Lenard Berlanstein and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2019-12-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975. Following the vein of French historiography, many twentieth-century scholars of the French Revolution believed that the middle class of lawyers played a crucial role in the Revolution. In The Barristers of Toulouse, Lenard Berlanstein contends with that notion in a case study examining the response of the Toulousian legal community to the French Revolution. Using tax rolls, marriage contracts, and court records as primary sources, Professor Berlanstein argues that class interests—such as a desire to preserve their status in the cultured, conservative urban elite—led many Toulousian judges and lawyers to reject the Revolution and to remain loyal to the aristocratic Parlement. In other words, those in the legal community of Toulouse conducted themselves in ways that were consistent with other members of their social and economic class. To supplement his argument, Berlanstein's integrates methods from the New Social History movement.

Book The Nobility of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book The Nobility of Toulouse in the Eighteenth Century written by Robert Forster and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1960. This is a regional study of the nobility of Toulouse in the eighteenth century. The complex notion of class and the peculiarities of each region in France during the Ancien Régime make it difficult for historians to render a general portrait of the provincial French aristocracy. This study describes the economic interests and investments of noblemen in Toulouse. Some of their activities follow the classic pattern of "seigniorial reaction" and thus illustrate ideas posed by Marc Bloch. Others suggest that the Toulousian gentlemen were conscientious landlords. The Toulousian noble was essentially a gentilhomme campagnard, a country gentleman, in regard to his source of revenue, his outlook, and his mode of living. This book should make clear the full meaning of this expression.

Book Toulouse Lautrec

Download or read book Toulouse Lautrec written by Gerstle Mack and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete biography in English of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901), whose short but intensely active life is portrayed against a colorful “gay nineties” background of dance-halls, brothels, cafés-concerts, theaters, circuses, and racecourses. A descendant of one of the noblest families in France, grotesquely deformed, hideously ugly, Lautrec voluntarily renounced the life of a country gentleman for the tawdry environment of Montmartre, where dissipation wrecked his health and brought about his premature death at the age of thirty-seven. Strangely enough, drink and debauchery had little apparent effect on his work; he remained to the end a great artist: a sensitive painter, a superb draughtsman and lithographer, and an unrivaled designer of pictorial posters. “Gerstle Mack’s book, so complete, so searching, so just, adds to his already high prestige as a biographer and, once more (as with respect to the previous book on Cézanne) puts the art world in his debt. The Toulouse-Lautrec biography is informed throughout, with a spirit of warm human understanding and of fine critical integrity.” — Edward Alden Jewell, The New York Times (November 6, 1938) “[A] distinguished and authoritative biography... a definitive work..." — Charles Poore,The New York Times (October 15, 1938) “First-rate biography of the dwarf genius who was one of the best draftsmen of his or any age. Lautrec’s circus-and-brothel background is neatly worked in and the book is full of understanding and sympathy.” — The New Yorker “A distinguished book” — The Atlantic “Mr. Mack’s biography [is] complete, unmitigated, authoritative... a thorough documentation not only of the works but of the milieu of Toulouse-Lautrec.” — The Nation “This is a thoroughly sound and entertaining piece of work.” — Saturday Review “Various biographers have chronicled the brief and meteoric career of Lautrec but none has done it with the thoroughness and dispassionate scholarship, the sensitivity and sympathy, as has Gerstle Mack. The personality of the man rather than his analysis as an artist is Mack’s motivating purpose and he has patiently tracked Lautrec through all the haunts he loved and introduced all of the period’s personalities who were habitués of Lautrec’s world. Mr. Mack has also demolished the popular theory that Lautrec loathed his models and really was a-crusader against the vice he portrayed. Lautrec was a powerful critic of the time and place but always presented the scene with a sympathetic, if trenchant, wit. He provided a profound insight into the times. He displayed the tawdriness disguised as glamour and the boredom disguised as excitement. He created a wonderful and powerful style that has influenced generations of artists, particularly in the graphic arts.” — Irvin Haas, Book Find News “Gerstle Mack has written a book of remarkable interest not only from the point of view of the artist but from the point of view of the variety of human personality. This desperate and talented man shoved his way into the late nineteenth century life of Paris. This book will shove its way into the midtwentieth century life of that western world which is still free to contemplate the essential violence and harmony of art.” — Paul Engle, Chicago Tribune “This first complete English biography is an admirable portrait of Lautrec and his times. Based upon thorough research and first-hand interviews, it makes absorbing reading... We are not told specifically how the simple, eager boy became the strange and contradictory man. Nevertheless, in these days of biographies filled with the speculations of amateur psychiatrists, it is both refreshing and good to re-encounter this sound and unpretentious study.” — Art Digest “An artist’s biography, good reading, with a well-filled background of Montmartre cafés and their owners and entertainers, the theatre, the circus, whorehouses and so on. The man himself is interesting. The sources of his artistic material equally so. He loved sports and his eccentric father wanted him to attain physical perfection, but he was handicapped in his teens by having his legs badly broken. So he turned to art, studying, worshipping Degas and Japanese prints, seeking Paris night life for his subjects, and producing illustrations and poster designs that equalled the fame of his lithographs. An art book as well as excellent biography.” — Kirkus Reviews

Book Adam Smith in Toulouse and Occitania

Download or read book Adam Smith in Toulouse and Occitania written by Alain Alcouffe and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides substantial background on what Adam Smith did during his stay in Toulouse and the Languedoc region of France during the 18th century. This is a crucial period in Smith’s life for at least two reasons: i) it is during this time that Smith began to work on The Wealth of Nations; and ii) it is generally understood that although some of his ideas about political economy were already formed before his trip, his encounters with many French political economists during his time in France helped him to further develop them. As such, this book provides a rich resource to further understanding Smith's world, his travel experiences and the people he met during this time and situates these within the broader context of Smith's life as a whole, and within the British aristocracy. This work will be of value to students and researchers in the history of economic thought, travel studies and Scottish studies.

Book Studies in the Ecclesiastical and Social History of Toulouse in the Age of the Cathars

Download or read book Studies in the Ecclesiastical and Social History of Toulouse in the Age of the Cathars written by John Hine Mundy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in the Ecclesiastical and Social History of Toulouse in the Age of the Cathars is John H. Mundy's last major book concerning social and religious life in the city of Toulouse during the period 1150-1250 AD, a time when the alternate religion of Catharism, together with other divergent beliefs, rose to its height and, soon under intense repression, began to die out. The various studies, entirely reworked for this publication, and prefaced with an account of Mundy's early research in the Toulouse archives in 1946-47, document his understanding that religious divergence flourished when the town's well-to-do were building a semi-popular oligarchy at the expense of local princely power. The book reveals how the religious orders managed an extensive insurance network providing pensions, old age care and burial for lay society. His chapters on hospitals and leprosaries, charities, entertainers, judges, heretics and usurers bring the daily life of this period to life. The studies of Toulouse are enhanced by Mundy's expert cartography drawing on the Plan Sanguet of 1750. This volume, compiled in the year prior to his death, represents the culmination of his long career as archivist, scholar and teacher. It completes the work he began in 1946 and published in earlier books: The Medieval Town (Princeton, 1958), Europe in the High Middle Ages, 1150-1309 (Longman, 1975), The Repression of Catharism at Toulouse: the Royal Diploma of 1279 (Toronto, 1985), Men and Women at Toulouse in the Age of the Cathars (Toronto, 1990) and Society and Government at Toulouse in the Age of the Cathars (PIMS, 1997).
