Book Touching the Art

Download or read book Touching the Art written by Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2023-11-07 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daringly observant memoir about intergenerational trauma, fine art, and compartmentalization from a returning Soft Skull author and Lambda Literary Award winner A mixture of memoir, biography, criticism, and social history, Touching the Art is queer icon and activist Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore’s interrogation of the possibilities of artistic striving, the limits of the middle-class mindset, the legacy of familial abandonment, and what art can and cannot do. Taking the form of a self-directed research project, Sycamore recounts the legacy of her fraught relationship with her late grandmother, an abstract artist from Baltimore who encouraged Mattilda as a young artist, then disparaged Mattilda’s work as “vulgar” and a “waste of talent” once it became unapologetically queer. As she sorts through her grandmother Gladys’s paintings and handmade paperworks, Sycamore examines the creative impulse itself. In fragments evoking the movements of memory, she searches for Gladys’s place within the trajectories of midcentury modernism and Abstract Expressionism, Jewish assimilation and white flight, intergenerational trauma and class striving. Sycamore writes, “Art is never just art, it is a history of feeling, a gap between sensations, a safety valve, an escape hatch, a sudden shift in the body, a clipboard full of flowers, a welcome mat flipped over and back, over and back, welcome.” Refusing easy answers in search of an embodied truth, Sycamore upends propriety to touch the art and feel everything that comes through.

Download or read book Touching Art written by Maria Emília Fonseca and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focusses on the exhibition of the Tree of Life, a sculpture made in Mozambique of decommissioned, dismantled weapons, created to celebrate peace and commissioned by the British Museum, chosen to be the symbol of the “Africa 2005” season of cultural events and exhibited in its Great Court between February and October 2005. This artwork was first exhibited in Maputo before being dispatched to Britain and it is presently on display at the Sainsbury African Galleries of the British Museum, in London. This dissertation moves along two converging routes: the articulation of the meaning(s) produced within the exhibition and the role of exhibitionary institutions in the creation of social knowledge. A central topic of discussion is the different practices and sites of exhibition of the Tree of Life sculpture in Britain and in Mozambique, in an endeavour to illustrate/establish the differences which determine and/or condition the specific approaches used in the two distinct cultural contexts within which it was exhibited. The discussion evolves towards exploring how a new discourse on the exhibition of contemporary African art questions and challenges both curatorial practices and cultural concepts of collecting, displaying and interpreting art objects and negotiating meaning.

An example of the quality of work which makes up the Artistic Touch series is a review in the American Artistic magazine, where it was stated:American Artist Magazine Book Review of The Artistic TouchRECOMMENDED BOOKS"This lavishly illustrated volume would be worth its price even without the text. It's fun reading because of the variety of works, which are broken up into such categories as abstractions, animals, machines, the sky, travel, and landscapes. There are sixty-five watercolorists represented, including Nita Engle, Judi Betts, Frank Webb, Janet Fish, Pat Deadman, and Jeanne Dobie. Under most of the paintings reproduced here, the artists describe their inspiration for the work and offer various tidbits of technical information."
