Download or read book Production of Whole tree Chips for Energy written by Christian Gamborg and published by Scientific and Techn. This book was released on 1998 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents findings of a review study in Denmark of silvicultural systems that may increase the production of wood for energy from conventional forestry. Assesses the effect of selected silvicultural factors, such as tree species, thinning program, and especially plant density and the use of nurse trees, on wood chip production from whole trees. Current practice and options used to optimize chip production are described for stands of Norway spruce, with and without nurse trees (larch); and for planted beech, with nurse trees or using natural regeneration.
Download or read book Should Whole tree Chips for Fuel be Dried Before Storage written by E. L. Springer and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whole-tree chips deteriorate more rapidly than do clean, debarked chips and present a greater hazard for spontaneous ignition when stored in outdoor piles. To prevent ignition, the chips can be stored for only short periods of time and the frequent rotation of the storage piles results in high handling costs. Drying the chips prior to storage will prevent deterioration and heating, provided the chips are stored under cover. In many cases, the costs of drying can be recovered when the chips are burned for fuel. In these instances, drying and covered storage is the least expensive method for maintaining an inventory of whole-tree chips to be used as fuel.

Book excerpt: The wood-fired boiler at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury, Vermont was investigated in order to identify environmental and economic problems associated with increased use of wood as fuel. The investigators observed that the low amount of stack emissions contained particulates that were extremely effective light scatterers. An analysis of the entire system was performed in order to investigate the particulate growth and the conversion of gaseous material to particulates within the system. Initial findings indicate that a good deal of particulate formation takes place within and after the cyclone, thus rendering the cyclone somewhat ineffective in this system. Meteorological data were acquired in the vicinity of the experimental site. Background concentrations were measured using hi-vol samplers and a Tracer experiment was performed to indicate the direction of plume travel. These data were incorporated into the Los Alamos Visibility Model to simulate the actual appearance of the plume with a variety of boiler sizes. This simulation gives one an indication of how large a boiler, sited in this location, can be before the opacity of the plume becomes aesthetically offensive. An economic assessment of the wood burning activities at Waterbury and a number of other sites is included in this report.
