Troops of care-free children were chattering noisily as thev went on their way, 'round the corner and on to the red school-house. And then there came groups of bright-eyed lads and lassies, laughing yesterdays away. Moved by the sentiment of the day, I followed them, down the hill to the old well, and along the verdant sward where the sparkling water overflowing, has divided the grass with innumerable hurrying rivulets. Here modest violets interlaced their slender stems with the grass-blades. Along the well-sodded playground, still moist with morning dew where the giant oaks cast their shade, and by the cool, clear river. We wandered, unconscious of fleeting moments until the oft-heard bell summoned the'stragglers up the steep hill and into the brick school-house to studies. McLennan first pointed out the importance of Totemism for the early history of society, various writers have treated of the subject and added to his materials, but no one, I believe, has tried to collect and classify all the main facts, so far as they are at present known. Accordingly, when the Editors of the new edition of the Encylop dia Britannica did me the honour of asking me to write the article Totemism, I had to do the work of collection and classification for myself, with very little help from my predecessors. The materials grew under my hand till it became clear that only a selection of them could be given within the limits of an Encylop dia article. I venture, however, to put forth my full collection of facts bearing on savage Totemism, in the hope that it may help to lighten the labours of those who are working in the same field. On the question of the traces of Totemism among the civilised races of antiquity, I have collected a certain amount of evidence, but it is still too fragmentary for publication. I hope at a future time to examine the evidence fully. I regret that Mr Andrew Lang's Myth, Ritual, and Religion did not reach me till after my little work was passed for the press.
