Book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites

Download or read book High Temperature Mechanical Behaviour of Ceramic Composites written by Karl Jakus and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-06-28 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Shanti Nair is Associate Professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Karl Jakus is Professor at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

Book Elevated Temperature Behavior of Glass and Ceramic Matrix Composites

Download or read book Elevated Temperature Behavior of Glass and Ceramic Matrix Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort can be categorized into three major areas. Section 1 of the report summarizes research on continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. A systematic investigation of the damage development and failure behavior of Nicalon silicon carbide fiber reinforced calcium aluminosilicate composites was first conducted through mechanical testing and microscopy. Then, an analytical effort was made to examine the fracture behavior and thermal shock resistance of continuous fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. Section 2 is on whisker and/or short fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites. The effort included analytical modeling of crack deflection and creep behavior of whisker reinforced composites, characterization of fracture mechanisms in whisker/short fiber ceramic composites at elevated temperatures, and experimental investigation of high temperature creep behavior of the SiC(w)/ A/2O3 composite system. Section 3 is on processing. Two research efforts have been reported. In one, the kinetics of the chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process for fabricating continuous fiber reinforced ceramic composites was modelled for both isothermal and forced CVI conditions. In the other effort, sol-gel processing route was used to develop three-dimensionally reinforced textile (woven and braided) ceramic composites.

Book Toughening Mechanisms in Ceramic Composites

Download or read book Toughening Mechanisms in Ceramic Composites written by E. R. Fuller Jr. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toughening Mechanisms in Ceramic Composites: Semi-Annual Progress Report for the Period Ending September 30, 1988 The achievement of higher efficiency heat engines and heat recovery systems requires the availability of high-temperature, high-performance structural materials. Structural ceramics and, more recently ceramic matrix composites have received particular attention for these applications due to their high strength and excellent resistance to corrosion, erosion and thermal shock. Even with these positive attributes, improved reliabil ity and extended lifetime under service conditions are necessary for strue tural ceramics and ceramic composites to gain wide industrial acceptance. This reliability is only achieved with improved knowledge of in-service damage modes and failure mechanisms, and the processing knowledge to improve this performance by microstructural modifications.' The inherent _problems are mechanical and chemical in nature and are enhanced by the high temperatures, reactive environments, and extreme thermal gradients and thermal cycling, to which these materials are subjected. With an objective of improved performance for heat engine/heat reccy ery applications, the nist program addresses these problems through a de termination and characterization of major toughening mechanisms in ceramic composites, examining both model crack-fiber systems and real composites. A key aspect of the program is a determination of the critical processing factors which influence microstructure and interfacial behavior in these materials, and which thereby influence these toughening mechanisms. The activities of the program are grouped under two major work areas, each designed to develop key data, associated test methods and companion predic tive models. The status of these two work areas are detailed below. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Time Dependent Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Matrix Composites at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Time Dependent Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Matrix Composites at Elevated Temperatures written by Longbiao Li and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the time-dependent behavior of fiber-reinforced ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) at elevated temperatures. The author combines the time-dependent damage mechanisms of interface and fiber oxidation and fracture with the micromechanical approach to establish the relationships between the first matrix cracking stress, matrix multiple cracking evolution, tensile strength, tensile stress-strain curves and tensile fatigue of fiber-reinforced CMCs and time. Then, using damage models of energy balance, the fracture mechanics approach, critical matrix strain energy criterion, Global Load Sharing criterion, and hysteresis loops he determines the first matrix cracking stress, interface debonded length, matrix cracking density, fibers failure probability, tensile strength, tensile stress-strain curves and fatigue hysteresis loops. Lastly, he predicts the time-dependent mechanical behavior of different fiber-reinforced CMCs, i.e., C/SiC and SiC/SiC, using the developed approaches, in order to reduce the failure risk during the operation of aero engines. The book is intended for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in the mechanical behavior of CMCs, researchers investigating the damage evolution of CMCs at elevated temperatures, and designers responsible for hot-section CMC components in aero engines. .

Book Toughening Mechanisms in Quasi Brittle Materials

Download or read book Toughening Mechanisms in Quasi Brittle Materials written by S.P. Shah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A variety of ceramic materials has been recently shown to exhibit nonlinear stress strain behavior. These materials include transformation-toughened zirconia which undergoes a stress-induced crystallographic transformation in the vicinity of a propagating crack, microcracking ceramics, and ceramic-fiber reinforced ceramic matrices. Since many of these materials are under consideration for structural applications, understanding fracture in these quasi-brittle materials is essential. Portland cement concrete is a relatively brittle material. As a result mechanical behavior of concrete, conventionally reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete and fiber reinforced concrete is critically influenced by crack propagation. Crack propagation in concrete is characterized by a fracture process zone, microcracking, and aggregate bridging. Such phenomena give concrete toughening mechanisms, and as a result, the macroscopic response of concrete can be characterized as that of a quasi-brittle material. To design super high performance cement composites, it is essential to understand the complex fracture processes in concrete. A wide range of concern in design involves fracture in rock masses and rock structures. For example, prediction of the extension or initiation of fracture is important in: 1) the design of caverns (such as underground nuclear waste isolation) subjected to earthquake shaking or explosions, 2) the production of geothermal and petroleum energy, and 3) predicting and monitoring earthquakes. Depending upon the grain size and mineralogical composition, rock may also exhibit characteristics of quasi-brittle materials.

Book R curve Behavior of Whisker reinforced Ceramic Composites

Download or read book R curve Behavior of Whisker reinforced Ceramic Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramics have attracted great interest for advanced heat engines and industrial applications as a result of their stiffness, light weight, corrosion resistance, and superior performance at high temperatures. However, their utilization in engineering applications is severely limited by their brittleness. One approach toward substantially reducing this brittleness is by incorporating strong whiskers into the ceramic matrix. Studies of whisker-reinforced ceramic composites have shown both rising fracture resistance with crack extension (i.e. R-curve behavior) and a three- to four-fold increase in steady-state toughness. The primary toughening mechanism is bridging of the crack surface by whiskers. This paper discusses the bridging mechanism in detail and presents R-curves for SiC whisker-reinforced Al2O3 composites.
