Book excerpt: touching eternity explores how teachers can make a long-term impact on the lives of their students. Written in an accessible narrative style, this case study of one high school art teacher and his former students invites readers to engage in fundamental and essential issues in teaching as well as in educational research. Rather than drawing conclusions, this book is uniquely designed to raise questions about the consequences of teaching and learning. “An extraordinary accomplishment. I know of no other book like it in the field of education. Its pages reflect Dewey’s observation that one of the greatest of educational fallacies is that the student learns only what he or she is being taught at the time.... This book breaks new ground.” —Elliot W. Eisner, Lee Jacks Professor of Education and Professor of Art, Stanford University “The strength of this masterfully written book lies in its determinate inconclusiveness. It leaves many questions hauntingly unanswered so that they continue to gnaw at the reader long after the book has been put down...Barone skillfully encourages teachers to debate these questions and interrogate these themes. touching eternity is a book that demands our attention.” —Peter McLaren, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, UCLA, and author of Che Guevara, Paulo Freire, and the Pedagogy of Revolution “Now more than ever, we need a book that shows us the subtle but long-term effects of a teacher who tells students, ‘Follow your heart.’” —Susan Ohanian, author of Caught in the Middle: Nonstandard Kids and a Killing Curriculum

Malachi and his friends are just your regular average kids from hell. The suburbs that is, not the fiery pit part. But when Hell’s Bells ring out—signaling that a soul has escaped from one of the eternal circles, Mal and his friends can’t help but take the opportunity for a little adventure. Before they know it, they’ve somehow slipped through the veil and found themselves in the middle of Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night. And what’s even worse, they’ve managed to bring the escaped soul with them! As the essence of one of history’s greatest manipulators gains power by shifting the balance on Earth, Mal and his squad-mates—along with some new friends that they meet along the way—work desperately to trap the escapee, save the people of Earth from the forces of evil, and find the portal back to their own dimension. If they can’t manage it before their parents realize they’re gone, they’ll be grounded for an eternity. And an eternity in hell is a very, very long time.

Can she finally be free?

Book excerpt: ETERNITY LEAVE: A MUST READ FOR ANY PARENT... FOUR CHILDREN. ONE MAN. HOW HARD CAN IT BE?... Dear Chloe, Emma, Ruby, and Ollie, 'I am applying for the position you haven't advertised, has no specific job description and no hope of fiscal reward. I am applying because I have this misguided belief that it will look like it does on the cover photo of 'The Complete Guide to Childcare' where everyone appears relaxed and bright-eyed, not knackered, irascible or covered in snot. Armed with a pristine copy of 'The Complete Guide to Childcare', ambitions to be the next literary giant and live off the grid, what could possibly go wrong? 'Five minutes after Brigit's maternity leave ended I realised the magnitude of my error. I was now the sole carer for two six-month old children who thought the hands smearing yoghurt over their faces belonged to somebody else, and a two-year old who walked for five steps and decided it wasn't for her.' I crashed into a world of mainly strong, resourceful, resilient women, a mountain of nappies to rival Kilimanjaro and a widening gap where my self-esteem used to reside.' I am a man. I soon discovered this was not an excuse...' What the reviews are saying ... 'Refreshing and uplifting. Every parent should read this book.' 'Written with blistering honesty. It will make you laugh, cry, and most of all, appreciate the precious time spent with children.' 'A beautifully crafted story, filled with humour and moments of real poignancy.' 'An inspiring story of highs and lows. The portrayal of the challenges facing a modern family are insightful, enlightening and at times completely comedic- I loved it!'

Book excerpt: How a doctor's glimpses of eternity confirmed everything he believed about God, suffering, life on earth, and what happens after death.Dr. Chauncey Crandall knows his patients well. When they are dying, he sits at the bedside with them and holds their hands. He prays with them. Sometimes he can feel what they feel and see what they see. At other times his patients have near-death experiences and "come back" with astonishing descriptions of the afterlife. In TOUCHING HEAVEN, Dr. Crandall reveals how what he has seen and heard has convinced him that God is real, that we are created for a divine purpose, that death is not the end, that we will see our departed loved ones again, and that we are closer to the next world than we think.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dimension of eternity has been lost from much contemporary religious consciousness. Liberals tend to focus on action within time, as do conservatives, who see history as a battleground for a war of good against evil. Spiritual life, however, also requires nurturing a sense of eternity within time. These sermons from Marsh Chapel at Boston University follow the lectionary in highlighting the places of temporal life within eternity, and the places eternity is found in temporal life. The liturgical year is employed as the venue for articulating a comprehensive theology on the themes of the temporal and eternal aspects of Christian nurture.

Book Milton s Italy

Download or read book Milton s Italy written by Catherine Martin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book joins a growing trend toward transnational literary studies and revives a venerable tradition of Anglo-Italian scholarship centering on John Milton. Correcting misperceptions that have diminished the international dimensions of his life and work, it broadly surveys Milton’s Italianate studies, travels, poetics, politics, and religious convictions. While his debts to Machiavelli and other classical republicans are often noted, few contemporary critics have explored the Italian sources of his anti-papal, anti-episcopal, and anti-formalist religious outlook. Relying on Milton’s own testimony, this book explores its roots in Dante, Petrarch, Ariosto, and that great "Venetian enemy of the pope," Paolo Sarpi, thereby correcting a recent tendency to make native English contexts dominate his development. This tendency is partly due to a mistaken belief that Italy was in steep decline during and after Milton’s travels of 1638-1639, the period immediately before he produced his prose critiques of the English Church, its canon law, and its censorship. Yet these were also fundamentally "Italian" issues that he skillfully adapted to meet contemporary English needs, a practice enabled by his extraordinarily positive experience of the Italian language, cities, academies, and music, the latter of which ultimately influenced Milton’s "operatic" drama, Samson Agonistes. Besides republicanism and theology (radical doctrines of free grace and free will), equally strong influences treated here include Italian Neoplatonism, cosmology, and romance epic. By making these traditions his own, Milton became what John Steadman once described as an "Italianate Englishman" whose classical "literary tastes and critical orientation...were...to a considerable extent" molded by Italian critics (1976), a view that is fully credited and updated here.
