Book Touch my Blood

Download or read book Touch my Blood written by Fred Khumalo and published by Penguin Random House South Africa. This book was released on 2011-12-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a teenager Fred Khumalo greeted his friends with a handshake and the words 'touch my blood'. It implied friendship and trust. The saying became his name. More than that, it became the way he viewed his world. Everything touched Fred Khumalo. Twice he was bewitched. Twice his father - the 'moegoe', the 'country bumpkin' - took him to inyangas to have the 'demons' banished. Twice his mother - the 'city girl' - took him to the doctor to have the 'fevers' cured. When the American Dudes became the fashion, Khumalo dressed up in outlandish style and strutted the streets. 'You had to be brave to be seen in the outfits that we wore. Green, yellow, maroon, powder blue. Outrageous stuff, garish stuff, bright stuff. Earth, Wind and Fire stuff. Michael Jackson (pre-nose job) stuff.' He smoked dagga with con men and criminals, he pickpocketed 'corpses' on Friday night trains. He worked as a gardener in the larney suburbs and drooled over pornographic photographs with his baas's son. He studied journalism and shacked up with whiteys in a commune called Snake Park, for a while the only darkie in a crazy swirl of booze and drugs and sex. And then the bloody fightings that tore apart KwaZulu/Natal in the 1980s touched his life. Sucked him into a place of horror and violence that threatened to destroy him. When a friend died in his arms with the words 'They really got me, Touch My Blood. They really got me,' Khumalo realised that if he was to outlive the madness he had to run. From the journalist and Sunday Times columnist comes a startlingly honest, humorous and poignant autobiography about growing up in a time of laughter and heartache.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • “A must-read...Phoebe Robinson discusses race and feminism in such a funny, real, and specific way, it penetrates your brain and stays with you.”—Ilana Glazer, co-creator and co-star of Broad City A hilarious and timely essay collection about race, gender, and pop culture from comedy superstar and 2 Dope Queens podcaster Phoebe Robinson Being a black woman in America means contending with old prejudices and fresh absurdities every day. Comedian Phoebe Robinson has experienced her fair share over the years: she's been unceremoniously relegated to the role of “the black friend,” as if she is somehow the authority on all things racial; she's been questioned about her love of U2 and Billy Joel (“isn’t that...white people music?”); she's been called “uppity” for having an opinion in the workplace; she's been followed around stores by security guards; and yes, people do ask her whether they can touch her hair all. the. time. Now, she's ready to take these topics to the page—and she’s going to make you laugh as she’s doing it. Using her trademark wit alongside pop-culture references galore, Robinson explores everything from why Lisa Bonet is “Queen. Bae. Jesus,” to breaking down the terrible nature of casting calls, to giving her less-than-traditional advice to the future female president, and demanding that the NFL clean up its act, all told in the same conversational voice that launched her podcast, 2 Dope Queens, to the top spot on iTunes. As personal as it is political, You Can't Touch My Hair examines our cultural climate and skewers our biases with humor and heart, announcing Robinson as a writer on the rise. One of Glamour's “Top 10 Books of 2016”

Book excerpt: A few premonitory dreams put our hero on a course of events that bend his mind in unpleasant ways. From saving his friends, and saving the god of a long extinct religious cult, to saving the entire planet and its population, our hero struggles to save everybody and everything but himself, and then he discovers he needs to save himself the most. Secrets are the foundation of our hero's life and they are the most benefic thing for him, but fighting to reveal them all puts our hero on a path of self-hatred, self-destruction, and self-endarkenment. And nothing goes well for our hero until he decides that he needs to defeat the monster inside himself above anything else. Quote: "Light doesn't kill shadows, doesn't make them disappear, it just blinds you. Shadows are always there, always will be, they are cast by things, that sometimes cannot be disposed of. Ignoring or trying to forget never solved the problem. The problem you have when you always look at every shadow with a panic alertness expecting the monster to come out of it at any moment. Learn to live with shadows around you, with darkness in you. It's not always bad." Sometimes you do not need to defeat, you can also assimilate in order to adapt and grow.

