Book excerpt: Excerpt from Touching Incidents in the Life and Labors of a Pioneer on the Pacific Coast Since 1853 Rev. Joseph Wilkinson Hines, the subject of this biographical sketch, is at the present writing (1904) the president of the Santa Clara County Society of California Pioneers, a member of the board of trustees of the University of the Pacific and also actively identified with several other local associations designed to promote the various material, social and intellectual interests of the State for whose expansion and up-building he has, in various relations, spent the prime and strength of his manhood. From the time his feet first pressed the soil of California, nearly half a century ago, until now, when his brow wears the silver crown of nearly four score years, his hand has never wearied and his heart has never faltered in honorable and intelligent effort to make his adopted state what it confessedly is at the present time - one of the grandest and most promising commonwealths in the great American Union. Independent but not obtrusive, zealous but not impulsive, possessed of a wonderful versatility, his mental habitudes were well adapted to the varied and pressing demands of a new and rapidly growing community, where ideals for future guidance were to be created, and various uplifting and progressive agencies were to be employed and fitted to the demands and exigencies of a rapidly shifting and varying scene. Book excerpt: Pioneers of the Pacific Coast By Agnes Christina Laut Bering had become very depressed, and so irritable that he could not tolerate approach. If the men of learning had been but wise in the dangers of ocean travel, they would have recognized in their commander the symptoms of the common sea-scourge of the age--scurvy. Presently, he was too ill to leave his bed, and Waxel, who hated all interference and threatened to put the scientists in irons or throw them overboard, took command. By the middle of July passengers and crew were reduced to half allowance of bad water. Still, there were signs that afforded hope. Book excerpt: Excerpt: Like Peter the Great, Vitus Bering had served an apprenticeship with the East India Company. It is more than probable that he first met his royal patron while he was in this service. While other expeditions to explore America had but to cross the sea before beginning their quest, Bering's expedition had to cross the width of Europe, and then the width of Asia, before it could reach even the sea. Between St Petersburg and the Pacific lay six thousand miles of mountain and tundra. Caravans, flat-boats, and dog-trains must be provided to transport supplies; and the vessels to be used at the end of the land journey must be built on the Pacific.