Download or read book Learning Stories written by Margaret Carr and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012-03-19 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Margaret Carr′s seminal work on Learning Stories was first published by SAGE in 2001, and this widely acclaimed approach to assessment has since gained a huge international following. In this new full-colour book, the authors outline the philosophy behind Learning Stories and refer to the latest findings from the research projects they have led with teachers on learning dispositions and learning power, to argue that Learning Stories can construct learner identities in early childhood settings and schools. By making the connection between sociocultural approaches to pedagogy and assessment, and narrative inquiry, this book contextualizes Learning Stories as a philosophical approach to education, learning and pedagogy. Chapters explore how Learning Stories: - help make connections with families - support the inclusion of children and family voices - tell us stories about babies - allow children to dictate their own stories - can be used to revisit children′s learning journeys - can contribute to teaching and learning wisdom This ground-breaking book expands on the concept of Learning Stories and includes examples from practice in both New Zealand and the UK. It outlines the philosophy behind this pedagogical tool for documenting how learning identities are constructed and shows, through research evidence, why the early years is such a critical time in the formation of learning dispositions. Margaret Carr is a Professor of Education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Wendy Lee is Director of the Educational Leadership Project, New Zealand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Meredith Gentry, P.I. and Princess Merry, heir to the throne of Fairie. Now there are those among me who whisper I am more. They fear me even as they protect me. And who can blame them? I’ve awakened the dazzling magic that’s slumbered in them for thousands of years. But the thing is, I can’t figure out why. My aunt, the Queen of Air and Darkness, is no longer distracted by her usual sadistic hobbies. Her obsession has turned unwaveringly to me. The mission to get me pregnant and beat my cousin Prince Cel to the crown is taking longer than expected. Even though I spend each night with the Queen’s Ravens, my immortal guards, no child has come of our decadent pleasures. But something else is happening. My magic courses through me uncontrollably. And as I lock my half-mortal body with their full-Sidhe blooded ones, the power surges like never before. It all began with the chalice. I dreamed of it, and it appeared, cool and hard, beside me when I awoke. My guards know the ancient relic well—its disappearance ages ago stripped them of their vital powers. But it is here with us now. My touch resonates with its force, and they’re consumed with it, their Sidhe essences lit up by it. But even as they cherish me for this unexpected gift, there are those who loathe me for it. Me, a mongrel, only half fey and part mortal. The Unseelie court has suffered for so long, and there are some who would not have it weakened further by an impure queen. My enemies grow in number every day. But they do not know what I am capable of. Nor, for that matter, do I. . . . In Seduced by Moonlight, Laurell K. Hamilton brings the dark, erotic reign of the immortal fey to a startling new depth. Full of sensuality and the consuming anticipation of latent powers unleashed, this world of gods, shapeshifters, and immortal souls is unveiled in all of its supreme magnificence and its treacherous deceits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One evening, while studying her Bible, the Holy Spirit took author Linda Evans in the Spirit to the edge of a vast field of wheat. It was night, yet a bright light shone on the field lighting every blade of golden bearded wheat. The wheat made a soft rustling sound as it swayed in the breeze. It looked like soft, golden, rolling waves of the sea. As Linda watched, her heart pounding, a fine mist resembling a black fog came rolling in and hovered over the field in mid air like a blanket. The fog was thick and hovered about a foot over the top of the field. In the distance, sitting in the middle of the field, was a storage shack, aged and nearly falling down. Suddenly, out of the darkness of the left of heaven came a huge flash of light, accompanied by the terrifying sound of crackling lightening so loud it sounded like an electrical stage production backed up with the roar of thunder. The lightening struck the shack, and the shack began to burn. As the flames roared and crackled, Linda was speechless. She didn't know where she was and didn't know what was happening. Then something in the right of the heavens caught her attention ...

The New Orleans High School for the Visual and Performing Arts even has a football team...perfunctory though it may be. Come along for a (broomstick) ride and see what’s brewing at the NOLA. High school sophomore Winnie Deatherage has one driving goal—to win the lead in her school play. In preparation for auditions, she takes her first steps into the world of magic, embracing the voodoo traditions of her New Orleans hometown and channeling the dormant part of her that seems to find spells and magic natural, even familiar. With the support of her loyal, tongue-in-cheek crew of best friends, Winnie lets her newfound magical prowess guide her to conquer the mean girls, pursue her crush, and, of course, gain her fame on her high school stage. Soon enough, Winnie is a natural at magic, and has even drawn another magical presence into her world—the director’s mysterious assistant Devlin, who not only seems to be watching her with more attention than he gives the other students, but also seems to have access to her inner thoughts. High school is a complicated time for any teenager—Winnie thought magic would make it easier, but things only seem to get stranger with each spell she casts.
